There are lots of bright people out
there but only so many Bryght people
08/27/2004 01:47 PMCongrats to Roland and Boris and.....
They've just launched Bryght -
a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was
in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving
there.
Vancouver is hot.
Here's Roland's post....
Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal
service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with
Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this
one. Yes, we are all Bryght
guys :-) !
We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to
give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required,
no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at
Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know
of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght
site, please contact us.
Whither StreamLine you might ask?
StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we
still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging
platform.

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AMCory Doctorow:
Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big
public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with
public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to
photograph this sculpture, though: it's a
copyrighted
sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing
Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their
tax-dollars bought.
If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor
sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then
demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this
guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for
scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase
contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town
on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement
officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human
venality I've heard of all day.
The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by
the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works,
especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that
artist.

New York Times on the toilet
New York Times on the toilet
04/19/2005 11:04 AMDavid Pescovitz:
Today's New York Times has an article about the toilet market with a
few interesting bits about American Standard's design center:
In one room, 12 toilets are flushing as if under ghostly
control; an electronic machine is pulling the virtual levers - and
manipulating water temperature and pressure as well. In smaller rooms
nearby, one man is alternately flushing cylinders of miso paste,
wadded-up paper, and as many as 24 golf balls at a time, while another
is inspecting different glazes on ceramic tiles.
Men and machines are testing and retesting the Champion, a
low-to-medium priced but technically advanced toilet. American
Standard, the world's largest maker of bathroom and kitchen products,
has promised consumers that the Champion will never clog.

Toilet Paper Scalability
03/14/2005 06:06 PMHere's a fun
example of why scalability is hard: What problems do you run into
by going parallel on your toilet paper dispenser?
Although most homes have only single roll holders, most
commercial establishments have long ago switched to devices that hold
multiple rolls. We decided to install one, so we purchased holder of
two rolls, side by side.
We discovered that although we now had two rolls instead of one,
the problem was not solved. Both rolls ran out at the same time. Sure,
it took twice as long before the rolls emptied, but we were still
stuck with the same problem: no more paper. We had discovered that the
switch to two rolls meant we had to use more sophisticated behavior:
the algorithm for tearing of paper mattered.
A fun article with a good look into how computer nerds look at the
world, but it also hints at actual issues with scalability: More does
not automatically equal better.
Toto Intelligence Toilet
Toto Intelligence Toilet
03/29/2005 04:22 AM
Toto's new "Intelligence Toilet" system brings health
measurements only a bathroom away. For mere thousands of dollars, the
Intelligence Toilet system will measure urine sugar, blood pressure,
body fat and weight on a daily basis. Since there is very little human
intervention required, it's almost lazy enough for me to use. The data
can be transferred over a home network too, for viewing on your PC.
Sony Online Entertainment has announced the next version of Everquest
will interface with this as well, so creating an in-game likeness of
yourself is as easy as going to the bathroom.

02/11/2004 09:36 PM Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people
represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they
want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to
account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to
friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions.
Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social
interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied
this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they

Toto's Techno Toilet Tomorrow
Toto's Techno Toilet Tomorrow
05/31/2004 09:49 AM
Apparently toilet technologists Toto have felt the
rains down in Africa one too many times, developing a new backdoor
spritzer known as the 'Washlet' that tries to give a modern-day spin
to the bidet. While Science Toilets are nothing new -- the Japanese
have led this field for decades, for better or worse (see: Tubgirl) --
Toto is pushing the Washlet with all they've got, with videos,
infomercials, and even a multi-story Times Square ad. Will Americans
finally warm up to a warm water pulse on their sour apples? I could
assume, but opinions are like assholes: they often feel cleanest when
hit with a jet of heated steam.
Meanwhile, back in Japan, Toto has added a 'hydroelectric'
convertor that uses the wasted flush energy to power the infrared
sensor, keeping the internal battery charged for up to 10 years. It
even tries to guess what number you've worked out and adjusts the
amount of water as appropriate. (Thanks, Robert!)

Toto's Daily Check-up Toilet
Toto's Daily Check-up Toilet
03/29/2005 08:52 AM
If
I had to pick a toilet company, clearly Toto would be my favorite.
They've moved well beyond the orifice squirting and heating air drying
of standard Japanese space toilets to add glucose level, blood
pressure, fat percentage, and weight testing, all from your urine.
Okay, not exactly, but the whole Toto system, which is currently
set to be sold by the Yamato house building corporation in Japan, does
transform a lowly bathroom into a full-fledged sick bay.
