Bamford gets in the game

Bamford gets in the game 06/20/2004 12:41 PM

Pretext for War

I've refrained from buying one of the hundreds of books about 911 and the "war on terror" over the past several years because I think much of their content is speculation and conjecture. However, James Bamford has recently published a book that has my full interest: A Pretext for War: 9/11, Iraq, and the Abuse of America's Intelligence Agencies. Bamford is an excellent researcher and superior analyst which is apparent in his previous books on the intelligence community. Especially now that the 911 commission appears to be making more progress in getting at the truth than I had hoped, I am looking forward to reading this book and watching the 911 reports expose the largesse and corruption which ultimately are responsible for the success of the attacks and support for a war that should never have been allowed to happen.

On a side note, my connectivity has been about as zippy [when it's actually functioning] as sucking cold molasses through a straw lately and, along with Finnish classes and spam clogging my .mac inbox, if you've sent me an email and I've not responded yet please don't despair as I'm not ignoring you. :) We're getting ADSL in a few weeks so this may help things along.

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. It appears that Sony has now patented the concept of beaming sensory info directly into your brain without requiring any kind of invasive surgery or anything (phew!). They claim it could be used in video games either to add in sensory info like smell and taste, but also to provide richer gaming experiences for deaf and blind people. While there is something both fascinating and creepy about this idea, it seems like the sort of thing that would have plenty of uses outside of the video game world -- and those might be a bit more impressive than just letting people really jack into a game. Anyway, since patents don't actually have to be based on something that actually works, this idea is... well... mostly just in someone's brain.

EA: Still Got Game 06/24/2005 07:07 PM

“Like the embattled hero of one of its own video games, Electronic Arts (TR Large Cap 100) is facing a spate of challenges — including a difficult and costly console transition phase and increasingly tough publisher-rivals — that may force the world’s largest video-game publisher to expand into new arenas. These challenges came into sharp focus in early May when EA announced that its profits had plunged more than 90 percent in its last fiscal…
