Debian: Where should
we
we should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PM
Debian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential, Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.

NASA Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment state, there's not much he can do about it. Is this story a valid means of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

Iraqi first strike before the American

03/15/2003 04:09 AM
ABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally, where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....

BBC News Online examines the background to the conflict in Chechnya.

Chechen POWs maltreated.

Chechen POWs maltreated. 05/29/2004 01:48 AM
This movie makes Abu Ghraib look like a Christian summer camp. It depicts naked POW's transferred between camps. Many of them apparently suffocated during the transport, all hold marks of heavy beating and torture, one has an open fracture of an arm. All of this was filmed by a Russian guard back in 2000. The prisoners are fighters who, once promised amnesty, surrendered after the battle of Komsomolskoje in Chechnya. None of them is believed to be alive today. Three (out of 76 prisoners) managed to escape. Out of those three, two hung themselves, and the remaining one had disappeared.
