Sneaking this in towards the end of the day, Apple and Motorola have announced plans for Apple to put a "slimmed down" version of iTunes on a Motorola phone that will be sold next year. It's not quite an iPhone, as it will really just be like similar MP3 playing phones, with fairly limited storage. In fact, some may wonder why Apple would even bother, since the whole point of iTunes is to sell more iPods. You could make the argument that having iTunes on a mobile phone might make someone more willing to buy an iPod also, but it's a stretch. A more intriguing conspiracy theory would be that this is simply "step 1" in a relationship between Motorola and Apple to build wireless iPods, where they roll this offering out to test the partnership, and then work on a wireless iPod secretly in the background.

NTT DoCoMo will begin selling a mobile phone combining Wi-Fi and 3G (third-generation) functions on July 1, according to the phone's manufacturer, Motorola Inc.

Outwardly, the phone resembles another Motorola 3G phone, the A1000, and like its sibling can connect to WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) 3G networks and older, slower GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) networks. However, the M1000 can also connect to wireless LANs based on the Wi-Fi or IEEE 802.11b standard.

Like the A1000, the M1000 has a touch-sensitive, 2.9-inch TFT LCD (thin-film transistor liquid crystal display) with a resolution of 208 pixels by 320 pixels in up to 65,536 colors, a 1.2 megapixel still camera and a 300,000 pixel video camera, according to details supplied by a Motorola spokeswoman.

The M1000's battery contains enough energy for 80 minutes of videoconferencing over a 3G network, 280 minutes just talking over a GSM connection, or 200 hours on standby, according to Motorola figures.

In addition to its Wi-Fi connection, the phone can also hook up to computers over Bluetooth 1.1 short-range radio or a USB 2.0 (Universal Serial Bus) cable.

The phone runs the Symbian operating system, and contains the Opera 7.5 browser; an e-mail client compatible with POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP servers; the movianVPN 4.0 IPsec VPN (virtual private network) client; and document viewers for e-mail attachments in formats including PDF, JPEG, PNG, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint or Zip. It can also run Java applets compatible with the MIDP 2.0 (Mobile Information Device Profile) specification.

The phone will ship with a 32MB memory card in the tiny TransFlash format, launched by Motorola and Sandisk last year.

Although the M1000 will work anywhere with a GSM or a GPRS network, it will initially only be sold in Japan and there are no plans yet to launch the device elsewhere, according to Motorola spokeswoman Naomi Kondo.

"Japan is where consumers expect high-end handsets," she said.

The handset's price will be set by NTT DoCoMo, she said.

TheFeature.com discusses how DoCoMo's 3G/WLAN phone protects cell voice business model: Carlo Longino writes that DoCoMo's N900iL handset works on 3G cell networks and office Wi-Fi networks, but that the company has somehow disabled it from working in hotspots. Is it disabled, or can it just not handle the authentication? Gateway pages aren't good for handheld devices, especially cell phones, but this is a great opportunity for 802.1X to enter the scene and handle the authentication. NTT DoCoMo has released the NEC 900iG, a dual-mode FOMA W-CDMA 3G and standard GSM phone. Not means not only will the phone be able to take advantage of all the high-speed infrastructure in Japan, but will be able to roam throughout the rest of the world with relative compatibility. Engadget said it might be heading stateside, which would be just fine—its 1.2-megapixel camera would be welcome, at the very least—but it seems like an odd choice, expect for those that do a lot of roaming back into W-CDMA markets. Maybe Cingular (or whoever deploys W-CDMA first here next year) will pick it up. For now, it's released for our Japanese friends.
