About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

It is being deduced that the Beagle author released the source code so that if he was caught he can claim that the source code is available on the net to help divert attention away from him. What is also interesting is the code is written in pure assembler proving this was no amateur. Expect a significant number variants of the Beagle worm to be on the loose soon. [ZDNet]

Microsoft Releases Source Code on SourceForge By Mary Jo Foley
http://www. eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1561989,00.asp

On Monday, Microsoft released some of its code under an open-source license, and posted it on SourceForge, the open-source code repository. To date, Microsoft has made its source code available under a variety of licensing mechanisms, all under its "shared source" umbrella. But until today, the company had not released code under what is commonly considered a true open-source license. Microsoft made available an internally developed product called the Windows Installer XML (WiX) to SourceForge. The code is downloadable here.

Allegiance was an incredible experience for the development team. We were all first-timers, trying our best to create a fun, innovative, challenging game. We think we succeeded there, even if we failed at being commercially successful. Allegiance seemed to die all too soon—for a variety of reasons. But we’ve been amazed at the level to which some of the Allegiance fans have remained hard-core. We’re astounded at the progress that has been made at creating new factions, hosting new servers, replacing authentication, etc. It seems that Allegiance hasn’t really died.

Office Source Code

Office Source Code 09/21/2004 01:11 AM
I’ve been trying to think of something intelligent and new to say about Microsoft’s recent Office source code maneuver, but Simon Phipps took care of it. Anyhow, when it comes to Office software, I’m less interested in its code (source or object) which should be disposable and replaceable, than I am in its output. Some call them “office documents”; I prefer “intellectual heritage”, “racial memory”, “crystallized thought”, “priceless treasure”, that kind of thing. They need to be taken care of better than they are, I think, and others agree.

What is the true value of source code?

What is the true value of source code? 07/14/2004 11:42 AM
In my last article here on ITMJ, I challenged traditional notions of the importance of source code access in open source. Most point to source code availability as the premier benefit open source delivers, without offering any substantive reasons to support the claim. As I noted, while open access to source code may matter for some, its benefits pale in comparison to the benefits associated with open source distribution. In summary, open source business models yield dramatically lower sales, marketing, and product distribution costs, enabling upstart competitors to undercut established vendors on price while providing their customers Porsche technology at Pinto pricing.

Bill Wilson's little "single process stack of system monitors" known as GKrellM has become so popular some refer to it (or just use it) as geek eye-candy rather than as the very nice performance monitoring tool that it is. In fact, GKrellM is so popular it may have more plugins than other projects have users. Actually, I think it's not so much that GKrellM has morphed itself into eye-candy so much as that since the very beginning it's been designed as a Swiss Army knife kind of utility.

blessing of spring

blessing of spring 05/11/2004 01:32 PM
Anne and I were training yesterday, doing the neighborhood route, and we passed a bunch of animals: mostly other people walking dogs, but a bunch of birds and some cats, too, including a tiny kitten who called to us from the window of a neighbor's house when we passed. I thought about our dogs and cats, and the birds that are nesting in my backyard, and it made me happy.

Felix is doing really well, considering how close he was to death's door just last week. He is eating a ton of food, and is super feisty. I still don't want to get my hopes too high, but I think we have weathered the latest storm.

Blogging With The Boss's Blessing By Michelle Conlin and Andrew Park
BusinessWeek Online

http://snipurl.com/7b1w

More companies are helping employees to speak freely -- and bond with customers. Until recently, the thought of employees blabbing freely to the masses about their work on company time -- without the suits from PR hovering over them to stay "on message" -- would have created panic in the executive suite. But in the past year, employee blogs have begun to multiply across Corporate America -- and a growing number of companies approve. It started mostly as a techie thing when engineers and product developers at places such as Macromedia, Sun Microsystems (SUNW ), and Dell (DELL ) began posting first-draft free-for-alls of their own volition as a way of communicating with customers, each other, and the outside world. Though employees represent just a fraction of the 2.7 million bloggers today, experts predict they will grow robustly as consumers demand information in a more unvarnished way. Increasingly, execs see employee blogs as a way to transform a transaction with a faceless behemoth into a personal relationship with an employee. Blogs are also hyper efficient at driving product innovation. And they create loyal audiences. Once people get hooked, they keep coming back for more.[beSpacific 6-23-04]
