mlClinicalTrials.gov is a federally funded database of
clinical trials, open and accessible to the public. Part of the
National Institutes of Health, it provides information about a trial's
purpose, who may participate, locations, even phone numbers for more
details. Led by Alexa McCray, director of the Lister Hill National
Center for Biomedical Communications, the site has been embraced by
millions of people trying to puzzle their way through the often
Byzantine world of clinical trials. It currently includes information
about 11,100 trials, including those carried out by NIH, other federal
agencies and private industry. Trained in linguistics, McCray is a
strong advocate of distilling complex medical terminology into simple,
everyday language. The goal is to help prospective patients make
informed choices, after weighing the benefits and risks of taking part
in medical trials. Critics complain about the limited scope of the
database, particularly when it comes to clinical trials carried out by
the private drug industry. The American Medical Association, among
others, say pharmaceutical companies should be forced to register
details about the opening of a drug trial and its results, something
which is currently optional. Some industry officials complain that
such a requirement would compromise proprietary information. McCray
believes mandatory registration would lead to more effective research.
"Patients have the right to this kind of information, whether it's
clinical trials data or the latest literature on medical breakthroughs
or just getting a better understanding of some condition that you or a
family member suffers from."

Prosthetic rat-hippocampus goes into
clinical tests
03/13/2003 10:24 AMA research lab in California is testing the world's first "brain
prosthesis," an artificial hippocampus that interfaces directly with
rat-brains. Primates in less than a year.
The job of the hippocampus appears to be to "encode" experiences so
they can be stored as long-term memories elsewhere in the brain. "If
you lose your hippocampus you only lose the ability to store new
memories," says Berger. That offers a relatively simple and safe way
to test the device: if someone with the prosthesis regains the ability
to store new memories, then it's safe to assume it works.
The inventors of the prosthesis had to overcome three major hurdles.
They had to devise a mathematical model of how the hippocampus
performs under all possible conditions, build that model into a
silicon chip, and then interface the chip with the brain.
No one understands how the hippocampus encodes information. So the
team simply copied its behaviour. Slices of rat hippocampus were
stimulated with electrical signals, millions of times over, until they
could be sure which electrical input produces a corresponding output.
Putting the information from various slices together gave the team a
mathematical model of the entire hippocampus.

The Kos Controversy
The Kos Controversy
04/09/2004 03:55 PMMarkos Moulitsas Zúniga, the webmaster of the Scoop-powered lefty blog
Daily Kos, recently made controversial comments regarding the four
Americans killed in Falluja. More precisely, he said "screw them."
He later posted a clarification of his comments, but stopped short of
an apology. So, Instapundit, Tacitus, and many other sites have
condemned the comment. Some advertisers have taken their ads off the
site, the Kerry campaign took down their link to Daily Kos, and people
have generally said "rabble rabble rabble." Tacitus and others have
even suggested that Daily Kos should no longer raise money for the
Democrats.

The Konfabulator Controversy
06/30/2004 10:45 PMinessential.com:
Weblog: What should Apple do?: There's a bit of a controversy
brewing in Macland about the WWDC
conference and the Konfabulator knockoff Apple
introduced called Dashboard.
The theory is that Apple saw a great third-party app that people
loved, and decided it needed to be part of the OS itself.
Apple can’t do everything — they need other
developers to make software for OS X too. What concerns me is the
message the Dashboard thing sends. It goes like this, "If you come up
with a good idea and develop a successful product, we might copy it
and bundle it for free with the OS."
The Konfabulator folks, for their part, are having some fun with
it, poking fun of the posters that poked fun at Microsoft with a
banner on
their site that says, "Cupertino [where Apple is based], start your
photocopiers!"
Konfabulator was apparently written by some ex-Apple employes, and
they had this to say:
Regarding the conspiracy theory about Konsposé and prior
knowledge of Dashboard, here's the scoop. We knew Dashboard was
coming, and we'd been told by *many* people that it was being
developed as a "Konfabulator Killer". We never knew the specifics of
it other than it was rumored to be the exact same thing as
Konfabulator integrated at the system level. We didn't know that it
was going to be touted as part of Exposé, and we didn't know that
their format was going to be closer to a web page than a structured
XML file.
The threat of having the OS subsume your original work is a threat
Windows developers have lived with for years. I've always wondered
what happened to WinZip and PKZip sales
when Windows XP was introduced with integrated zip
functionality.

e Madness: Dean
over at blogs4God presents a really good wrap-up of the furor over the
new Movable Type release.
Unbeknowst to me, Six Apart
made a change over the weekend to say that mutiple Weblogs in MT
used to create one site (for instance, if you have another blog to
handle static pages for your site), do not count towards the Weblog
limit in the license. They also removed a single CPU restriction that
they said was in there by mistake, are allowing you to purchase
additional blog/author packs for $10 each, and have increased the
number of authors allowed in the mid-level version from 3 to 5.
Don Park links to some good
resources as well, including this very wise
column by Timothy Appnel over at O'Reilly:
As a developer and one who makes a living writing code,
this reaction to Six Apart's new licensing is really disheartening and
on a certain level frustrating to see. I am a firm believer and backer
of free software. [...] I've personally released quite a bit of open
source code myself and will continue to do so. However this apparent
expectation of the vocal part of community that it is their right to
have all great works of software at no cost is bothersome. If users
don't have the funds or won't pay on principle for my time, effort or
talent – how do I eat?
He makes a good point. Not everything in the world can be free, as
much as we would like it. Yes, I love free software, but I also know
when stuff is worth paying for. I'm reminded about what Nick Bradbury wrote in the pre-release FAQ to FeedDemon:
Will FeedDemon be free? Will it be open source? Sorry,
no. I have nothing against open source, but I also have two kids to
feed :)
I personally don't have a problem with Six Apart charging for this
version. Movable Type was a gift so far, and I guess I never expected
it to be free forever. I think they could have priced it a little
lower, but it's still worth it.

S.D. Library Web Site Controversy
S.D. Library Web Site Controversy
07/13/2004 03:44 PMS.D. governor pulls plug on part of library Web
site: Our governor, Mike Rounds, ordered some links removed from
the youth section of the South Dakota State Library Web
site this week because they linked to "inappropriate content."
The governor's office isn't identifying the links, but sources say
they were links to Planned Parenthood.
It's not censorship, Rounds said, because people can still
see the content by going directly to the sites. Others will have to
wait until state officials decide whether the sites are appropriate to
be linked from a state page, he said.
People are upset.
"The governor is not the master father of the state of
South Dakota," said Judith Krug, director of the American Library
Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. "At least I don't think
he was elected on that basis."
I saw a group of people protesting outside the public library in
downtown Sioux Falls yesterday. At the time, I didn't know what they
were asking people to honk for. I didn't honk, just in case the signs
read, "Honk if you're an eff-ing moron." That's happened to me once
before.
