Wrinkle in U-NII Expansion Plans

Wrinkle in U-NII Expansion Plans 11/13/2003 02:51 PM
Dewayne Hendricks noticed an interesting omission from the agenda of the FCC's Open Meeting today: Commissioners had planned to discuss adding 255 MHz to the 5 GHz band and Hendricks says observers expected the item to pass. But the item was dropped from the agenda. Wonder why... That additional 255 MHz should translate into as many as 12 additional nonoverlapping channels for 802.11a, which already has 12 nonoverlapping channels. In a talk with Atheros that Glenn had recently, the company noted that bonding channels in 802.11a to create multiple channel throughput of 108 Mbps or higher has enormous potential because of the lack of channel overlap....

That Microsoft XML Patent

That Microsoft XML Patent 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

The coverage from ZDNet says the patent is for the conversion of objects into XML files; but if you read the patent itself, the important “Claim 1” doesn’t even mention XML, it’s just about serializing objects based on using an annotated source file and a schema. I was trying to find a way to write about this without becoming shrill and using bad language, but failing. Fortunately, I ran across a good opinion, shrill but not obscene, penned by Greg Aharonian who’s a real actual patent lawyer and thus qualified. Herewith a little bit of my own shrillness, followed by Greg’s professional evisceration of this extreme case of patent bogosity. [Update: slight correction regarding Don Box.]...

Encinitas inventor William Louis has been fighting Microsoft Corp. since 1998 over patents for ergonomic keyboards – with very little success. Yesterday, he finally had something to smile about. A federal appeals court resurrected Louis' long-running federal lawsuit accusing the software company of patent infringement. In the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the court said a U.S. District Court judge in San Diego made a mistake when she ruled that patents held by TypeRight Keyboard Corp. for V-shaped keyboards with wrist rests were invalid. Louis co-founded TypeRight in the early '90s.
