Libraries Still Turning Down Federal
Funds Over Filter Issue
06/11/2004 12:55 PMA year after the Supreme Court said the federal government could
require
public libraries to use filters on their computers if they wanted
to receive federal funds, libraries are still debating what to do.
While many libraries immediately decided to forego any federal
funding, others spent some time debating it. Up in Oregon, a library
has decided that
their philosophy on library access to information is more
important than some federal dollars and won't block all of their
computers. Instead, because they're smart enough to understand this
isn't a fully black-and-white issue, they're putting filters on some
machines, and giving users the choice.

manly men (USATODAY.com)
09/22/2004 06:33 AMUSATODAY.com - Political analysts say they've never seen anything
quite like the tough-guy competition between President Bush and
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry. They point to two reasons: millions of
hunters and fishermen live in the battleground states each candidate
needs to win, and voters everywhere are haunted by 9/11.

Job Numbers in an Election Year
Job Numbers in an Election Year
08/10/2004 12:47 PMI'll grant that often you can say anything you want with statistics,
but in
these
letters to the NY Times editor (in response to
this
article), one statistic really stood out:
For the last 54 years, spanning 14 presidential terms and
11 different presidents, six of the top seven job-growth terms were
presided over by Democrats, while Republican presidents were in office
for all seven of the lowest job-growth terms.
Is there a lesson to be learned from this for the working men and
women of America?

Wartime (and Election Year) Polemics
Wartime (and Election Year) Polemics
05/23/2004 12:03 PMFrank Rich (NY Times): Michael Moore's Candid Camera. Of
course, Mr. Moore is being selective in what he chooses to include in
his movie; he's a polemicist, not a journalist. But he implicitly
raises the issue that much of what we've seen elsewhere during this
war, often under the label of "news," has been just as subjectively
edited. Perhaps the most damning sequence in "Fahrenheit 9/11" is the
one showing American troops as they ridicule hooded detainees in a
holding pen near Samara, Iraq, in December 2003. A male soldier
touches the erection of a prisoner lying on a stretcher underneath a
blanket, an intimation of the sexual humiliations that were happening
at Abu Ghraib at that same time. Besides adding further corroboration
to Seymour Hersh's report that the top command has sanctioned a
culture of abuse not confined to a single prison or a single company
or seven guards, this video raises another question: why didn't we see
any of this on American TV before "60 Minutes II"?

Gay marriage compared to box-turtle
marriage in Senate, Daily Show replies
07/19/2004 02:52 AM
In a fit of astonishing lunacy, Texas Senator John Cornyn tried to
explain the need to ban gay marriage in the context of the social harm
that would accrue from allowing men to marry box turtles ("It does not
affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box
turtle, but that does not mean it is right...Now you must raise you
children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on
the same legal footing as man and wife"). Jon Stewart's Daily Show
segment on this statement is nothing short of brilliant. Let's hope it
gets enough airplay to cost Cornyn the election (and possibly get him
institutionalized somewhere...).
