Garbage man severs my phone, TV cable,
internet, drives away
03/19/2005 03:03 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: Dscn0194 I don't understand why garbage men always seem angry? What's to be angry about? They are well paid, have no deadlines or stress, never have to get their butt out of their seat, get excellent health benefits, paid vacation, and so on.

Garbage men never have to worry about getting fired, no matter how badly they screw up. That's probably why the Los Angeles garbage man who snapped my phone, TV cable, and internet lines, damaging my roof in the process, drove away without so much as a note with a number we could call. A neighbor saw the whole thing happen this morning. The driver shrugged and kept on going. "Not my problem," he probably thought to himself, assuming he had enough empathy to realize he had inconvenienced another person.

Now there are cables stretched across the road. I called the city, and they told me they'll send me a paper form in the mail to fill out. That's the city's way of dealing with the problem quickly.

The cable guy is here now, but he said he couldn't fix it until the pole on the roof was fixed. I climbed up on the roof and unbent the pole enough for him to pull the cable through.

The phone company won't come until Saturday. Meanwhile, the garbage man is probably downloading internet porn, yelling at his ex-wife's child support lawyer on the phone, and watching Die Hard VIII on cable, because nobody snapped his wires. I don't like you, garbage man.

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?

Your New Phone Company Is The Cable
Company?
05/03/2004 05:18 AM
Cable providers in the US took an early lead in the broadband market, though they've lost a little ground lately due to cut rate prices for DSL from the telcos. However, the cable providers are looking to pull an ace out of their sleeve by promoting their ability to easily provide the coveted "triple play" of voice, video and data through one single company. Many cable providers have been able to do this for a while, but they haven't spent much time promoting their phone service. That's about to change. While the telcos are still struggling to figure out their video strategy (TV over DSL? partner with a satellite provider?), the cable companies are getting ready to heavily promote their VoIP phone plans in conjunction with their TV and broadband connections. They admit that most people still don't know the cable company offers phone service, but they aim to change that soon. Beyond just getting more money out of each subscriber, it also means much less churn for the cable companies, as studies have shown that the likelihood of a customer switching providers drops drastically for each additional service they receive from their provider. While the article doesn't mention much about pricing, it would make sense for the cable companies to cut the prices on the phone service drastically. The additional cost to the companies isn't that high, and undercutting the telcos in their core market has to hurt them. Besides, as the article points out, choosing a phone company is much more of an "emotional" decision than choosing a broadband provider. If the cable companies can win over the emotions of people with very low priced calling plans, they'll more than make up the difference in new customers for their broadband and video services - and the resulting lack of churn.

Beck writes "Maybe women don't want to be seen visiting the adult book store in the red light district, but they're flocking to adult web sites. According to Nielsen NetRatings, nearly one in three visitors to adult web sites is a woman. The news article goes on to describe how some women think it is healthy and normal, and others think it can lead to problems. In any case it appears to be a common misperception that it is only men who visit pornographic web sites. There are a few interesting anecdotes in the article, including one where the editors of Today's Christian Woman magazine found in a survey that 34 percent of their readers had intentionally visited porn sites."

Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor? 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
AP: Amazon.com invades Google's turf with Silicon Valley startup.Seattle-based Amazon has dubbed its search startup "A9" and set up offices in Palo Alto, not far from Google's Mountain View headquarters. A9 hopes to launch in October with 30 employees and grow much larger as it develops a search engine that will be licensed to other Web sites, said spokeswoman Alison Diboll. [...] Unlike Google, A9 isn't trying to develop an all-purpose search engine that indexes billions of Web pages. Instead, the startup is focusing on a search engine sweet spot -- e-commerce.The article is very vague so it's hard to get a handle one exactly what A9 is, but it does sound a lot like Froogle, Google's shopping search engine. Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads

Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads
07/06/2004 05:28 AM
The whole Google selling trademarked ads issue is getting ridiculous. Now a bunch of lawyers are arguing over it, after one lawyer bought Google ads on the name of a competitor. The competitor in question sent a nastygram to the lawyer saying he was trying to "sponge" off his reputation. Except... that's not true. As the accused lawyer in question points out, he just put his name where potential customers might be looking for it. As we've pointed out before this is no different than a new soda company wanting to be placed on the shelf next to Coca-Cola. They know people will go looking for Coke, and they want to make sure their bottles on there as well. The purpose of trademark law is to protect someone from being lied to when one company claims they're something they aren't. However, to just make sure your advertisements appear where people are looking for your competitors is simply good business. The reporter then goes out and digs up a bunch of quotes from other lawyers suggesting that the ad-buying lawyer is an underhanded bastard who is somehow "cheating." It's pretty clear from the quotes that most of the quoted lawyers don't understand the actual issue at hand, but that doesn't seem to stop the reporter from quoting them all, without quoting a single source (other than the accused lawyer) with the opposing viewpoint.
