Aspyr to launch Space Colony on June 14
06/02/2004 03:20 PMAspyr Media Inc. announced Wednesday that its Macintosh conversion of
Space Colony
has gone gold master, the final step before the game goes into
production. The company expects the game to ship on June 14th, with
copies hitting store shelves by the 18th. Space Colony is a simulation
game that also includes some real time strategy elements: Not only
must you manage the interpersonal relationships of the people on board
your space colony, but you've got to properly manage and develop
resources too. "Imagine The Sims are sent to space, but they're
dysfunctional," is how Aspyr describes Space Colony.

Viesturs’ Historic Mountaineering
Attempt
04/18/2005 11:14 AMThis May, renowned mountain climber Ed Viesturs will make what is
likely his final attempt at mountaineering history when he sets off
for the summit of Mount Annapurna in Nepal. If successful, Viesturs
will be the first American to summit all 14 8,000-meter peaks in the
world without the use of oxygen -- an incredible feat that has taken
him nearly 20 years. MSN® Travel will be right there, allowing
viewers to experience this bit of American mountaineering history as
it unfolds.

Scaled Composites Plans First Private
Space Shot
06/02/2004 01:36 PMScaled Composites, the X-Prize competitor funded by Microsoft mogul
Paul Allen, and led by aviation uber-genius Burt Rutan, has scheduled a test flight that, if successful, will be the first
space launch in history by the private sector.
SpaceShipOne will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles)
into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test
Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful,
it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private
enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable
space access for future generations.
This flight won't qualify for the X-Prize since the prize
stipulates that you have to take 3 people to space, instead of just
one. It is likely, however, a preliminary flight to get ready for a
shot at the prize, and the precursor to commercial space travel. One
of the reasons that the Mojave Airport is on its way to being licensed
by the FTC as the world's first commercial spaceport. We have
spaceports now! My jet-pack and flying car must not be far
behind!

SpaceShipOne Makes It To Space
06/21/2004 01:51 PMWe wanted to avoid all the hype surrounding the launch of SpaceShipOne
until there was some actual news about it, rather than hundreds of
stories about how it would probably be touching space today. The news
has come back, however, that
SpaceShipOne has
successfully broken the space barrier with the first ever
"private-sector astronaut." While this won't qualify for the X-Prize
(there need to be 3 people on board), it certainly does suggest it
won't be long before the SpaceShipOne team can really go for it. As
the article makes abundantly clear, this represents quite a step
forward in the concept of private space travel. The real issue,
though, is how far private space travel will get before there's a
major accident (which unfortunately
will happen) -- and how
that will impact the overall industry.
