"From March 3—June 17, 2005, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents Sue de Beer: Black Sun. Black Sun, a new two-channel video installation viewed within a large-scale wooden house environment, furthers de Beer’s exploration of the construction of feminine desire and unfulfilled longing." + "Sue de Beer’s art is a mature reflection on the complex interior lives of disaffected suburban American teenagers. Her video installations, photographs, and sculptures are littered with references to the pop culture detritus central to our adolescent search for identity." + "By using the computer and constructing sets to contain the action, de Beer’s enigmatic images make any fiction appear as reality."

Some of the little things about visiting Japan amuse me the most. As an example, while browsing a store on Sunday we came across Diet Beer: And the fact that Budwiser is an import in Japan, and therefore more desirable by some, takes a bit of getting used to as well. All in all, I had a good trip. I'll surely have more to say about it in the next few days....

The Beer Pool

The Beer Pool 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

3062391-Bierschwimmbad__2,p.jpgMore news from the Tirols—the Beer Pool! In a story entitled "Das erste Bier-Schwimmbad der Welt," which we assume translates to "Please Don't Pee In Our Beer Pool," it appears that the city of Tarrenz now has a pool filled with sweet, sweet liquid bread. But don't try drinking from the beer pool directly—according to this Babelfished translation, you don't swim in a cool, crisp lager but in filtered, yeasty wort. Yum! (Thanks, Dennis)

Everyone [We're assuming this means every tank - Ed] is filled with approximately 20,000 litres barley juice. However the beer does not flow by any means freshtapped from the cock. The original fermenting tanks made of high-grade steel are filled with the so-called Biergelaeger, the remainder yeast, which sets off when brewing in the beer tank.

Beer Circles

Beer Circles 09/26/2004 05:36 AM

Drinking on the rails.

« If only all the Helsinki city trams featured a bar, curtains, a loo and inlaid wooden benches like Spårakoff. »

Every big city has some attraction that the locals eschew as a tourist trap and, if I had to think of one for Helsinki, Spårakoff would likely be it. Boston has the duck tours but Spårakoff doesn't feature an annoyingly perky tour guide spewing useless trivia about Helsinki that you won't remember as you whiz by at 50mph while wishing that you had a beer. No, Spårakoff rolls quietly around the city in a loop [~160kb map] while you look out the window and enjoy a beer or two along with the scenery. The tram only runs from May through August which seems wrong since the times you'd want to ride on a cozy tram drinking beer would likely be more during the cold and dark months rather than the warm and sunny months, but unsurprisingly tourists don't flock to Helsinki during the dark times. There's very little mention of the tram on the net in English and so I suppose that it's something the natives want to ride on but only do when they have a visitor to take along as an excuse for being such a tourist. :)

I had always wanted to take a ride on it since first seeing the red tram, but it's not really something you make time for when you live here, ride the regular trams, have seen the sights and don't feel like parting with 7€ for admission and 5€ for a beer just for a 40-60 minute ride around town. A short ferry ride to Tallinn, a few cases of Koff, and back costs only a few euros more. It's a beautiful old tram appointed with a bar, polished wood seats, carpet and velvet curtains which gives the air of being both modern and vintage at the same time. The tables even have built-in cup holders to keep spillage down to a minimum. The tram was originally built in 1959 for Helsinki City Transport, who still operate the tram, and it has been a pub tram serving Koff beer and cider since 1995. The brochure mentions that it has a capacity for 24 people sitting, 6 people standing and, 1 seat in the WC. :) Koff still delivers kegs of beer to local pubs via a wagon pulled by draft horses driven by 2 gentlemen, too, so I think they have a penchant for nostalgia.

Helsinki Beer Festival

An evening of beer, more beer, talking with friends and pictures at the Helsinki Beer Festival.

We went to the Helsinki Beer Festival and it seemed a lot more subdued this year as compared to last year. There didn't seem to be a band and you could actually move around the hall without feeling squished. The selection of beer was also much smaller this year and all of the good Belgian beers had run out by Saturday evening, too. I suppose the trick of getting the good beers is to go on the first evening. The beer expert Michael Jackson was reportedly at the festival this year as well, but noone seems to have seen him or known his whereabouts. It's a big hall, but not quite so big as to not bump into someone like that all evening.

The Russian beer Baltika was something new and was reasonably tasty. Sahti was a nice treat as well. The Estonian beers from last year weren't there this time around much to my dismay as they were memorably good. I managed to avoid the Lapin Kulta and Koff booths on the principle that had I wanted either of them, I could have saved myself 7 euro for the cover charge and bought a 6-pack of them for less money at the corner grocery. A group of us expats congregated, drank and talked for much of the evening and, when we had exhausted all the good beer choices, headed into the center for drunken disco to entertain the more sober people at Baarikärpänen. The highlight of the evening was getting to see Arabella's tattoo of the international power switch icon which caused an instantaneous "more geekier than thou" reverence from us all. She could go to any of the programmer cons and be enshrined. It would be even more amazing if tattoo inks were luminescent. :)

Oktoberfest Beer Foamer

Oktoberfest Beer Foamer 09/20/2004 07:06 AM

beer_foamer.jpg imageI think we can all agree that if you've lost the foam on your mug of beer, you're either drinking something with a lousy head or you've waited far to long to drink it. Either of those problems can be fixed without gadgetitanica ebriositas, of course, but if you want to throw a little technology at the problem, this year's official Oktoberfest website has a new "Beer foamer" that can restore the foam to a beer that's lost its head. The problem is, of course, that it appears to just stir the beer, releasing the carbonation that would otherwise cause a good beer to sparkle on the tongue, meaning you'll have a nice, new head on a flat beer. If this had a tiny nitrogen cartridge that actually re-invigorated the beer then we'd talk business.

getting stuck in salami and beer

getting stuck in salami and beer 12/19/2004 03:48 PM

I watched My Coolest Years: The Geeks with Anne and the kids last night. I thought the show was fantastic, and I was honored to be in such great company. Open note to The Cool Guy who tormented Jessi Klein or the girls from The Donnas: Dude, wherever you are, you are a loser.

Biggest surprise of the show: John Tesh is hellafunny! I remember that he played a Klingon for a day on Next Generation in the episode "The Icarus Factor." Well, "played a Klingon" is probably a little too much . . . he was sort of a featured extra in a line of about twenty guys who wore Klingon makeup and costumes, and snarled while they zapped Worf with painsticks. (Back then, a metric ton of celebrities wanted to be on the show, and they usually ended up wearing crazy alien make-up. Mick Fleetwood was this weird fish-looking thing, for example.)

I remember that he was really friendly, and seemed to be getting a HUGE kick out of the whole thing, but I don't remember him being as funny as he was on My Coolest Years last night.

Best moment of the show: When I saw that they titled me "Wil Wheaton: Author of Just A Geek" (which reminds me: Just A Geek has been recommended by Quint, from Ain't It Cool News! I am in incredibly good company over there, too. Thanks, Quint!) instead of That Other Thing.

That's a big deal to me, you know. Though I personally feel that I'm finally emerging from the shadow of America's Favorite Acting Ensign And Starfleet Academy Classmate Killing Cadet, I wonder if I'll ever do that in the eyes of the entertainment industry. This morning's Dork Tower gives a funny-because-it's-true view of how that effort is playing out in fandom.

. . . and in casting too, now that I really think about it . . . but that's okay. The Path I'm currently wandering is a good one.

Absolute coolest moment in the show: They put up a picture of me with my überhot wife as part of the "Geeks Ultimately Win, So Bite It, You Cool Kids" portion of the show. Ryan just about died when he saw Anne, in the coolest "I'm fifteen and I'm so proud of my mom" way. (Apparently, the kids on his baseball team tried to torment him by singing "Ryan's mom has got it goin' on" to the tune of "Stacey's Mom," and he silenced them by replying, "Yeah. My mom's hot. So what?" Sweet.)

Tonight, VH1 gives us My Coolest Years: The Dirty Hippies, which should be hilarious. It looks like My Coolest Years could end up being as great as I Love The 80s, or maybe even better. Go Generation X! Rock! Yeah! \m/

If anyone from VH1 reads this: I had a blast, you guys. Thanks for making me look cool. I'd love to work with you some more.

No 'dead babies' in my beer? Oh my...

No 'dead babies' in my beer? Oh my... 04/14/2005 01:59 PM
In a surprise move, Anh euser-Busch has gone up against some of the biotech firms that would like to grow genetically-modified (GM) rice containing human DNA. The biotech firm that grows it says that their rice contains synthetic human genes which the company hopes to harvest and refine for use in medicines to fight diarrhea and dehydration.

Anheuser-Busch's concerns are not with the science of biotech, but rather the risk of crop-contamination, as has happened with farmers not only in the U.S. and Ca nada, but all over the world. The USDA has issued rice-tweakers Ventria Bioscience and 300 other biopharmers permission to plant various augmented plants around the country since 1995, but Anheuser-Busch is the first large corporation to threaten a boycott - unusual, because poultry and beef stock (PDF) are fed this kind of thing every day, and have been for the past 20 years. I guess the Budweiser brewers just don't want to see 'dead people' in their suds...

On the flip-side of this occurrence, the response of the anti-stem cell activists has been nothing short of sensory-deprivation. Shouldn't six-packs, cornfields and Porky be given the same human rights as the unborn?

Beer behemoth Miller Brewing Co. is suing an L.A.-based clothes manufacturer for copyright infringement and brand dilution. The problem? Parodical T-shirts that riff off the Miller slogan, bearing messages like "It's Mullet Time" and "Mullet Low-life." The shirts are available at stores including The Buckle and Nordstrom (where you can buy by them online, for now). Link< /a> to news story. (Thanks, Kyle)

Update: BoingBoing reader in South Africa Gerrie Swart says, "Miller is owned by South African Breweries Limited (SAB). The interesting thing being that SAB recently won a court case against a small company making satirical t-shirts in South Africa (this company is called Laugh It Off promotions). It might be that SABMiller will be using the same shitty tactics in other countries? Some links on this: SAB buys Miller (Link 1 Link 2), SAB wins case against T-shirt company (Link), Laugh it Off wins this round (Link), SABMiller wins first round against Laugh it off Promotions (Link)."
