04/08/2005 10:28 AM“An Australian security firm is about to launch a clustered
Linux distribution that aims to utilize the unused nightly processing
power of desktop PCs. Dubbed CHAOS, the software is able to remotely
boot a computer and run it on Linux without affecting the local hard
disk. With enough PCs, this has the potential of creating a
distributed supercomputer. The project was driven by one challenge:
the lack of time, said Sydney-based Pure Hacking, which

I haven't heard a lot about these Lluon PCs -- and
unfortunately their Korean-language site is in Flash, which breaks the
'fish -- but it looks like they're making some fairly attractive PCs
and monitors, if shiny white plastic gets you going. The "All In One"
in particular [pictured] is v. v. hot, even if proprietary,
hard-to-fix machines in general aren't. Anyway, I submit them for your
approval; no idea if they'll ever make it to the US. (Thanks,
Lars!)

« Krishnas on the Esplanadi. Shiny happy people. »
I always used to associate Krishnas with airports and vegetarian
food. People smile, point and giggle at them as people dancing around
and chanting might seem odd in places where dancing around and
chanting are reserved for the drunks or the insane, but since living
in Finland I've grown rather fond of them because they smile at
everyone in a place where smiling at strangers just isn't done. People
make fun of you if you're too happy and dancing and people think
you're a freak if you're a cynical grump so it's no wonder most people
take the stonefaced option.
It's going to be a crap week as, aside from all the other things
getting me down, it is likely time to discuss the kevorkian option for
HoneyBear with the vet. And, I'm one year older today, too. Yay. Maybe
I should go join the Krishnas.

Shiny Happy Soccer Moms or Shallow and
Solipsistic Feminism?
Shiny Happy Soccer Moms or Shallow and
Solipsistic Feminism?
04/09/2004 04:11 PMAs I'll be out and about for the next few weeks with spotty
Internet access it seems as though it is time to turn over the
blogging to others. Here then is a guest submission from
an anonymous-for-the-moment philosopher queen hailing from
the beautiful farm country just north of the Mason-Dixon Line...
In October, the President’s Council on Bioethics (www.bioethics.gov) released a 400+
page report on biotechnology, entitled "Beyond Therapy." The report
rings of Luddism, arguing that our unbridled pursuit of individual
happiness in the form of "mood brighteners" (read: Prozac and other
SSRI drugs) is turning us into a society of shallowness and solipsism.
Psychiatry is transforming into "cosmetic psychopharmacology" (Peter
Kramer’s phrase). If we find ourselves unable to mingle well at
parties, or we tend toward melodrama thus irritating our companions,
doctors now have a diagnosis for us that entitles us to a prescription
for little green tablets that will remake us into more congenial and
thereby socially rewarded selves. Melancholy is decidedly
passé.
What the report misses is that 70% of SSRI prescriptions are
written for women. Moreover, most advertisements for SSRIs feature
shiny happy "soccer moms," better able to juggle the demands of work
and family. Prozac, it seems, is really mother’s little helper,
especially in a service-economy that relies on women participating in
the work force. Kramer proposed that Prozac was a "feminist" drug,
making women more assertive, less sensitive to rejection, and thereby
far better employees in traditionally male-dominated fields (Lis
tening to Prozac). Prozac makes women more like men.
So what’s wrong with this? After all, feminism fought to get us in
the door. But, we didn’t realize we were still a bit too feminine to
make it in the marketplace. Isn’t the President’s report just another
case of male anxiety over women’s liberation? After all, feminism will
have succeeded once women can be just as solipsistic and shallow as
men, right?
[Editor's note: We were watching Tchaikovsky's Queen of
Spades the other night (Herman starts off the opera by
talking about how he is going to kill himself
because he is in love with a woman whom he's never actually
spoken to and finds out that she is engaged to a prince).
One of our friends remarked "These opera characters wouldn't have done
any of this stuff if they'd had Prozac back then."]

12/19/2004 03:36 PMBlogging at ALA Midwinter - Be a Part of it
I will be working with the Public Library Association on
an official weblog (you heard that right - official). We will be
kicking it off by reporting on PLA-related events at ALA Midwinter.
This is going to be huge. Very huge. There will be photographs. There
will be interviews with presenters, attendees, exhibitors, and PLA
members. There will be reports from the meetings (if allowed), keynote
addresses, dinner meetings and networking functions. There will
hopefully be special reports from committee members. My point? We're
going to blog it and we're going to blog hard. And, we're going to do
it right.
Why do I say we? Because I need your help.
I am looking for a bunch of people (20 or so) who will be willing
to report on the conference and post to the PLA
blog....
Steven gets one of the
biggies! Help him out, because this will be the start of something
big. Congratulations, Steven - way to go!

charities. It needs a shoulder strap, though, or they'll have to start

Today is aviation's
100th birthday. At
10:35am Eastern, the
Experimental Aircraft
Association will attempt to
re-enact the first flight
of the
Wright
Brothers' "mar
ginal" aircraft. (It's apparently
very difficult to
fly -- for one thing, the pilot must keep the airspeed between 27 and
32 mph, using an engine without a throttle.) Wish I could be there in
NC at the
Wright Brothers National
Memorial.
It's utterly astounding that only 66 years -- less than a lifetime --
elapsed between Orville Wright's twelve-second, 120-foot flight and
the
Apollo 11 moon landing.

So I want to hate this, but
the little astronaut inside of me is squealing (I think he's running

sell you a laptop bag (of unknown quality) that incorporates an
authentic piece of the parachute from the 1990 Soyuz TM-8 Space
mission. That's right -- part of this bag has been in space.
And if the Russian space program isn't your bag (oh god, I'm
sorry), they also have a series of satchels made from the sails of the
1974-1977 America's Cup winner that might just float your boat (I'm
here all week, you unlucky bastards). The America's Cup bags are only
$145.
