IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM
For embedded computing
hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating
piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard
drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole
deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash
card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection;
that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device
Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining
feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating
specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard
drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when
necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around
$2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives
instead.

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for
hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

"The relational database is designed to serve up rows and columns,"
said BEA's Adam Bosworth in his keynote talk. "But our model of the
world is documents. It's 'Tell me everything I want to know about this
person or this clinical trial.' And those things are not flat, they're
complex. Now we have the way to get not only the hospital records and
prescriptions but also the doctor's write-ups."
The doctors and bankers will get that, just as the highway patrolmen
already do. XML documents, flowing through XML plumbing, can now
deliver very real and tangible benefits. For the publishing geeks who
started it all, it's a moment to savor. [Full story at

Learning to Rest
Learning to Rest
12/08/2003 08:08 AMAdam
Bosworth: I admit to not being a REST expert and the people
commenting, Mike Dierkin and Mark Baker in particular, certainly
are. They tell me I'm all wet about the REST issues. I'll dig into
it. But I admit, I don't get it. I need to be educated.
I personally think that the place to start is to first tease
apart the "HTTP is the one true protocol" from the "REST is the one
true architecture", and then initially focus on the latter.
Once done, you may come back to believe in one or both of these,
but they can be addressed independently.
To draw an analogy, Java 1.0 did not have a component
model. A convention of getters and setters methods
corresponding to a property emerged. Getters always have zero
parameters, setters typically have one.
On the web, there is an analogous component model.
Resources have a GET and POST method (as well as a few
others). This is not one per property, but one per resource
(object). This encourages a coarse grained approach to
integration - something that scales better than fine grained
access.
Nothing in REST requires or precludes an equivalent to
WSDL. However, nothing in WSDL today models the interaction
that is typical of WSDL itself: "at this address is a document of a
given type. If you GET it, you will find a strongly typed
description of another resource (endpoint)".
Anybody with experience in database design will tell you that it
makes sense to focus a lot of energy on optimizing reads. The
web does this well.
Other principles that apply: all persistent resources have
identifiers. No implicit state.
I have further thoughts posted at
REST+SOAP. I'd also point to
The Eight
Fallacies of Distributed Computing, but alas, it has gone
404. (The concept of 404 itself is an important implication
of a REST design).

03/11/2003 11:53 AMMy POW, FWIW:
The sweet spot is GET and POST of
XML Infomation
Sets. REST's content independence and SOAP's transport
independence are simultaneously both key strengths and weaknesses
of each approach. Both contain speculative features that have not
been widely adopted (e.g., DELETE? Content-Negotiation?). The most
underrated feature of SOAP is asynchronous messaging.

ReST vs RPC Redux
03/11/2003 11:53 AMIt looks like SOAP is destined to continue to be maligned and
misunderstood.
Dave Winer is
upset because not everybody limits themselves to his
narrow RPC profile of
SOAP usage. Non-RPC usage of SOAP isn't new - it was always
in the
spec.
And things that fit Dave's narrow profile continue to interop.
Mark Baker is
upset because SOAP permits usages which are not, in his and
many people's opinion, well architected. Usages such as
RPC. While many of Mark's arguments resonate with me, he
tends to throw the baby out with the bathwater. He might as
well say that Python is not a good language for building REST
systems because it can also be used for RPC.
Meanwhile, where Mark
throws up
his hands, others are
making progress.

09/07/2004 06:47 AM
Sony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has
been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at
this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host
of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture
video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a
projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a
pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most
prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should
be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected
tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Sony's $60 iPod? No way
11/06/2003 01:54 AMThe Register echoes our skepticism about Sony's announcement that
they're planning a $60 MP3 player to compete with the iPod:Sony hasn't
said that its $60 music player will feature a high capacity hard drive
as the iPod does - or is as compact as the Apple machine. Hard drive
prices are falling, it's true, but ultra-compact, high capacity models
are still pretty expensive, and eat up much of the cost of
manufacturing a hard drive-based music player. We've no doubt that
Sony will offer such a device of its own, but the $60 model isn't it.
That's less than half the price of a typical 128MB solid-state MP3
player, for heaven's sake. What Sony is probably planning is some sort
of barebones player that can have a hard drive attached to it or
something like that....

Despite the ever-present push towards "smaller,"
there's nothing small about Sony's new "DCR-DVD301" DVD Handycam's
screen. At first glance, it appears to be a standard DVD Handycam -
same 1.4GB 8cm DVD writing, and more or less the same specifications -
but when you look twice, you realize this new unit is equipped with a
3.5" LCD. Indeed, Sony has added a full inch in at least one area,
which is more than anyone can ask, really.
"With great LCD screens comes great price," my uncle once said, and
apparently he was right on target: you'll pay nearly $1,100 for this
camera, presuming it gets released in America for a similar price as
the Japanese market.

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,

08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.
