Work!

"...day after day he just stares and stares at the computer monitor doing nothing except typing in a few keystrokes every 10 minutes or so just so I think he is working...Can anyone recommend some motivation techniques to inspire him to work hard like he used to?"

Ken Brown's Motivation, Release 1.2

Ken Brown's Motivation, Release 1.2 05/21/2004 05:24 PM
On 20 May 2004, I posted a statement refuting the claim of Ken Brown, President of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, that Linus Torvalds didn't write Linux. My statement was mentioned on Slashdot, Groklaw, and many other Internet news sites. This attention resulted in over 150,000 requests to our server in less than a day, which is still standing despite yesterday being a national holiday with no one there to stand next to it saying "You can do it. You can do it." Kudos to Sun Microsystems and the folks who built Apache. My statement was mirrored all over the Internet, so the number of true hits to it is probably a substantial multiple of that. There were also quite a few comments at Slashdot, Groklaw, and other sites, many of them about me. I had never engaged in remote multishrink psychoanalysis on this scale before, so it was a fascinating experience.

Tonight's State of the Union address by the president focused in part on Social Security. Many are asking why the sudden interest in a system that seems to be working just fine. Isn't the president taking big political risks for nothing by doing this? In fact there are serious problems that are compelling the administration to take immediate action on Social Security funding.

Whenever we hear about established industries whining about how much money they're losing from alternative forms of media consumption, we just shake our heads. If you do too, then brace your neck before reading on. A new study by Accenture says that TV networks will "lose" $27 billion in the coming five years because of ad skipping by DVR users. Not being able to read the full story on AdAge, we can only assume that Accenture thinks advertisers will pull back from the networks to the tune of $5-plus billion per year, simply because DVR watchers can skip ads. Not likely. The connection is highly dubious and the figures are entirely far-fetched. Yet even more troubling is the age-old "lost money" methodology. Each ad skip does not proportionally diminish the network's coffers -- no money is being subtracted from their bottom line. Rather, any "losses" from ad skipping would come from the network's inability to adapt to new trends and attract those dollars elsewise. The networks are losing money to ad-skipping no more than record companies are losing money to downloads. The quicker they see these as lost opportunities, instead of lost dollars, the better for them.

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PM
One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

So You Want to Be a Programmer?

So You Want to Be a Programmer? 06/29/2004 09:11 AM
It's going to be a big week for Microsoft's developer division. Not only is the team ready to roll out Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1, but it's also unveiling a whole new line of entry-level "Express" programming languages and tools for "weekend warrior" programmers.

How to be a Programmer

How to be a Programmer 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
I'd usually just put this in the notes section, but I liked what I read so much that it deserves a mention here, "How to be a Programmer (local copy), A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary." To be a good programmer is difficult and noble. The hardest part of making real a collective vision of a software project is dealing with one's coworkers and customers. Writing computer programs is important and takes great intelligence and skill. But it is really...

Are You A HyperCard Programmer?

Are You A HyperCard Programmer? 07/29/2004 08:41 PM
Dan Bricklin: When it comes to traditional press writing about blogging, I'm reminded of programmers reacting to developments like the spreadsheet when VisiCalc came out. Sure the "programs" people wrote with it, and the "databases" they kept as lists, were not up to the standards of "real" programmers. But "every-person programming and databasing" has proved a boon to society and has not really threatened the profession of "programmer". It has, though, changed the role of programmer by allowing many of the detailed, area-of-expertise-centric applications to be done quickly, effectively, and inexpensively.
Can someone try and see if this argument can be extended to the hot issue of outsourcing?

The final morning of the Writing Better Code summit, Bruce Eckel announced he was "hijacking" the meeting. Bruce wanted each person at the table to share his or her interview techniques. He wanted to know how we recognize a good programmer in an interview. In this article, I highlight some interview techniques discussed that morning. -- Bill Venners
