Sharp's Quick Release Screws
Sharp's Quick Release Screws

LIAM "THE INTERN" MCNULTY --
You're probably looking at that image on the right and
thinking, "...uhh...." Well, I'd like everyone to know that I
translated that image. Yes, I employed my superior Paint Shop Pro
skills, took out the Japanese text, and replaced it with the English
text that would fit in its place. And I did it without using any lens
flares.
This image was in Japanese because it's coming from Sharp, who has
for some reason decided they don't really like screwdrivers. As part
of Sharp's international "screw screws" campaign, they've developed
some "Easy Release Screws," which when heated to 100 degrees Celsius
(212 degrees Fahrenheit for normal people), will have a special washer
section expand, allowing for easy removal of the screw, (if you're a
robot with super-heated hands, of course).
One of the primary applications of the screws will be appliances;
recycling them requires dissasembly, which requires manual labor. With
these new screws, machines could easily take apart a TV in a tenth (as
Sharp estimates) of the time it takes a mere human.

A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day
with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up
to the Internet with a
14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his
train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last
morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID
"FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to
assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default
Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

FCC screws America, adopts Broadcast
Flag, doom, gloom, armageddon
11/04/2003 07:12 PMWe've lost a round in the Broadcast Flag fight. The FCC today decided
that it didn't need to listen to the tens of thousands of Americans
that wrote to it, asking to have this terrible proposal set aside, and
instead adopted a rule proposed by billionaire movie studios whose
biggest problem is figuring out how to spend the riches they made off
the VCR after we saved their asses by telling them to get bent when
they tried to get the Betamax banned the last time around.
"The FCC today has taken a step that will shape the future
of television," said EFF Senior Intellectual Property
Attorney Fred von Lohmann. "Sadly, this represents a step in
the wrong direction, a step that will undermine innovation,
fair use, and competition."
"The broadcast flag rule forces manufacturers to remove
useful recording features from television products you can
buy today," said EFF Staff Technologist Seth Schoen. "The
FCC has decided that the way to get Americans to adopt
digital DTV is to make it cost more and do less."

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy
07/16/2004 04:50 PMA few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's
WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.
