World's first private manned space
flight

World's first private manned space
flight
06/19/2004 04:53 PM

I am quite excited about Mondays flight that if it succeeds will result in a significant event in manned spaceflight. The first ever successful private launch into space. I am sure their will be Television coverage of the launch and being I am laid up in bed recovering I will definitely be tuned in.

My dad who does not follow these types of things closely was even aware of the launch and he posed a question to my Mom if she would pay to go. Her answer was no but the speculated correctly that I would jump at the chance. I am hoping that in my lifetime it will be affordable to view the earth from space. This frontier has been limited to the chosen ones and to think we are on the doorstep of opening manned spaceflight to regular Joe's and Janes.

Some of you have read Science Fiction books where people travel to other solar systems spending a lifetime doing so forever leaving the bounds of earth. I wonder in my mind how far we are away from doing this. I am sure someday someone will be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice for the chance of a one way trip to the outer reaches of the solar system. Obviously we have a long way to go in that propulsion systems that have yet to be invented would be needed to push a spacecraft to the velocities needed to achieve such a thing. Pushing ones imagination you would have to raise children in space to continue the mission as the original crew would never make it in a lifetime. Probably to far fetched to consider but if the human race makes it another 1000 years imagine the possibilities. [w ww.scaled.com]

SpaceShipOne Makes It To Space

SpaceShipOne Makes It To Space 06/21/2004 01:51 PM
We wanted to avoid all the hype surrounding the launch of SpaceShipOne until there was some actual news about it, rather than hundreds of stories about how it would probably be touching space today. The news has come back, however, that SpaceShipOne has successfully broken the space barrier with the first ever "private-sector astronaut." While this won't qualify for the X-Prize (there need to be 3 people on board), it certainly does suggest it won't be long before the SpaceShipOne team can really go for it. As the article makes abundantly clear, this represents quite a step forward in the concept of private space travel. The real issue, though, is how far private space travel will get before there's a major accident (which unfortunately will happen) -- and how that will impact the overall industry.

“SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back. The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control. It was carried to 50,000ft (15km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.” The BBC’s servers are being hit hard at the moment - if you can’t get the story, try again later.

First Manned Private Spaceflight 06/23/2004 06:23 AM

Hurrah!  Privately funded by Paul Allen, designed by Burt Rutan, and piloted by Mike Melvill, a 62 year-old test pilot who is now an astronaut, SpaceShipOne successfully reached space and returned safely this morning, the very first manned private spaceflight in history.  Awesome.  With all the doom and gloom these days, it's nice to have something to smile about.

Death on Mission: Space

Death on Mission: Space 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Boy , 4, dies after riding Epcot attraction: This ride is apparently pretty intense. From the CNN article:

In 2003, Disney began placing motion sickness bags in the ride. During an eight-month period in 2003-04, six people over age 55 were taken to the hospital for chest pain and nausea after riding it, though none of them was found to have any serious injuries.

It was the most hospital visits for a single ride since Florida's major theme parks agreed in 2001 to report such problems to the state.

Has anyone ridden it? Is it all that?
