DIY Underwater Camera Housing 06/21/2004 01:43 PM

underwater_bag.jpg image

This do-it-yourself waterproof camera enclosure is pretty involved, and isn't the sort of thing you'd want to screw up, even a little, but if you're handy with the heat gun and aren't afraid to get your handheld deburring tool with swiveling cutter a little dirty, you can take pretty much any type of camera you'd like into the drink. Of course, if they make an underwater housing for your camera, it would probably just be easier to buy that, and maybe a little more reliable. Also, just for the record, this will work with your pet turtle Sub Captain Sandy, but only for about three minutes or so.

(Verdict: Awesome)

nikon_d2x_housing.jpgWetpixel has a review of both the Nikon D2X 12.4 MP camera and its Subal ND2 underwater housing. The pictures produced by the camera are vibrant and incredibly well-balanced, which you would expect for the $5,000 it costs. Still, reviewer Dr. Alex Mustard says that if you don't need very large output sizes for your shots, you can purchase a Nikon D70 for considerably less that produces rather decent underwater shots. The housing is designed very well and offers excellent ergonomics—an important consideration when on a dive. Dr. Mustard muses "It costs $5,000. And if you fill it up with water, it is worth $0," but goes on to say "in a word, [the D2X] is awesome." Some gorgeous pics accompany the review, so be sure to check them out. (Thanks, Eric!)

Can You Patent Purchasing Underwater
Options?
01/05/2004 04:56 AM
The latest in bizarre patent applications is a business model patent being applied for by JP Morgan for the concept of buying underwater stock options. How is this patentable? That's unclear, but the folks at JP Morgan think they've hit onto something. They think that many companies trying to help employees get rid of underwater options may sell them to Morgan - following Microsoft's lead (where Microsoft let employees switch over from stock options to restricted stock). Of course, now that the economy is starting to pick up again, companies (and their employees) may be more interested in holding on to their options. Either way, it doesn't explain how making a risky investment is patentable. It's certainly not an original idea. I remember discussing just such a business model with some people in 1998 - when we knew a few people who had left jobs where their options were underwater, and who had no interest in buying them. Of course, we realized that the risk of buying underwater options on a regular basis meant that it could be quite difficult to ever actually make any money - but the folks at JP Morgan are betting the market is turning around and are hoping to buy up now before anyone realizes it.

UNDERWA2a_tech.jpg imageAlthough calling it "underwater SMS" might be a little misleading, the underwater diving computers recently purchased by the Australian Navy from Nautronix sound extremely useful -- and use sound to communicate. The Windows-based PCs use both GPS and sonar to track the position of the divers and underwater object, and can beam messages from one machine to another via acoustically powered network, not unlike a telephone modem. The manufacturer has a wide array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the water.

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PM
We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

So Why Are Housing Prices Still Rising
Here?
03/08/2004 11:18 PM
SF Chronicle: Offshoring's giant target. Jobs are more likely to be shipped overseas from Silicon Valley than any other region in the nation, placing the Bay Area's economic engine directly in the path of the global freight train known as offshoring.

The Housing Bubble, Continued

The Housing Bubble, Continued 06/19/2004 12:14 PM

  • Mercury News (reg req): Economy boosts valley home prices. The median price of a home in Santa Clara County reached $590,000, up 20.2 percent from May 2003, according to DataQuick Information Systems. A total of 2,149 resale houses changed hands in the county last month, a nearly 30 percent increase from a year earlier.
  • It's much more than the economy at work here. It's a mindless, dangerous bubble that shows what a short attention span human beings have when they are infected with greed and/or panic. This particular news story ends witha local public defender who found a lender that offered a "zero-down" loan -- that is, loaned the full selling price with no down payment. I can understand the borrower's motive, though I think it's an incredibly risky move, but the bank making this loan is just irresponsible. So is the real-estate industry that promotes this kind thing, but that's par for the course. Of course, the lender will now push this mortgage into the national market, offloading it to some other company. This is how we have such liquid markets, and the system was a boon in the past, greased as it has been by the likes of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, the giant federal home-loan operations that act as though they have the full faith and credit of the U.S. taxpayer behind them even though they do not. But it is not sustainable, yet nobody in power dares mess with this machinery. What we'll see eventually, if we don't find a way to slowly deflate this bubble, is a massive collapse of the housing market that will in turn spark a severe recession. The truly scary scenario, still not the most likely but growing in probability every day, comes when falling prices for housing lead to massive collapses in the financial industry. But if that occurs, the Fannie Maes and Freddie Macs and the money-center banks with big exposure will be considered too big to fail. We taxpayers will bail them out to the tune of several trillion dollars, an amount that'll make the S&L bailout of the 1980s seem tiny. And the only way that will work will be to re-ignite inflation on an absolutely massive scale, because the only way to make it work will be to ratchet up the money supply in unprecedented fashion. This is a bubble. It will deflate. If it doesn't deflate gently, the nation is in for the worst kind of pain.

Housing Bubble, Continued 04/11/2004 01:19 PM

  • Mercury News: As offers pour in, cutthroat market a boon for sellers. The fast-paced, competitive nature of this spring's Bay Area housing market has participants and observers alike speculating on the reasons -- particularly after three years of severe job losses.
  • The story goes on to offer all the usual reasons, such as a shortage of houses and low interest rates. But there's another very good explanation: rampant speculation of another kind, inducing panic buying like the kind that occurred in the stock market in the late 1990s. This is a bubble that will deflate eventually. It's happening elsewhere, as this NY Times story notes today. The mania will end here, too, and it'll be ugly.

cdface.jpgFriend-of-Gizmodo Scott reviewed his heavy-duty Chase Durer Chronograph, a big, beefy quartz thing that I actually saw on the wrist of Greg Kihn last night. He was one of the contestants of Beat Me Baby One More Time or whatever it's called.

But I digress. This is a quartz chrono with PVD coated body and bracelet. It's water resistant to 1000 feet, meaning you can go diving for the lost treasure of Atlantis. In terms of underwater demolition, however, the watch does not have a remote timer/detonator even though it certainly does look like it should have one.
