Marc Laidlaw's lucky lightning photo

Marc Laidlaw's lucky lightning photo

Marc Laidlaw's lucky lightning photo 06/21/2004 01:42 PM

Science fiction writer and Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw was on TV for his lucky accidental photo of a tree being struck by lighting.

He snapped his camera just as lightning struck a tree in his backyard, capturing nature's awesome power. He says he didn't know he had captured the shot, saying the strike was so terrifying, he just turn and ran. It wasn't until he went back and looked at his shots that he realized what he had, first thinking he had a daylight photo mixed in there.

Welcome to our world - Marc

Welcome to our world - Marc 06/22/2005 02:41 AM

I've wanted to start a Marc club for a while now - with Mark Cuban, Marc Andressen, Marc Benioff, Mark Fletcher and any other coolio Marc we can find. So it is with great warmth that I welcome Marc Andressen to our world - with his new 24 Hour Laundry product/service.

Unfortunately many people do not see his latest efforts as anything more than a desperate attempt at an oft failed, living in the shadows of his first and only accomplishment, kind of guy - to get attention by jumping on the bandwagon of social networking and video blogging.

Well I say "welcome"!

Have fun - now try and monetize those efforts. The world of Web 2.0 demands that you prove yourself. No more 'playing up to the VCs and investment bankers' - they don't matter anymore. The only thing that matters is delivering compelling experiences to end-users and supporting open standards.

As long as 24HL does that - I'm in favor of it. If not, then oh well. Marc's got other supporters as well - he deserves it. He's worked hard - and there's no reason to pick on him indiscriminately.

And as far as staying stealth - I guess Marc still thinks that being proprietary and closed is a good thing. Where I come from that's not a good sign, but let's give Marc the benefit of the doubt - shall we?

Lots of coolio stuff was in stealth for a while, like Rojo, Odeo, FM Publishing and even Google uses this technique. So why can't the inventor of modern day browsers do the same?

Oh and BTW Marc - my company Broadband Mechanics can do these jobs for you - very effectively - outsourced - for less money than it would cost you to do it in Silly Valley.

You are 17 years old and play football for your country. You live with your family on a small farm. You have always been fanatical about football and dreamed of playing for a big European club such as Newcastle. When civil war broke out, rebel forces attacked your village. You, like many other Sierra Leoneans, had one of your legs cut off by the soldiers. This practice was widespread. Many victimes died from bloog loss. You are one of just 4,000 people who survived these atrocities.

Find out and be immediately transported to your dream life.

Lucky me

Lucky me 07/28/2004 09:27 AM
You know the gap there's always between the tunnel and the airplane? The one you can see the airstrip from, five meters below you? And the small gangway that you step on?

I've always had a slight fear of dropping something and it would go into the gap and shatter to a thousand pieces after a long drop.

Yesterday it happened.

I dropped my phone, just as I was entering the plane and BANG! It hit the gangway, and broke into three pieces: The innards flew right into the aircraft; the cover flew backwards into the tunnel, and the keyboard strip was left on the gangway. Nothing fell through the gap. I gathered the pieces and managed to get the phone whole and running again, but for a moment I felt a primitive terror grasp my heart.

Losing one's phone is tantamount to losing one's connection to the world. It would be awful. It would be so hard to live without one right now, that it's scary.

When did we suddenly become so reliant and dependent on these small gadgets? Or is it not the gadgets, but the connectivity to other people that is the dependency-inducing factor?

"I bought a car yesterday! Then, I drove home and parked right outside my apartment. Later, I decided to go grocery shopping. When I returned, to my dismay, someone had taken my parking spot. Begrudgingly, I parked somewhere else. Then, around 2:00 AM, I was awoken by a loud rumbling sound, followed by a crash. It happened again, and again, and again... I went outside, and this is what I found..."

Lucky Number 666 08/06/2004 12:51 AM
The number 666 has been drawn by the Pennsylvania Lottery 12 times. Well, legally that is. On April 24, 1980, Pittsburgh personality Nick Perry, host of local TV shows and the live lottery drawing, fixed the lottery drawings. Perry has since passed away, but the story lived on in a (badly made) film adaptation. [more inside]
