How do I read the message headers in Gmail?03/14/2005 05:25 PM Dave, I’ve really been enjoying learning more about
Google’s Gmail system, and have found your Q&A articles
invaluable assistance (especially the one about forwarding messages
and the one about Gmail phishing notifications) but I’m still a
bit puzzled about one thing: how do I see the headers to messages I
receive?…

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail05/26/2004 01:35 PM Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.
DOWN FOR THE COUNT
DOWN FOR THE COUNT07/27/2004 09:50 PM D
OWN FOR THE COUNT At around 8:50, Soubirous’s campaign manager,
Brian Floyd, received a call from an election observer in Temecula
informing him that the vote count had been stopped – apparently by
Registrar Mischelle Townsend herself. The reason was not made clear.
So Floyd and another Soubirous campaigner named Art Cassel jumped into
a car and drove to Townsend’s office to investigate. Sure enough,
the counting area appeared to be near-deserted. But then they noticed
two men huddled at one of the vote tabulation computers.

Words are used as invectives, toasts, and tirades, among other
forms of human expression. As a type of artistic experiment, Jonathan
Harris of Flaming Toast Productions decided to create this engaging
website that documents the 86,000 most frequently used English words,
ranked in order of commonality. Nay-sayers beware: This is no simple
listing of the words, contained within a mundane series of connected
web pages. As visitors quickly realize, this articulated end-to-end
listing of these 86,000 words features scaled versions of each word,
giving a "visual barometer of relevance." As the site notes, "The goal
is for the user to feel embedded in the language, sifting through
words like an archaeologist through sand, awaiting the unexpected
find." Interestingly enough, the word "God" is one word from "began"
(which is at number 375), and six words from "war." Budding
urbanologists will find it interesting that the word "Chicago" is at
number 6,692 and that "Shanghai" makes into the list at 18,242. [From

Microsoft is not down for the count
Microsoft is not down for the count12/24/2004 01:15 PM No court ordered anything has ever really made any real difference
with Microsoft. Of course they abide by court rulings, after all, they
do play by the rules set out for them - after a huge court battle
anyway. Well, those that feel that MS is down for the count had better
think again. Just because they have been ordered to remove the Windows
Media Player from their Windows operating system, does not mean
that…

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers
UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers07/28/2004 01:06 PM Remember all the controversy over speed cameras that tended to make
spectacularly amusing mistakes? Well, that hasn't stopped the UK from
trying to move forward with special infrared cameras designed to do
even more advanced things, such as counting
the number of passengers in your car to prevent cheaters from
using the carpool/HOV lanes. The researchers working on the
technology claim that it can distinguish between a human and other
non-human passenger items such as a mannequin or a large dog. Of
course, it's not as imaginative as the CarpoolCheats.org folks, who
went around snapping pictures of people cheating their way in the
carpool lane, but that site's been shut down by angry carpool
cheaters, unfortunately.

Another Online Grocer Down For The Count12/26/2003 02:55 PM Lots and lots of companies have tried and failed at the online grocery
game. Even before the biggest and most famous failure, Webvan, came
on the scene, many people thought that the space was dead from folks
like Peapod who had tried and failed to make a go of it. In the last
year there had been some talk about how brick-and-mortar grocery
stores like Safeway and Albertson's were making progress with
integrated online offerings, but apparently even that model isn't
working for everyone. Popular upscale grocer Whole Foods has shut down its own online operations, though,
they don't give much of a reason why.

the seconds or minutes that elapsed before the news could be
broadcast... do they matter at all? Dan Rather says yes. I say: what
clock is this man on? The political moment mattered-- a great
deal. The seconds hardly at all.

Revenge of the Sith toys debuting tonight. Well, one of them

from March 15th, which shows action figures priced at $5.88. However,
as you can see from the scan above, this ad has the action figures
priced at $5.24. BOTH ads have arrived in mailboxes earlier this week!
On a related note, Toys "R" Us stores will price match the Wal-Mart

tonight!
THIS JUST IN! We've gotten in a few reports that Toys "R" Us will
price their figures down to $5.29 until April 9th.

This could just be an isolated incident,
but last night I got my first Gmail invites, so I sent one to my

Can I change the return address of my MSN Hotmail mail?
Can I change the return address of my MSN Hotmail mail?04/04/2005 08:43 AM Dave, I see that you are an expert on Microsoft’s MSN Hotmail
service. Can you tell me whether there’s any way I can configure
my Hotmail account so that when I send mail from that account, it has
a different ‘reply to’ address? That’d be super
helpful and keep me with Hotmail!…
While a person sending out an auto-reply message thinks she’s
doing people a favor by letting them know she’s away for a
while, this message could be doing more harm than good. It’s
time to remind your user community of a few safety and privacy rules
governing e-mail auto-replies. Good tips as well as a way to do a
better Out of Office Reply in Outlook….

Hotmail boosts e-mail storage limit to 250MB06/24/2004 01:19 PM Responding to the thread of defections to Gmail and Yahoo's increase
in e-mail storage, Hotmail has increased the storage limit for
subscribers to its free e-mail service.
Let me see pay Hotmail $19.95 a year for 2 gigs of storage or get
150 megs for free so long as I login once every 30 days to make sure
the account does not get deleted or have virtually unlimited free
storage on Gmail. Seems like a no brainer to me. Nice try in playing
catch up. I think though since I have a paid Hotmail account that I
will copy all of the e-mail I have with attachments to the Hotmail
account and fill it to the brim. Might as well get my $19.95 worth out
of the account. [eWeek]
