Microsoft's PlaysForSure Logo Program
Attracts New Industry Partners and
Expands to Connected Televisions, New
Portable Devices
01/06/2005 12:17 AMToday at 2005 International CES, Microsoft Corp. announced broad,
additional support for the PlaysForSure™ logo program - both for
devices and upcoming services. In addition to many portable music
players that are PlaysForSure-verified, there are now new televisions
and DVD players designed for PlaysForSure compatibility that feature
built-in connections to wireless or wired home networks for the easy
playback of photos, as well as subscription-based music and video via
a Windows® XP-based PC. At CES 2005, D-Link Systems Inc. and Digitrex
debuted connected high-definition (HD) TVs, HD displays and DVD
players designed to be part of the PlaysForSure logo program, and
Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. demonstrated a concept plasma display.
In addition, a range of new color-screen, mini-hard-drive portable
devices supporting both music and photos are designed to be
PlaysForSure-verified, including the Gateway MP3 Photo Jukebox, iriver
H10 and the Samsung YH-925 and YH-820. First announced at Microsoft's
Digital Entertainment Anywhere launch event in October, the
PlaysForSure logo is designed to help consumers with Windows XP-based
PCs choose devices and online music and video stores that work
together, taking the guesswork out of compatibility.

Garbage man severs my phone, TV cable,

Garbage man severs my phone, TV cable,
internet, drives away
03/19/2005 03:03 AMMark Frauenfelder:

I don't understand why garbage men always seem
angry? What's to be angry about? They are well paid, have no deadlines
or stress, never have to get their butt out of their seat, get
excellent health benefits, paid vacation, and so on.
Garbage men never have to worry about getting fired, no matter how
badly they screw up. That's probably why the Los Angeles garbage man
who snapped my phone, TV cable, and internet lines, damaging my roof
in the process, drove away without so much as a note with a number we
could call. A neighbor saw the whole thing happen this morning. The
driver shrugged and kept on going. "Not my problem," he probably
thought to himself, assuming he had enough empathy to realize he had
inconvenienced another person.
Now there are cables stretched across the road. I called the city,
and they told me they'll send me a paper form in the mail to fill out.
That's the city's way of dealing with the problem quickly.
The cable guy is here now, but he said he couldn't fix it until the
pole on the roof was fixed. I climbed up on the roof and unbent the
pole enough for him to pull the cable through.
The phone company won't come until Saturday. Meanwhile, the garbage
man is probably downloading internet porn, yelling at his ex-wife's
child support lawyer on the phone, and watching Die Hard VIII on
cable, because nobody snapped his wires. I don't like you, garbage
man.

Recording Industry To Sue Mobile Phone
Operator Over MP3 Playing Phones
06/03/2004 01:45 PMBack in April we had what we hoped was an April Fool's joke: that the
Korean music industry had forced
mobile
phone operators to make their MP3-playing mobile phones destroy
MP3s. The plan was originally to force the phones degrade the
quality of MP3s, but eventually a plan was worked out to force the
phones to delete any MP3s after 72 hours. Apparently, none of this
was enough, and the industry is now
looking to sue. With all the success of both broadband and
wireless technologies in Korea, it's amazing that an industry could be
so backwards to believe that they can actually grow a market by
breaking the applications that people want.

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
05/03/2004 05:18 AMCable providers in the US took an early lead in the broadband market,
though they've lost a little ground lately due to cut rate prices for
DSL from the telcos. However, the cable providers are looking to pull
an ace out of their sleeve by promoting their ability to easily
provide the coveted "triple play" of voice, video and data through one
single company. Many cable providers have been able to do this for a
while, but they haven't spent much time promoting their phone service.
That's about to change. While the telcos are still struggling to
figure out their video strategy (TV over DSL? partner with a
satellite provider?), the cable companies are getting ready to
heavily promote
their VoIP phone plans in conjunction with their TV and broadband
connections. They admit that most people still don't know the cable
company offers phone service, but they aim to change that soon.
Beyond just getting more money out of each subscriber, it also means
much less churn for the cable companies, as studies have shown that
the likelihood of a customer switching providers drops drastically for
each additional service they receive from their provider. While the
article doesn't mention much about pricing, it would make sense for
the cable companies to cut the prices on the phone service
drastically. The additional cost to the companies isn't that high,
and undercutting the telcos in their core market has to hurt them.
Besides, as the article points out, choosing a phone company is much
more of an "emotional" decision than choosing a broadband provider.
If the cable companies can win over the emotions of people with very
low priced calling plans, they'll more than make up the difference in
new customers for their broadband and video services - and the
resulting lack of churn.

10/31/2003 11:44 AMBeck writes
"Maybe women don't want to be seen visiting the adult book store in
the red light district, but they're flocking to adult web sites. According to
Nielsen NetRatings, nearly one in three visitors to adult web sites is
a woman. The news article goes on to describe how some women think it
is healthy and normal, and others think it can lead to problems. In
any case it appears to be a common misperception that it is only men
who visit pornographic web sites. There are a few interesting
anecdotes in the article, including one where the editors of Today's
Christian Woman magazine found in a survey that 34 percent of their
readers had intentionally visited porn sites."
