Sprint has announced that it will start selling camera-less Treo 600 smart phones from PalmOne, the Milpitas maker of the popular handheld devices. Why? To satisfy customers fearful of corporate espionage inside their businesses. I suppose it's always better to sell what the customer wants. But I have bad news for Sprint's worried customers: This won't help much, because the pace of technology means cameras will soon disappear from view, embedded in clothing and eyeglasses, not just phones. Resistance is futile

« Resistance is futile puny human. You are going to drop that ice cream any moment now. Obey my hypnotic stare. »

I watched this little dog crawl under the bench and gaze lovingly at a German man's ice cream. Sadly, the man was immune to his Jedi mind tricks and he consumed the entire thing without sharing. I almost felt badly enough to go get one and give him some. :) These are supposedly the 'Dog Days' of summer, but if it keeps raining the way it has been we are all going to have to consider buying a boat.

Thanks Chris. "Steve Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, has an idea on how to stop the US from losing computer software jobs to India: produce more engineers. "People focus often times on the labour rate differential. But the thing that's most troubling is the graduation rate of technical graduates," Ballmer lamented at a conference in NewYork last month. "In the US, we have fewer computer science graduates today than we did five years ago."

Jenna Bush, Spawn of Satan

Th Satannnnnn
Is it me, or is Jenna Bush holding up the sign of Satan next to her father's face in this photo? Choose picture #7 in this MSNBC slide show.
Here's the original MSNBC Link, and here's a link to a copy of the photo I saved locally (it's now offline at MSNBC) (thanks Jeremy)

Update: BB reader Charles Bestal says, "As a University of Texas student, we hear a good bit about the party animal around campus -- but it should be noted that she is most likely invoking the school's hand-sign (Hook 'em Horns, they say), rather than the devil, or her father."

The Houston Chronicle confirms that it was the University of Texas "Hook'em, Horns" but it appears to have offended some people in Norway.

Houston Chronicle
Norwa y reads something sinister in 'Hook 'em' sign

..."Sjokkhilsen fra Bush datter," read an outraged headline on Norwegian news Web site Nettavisen. Translated: "Shock greeting from Bush daughter."

...The "Hook 'em, Horns" that Bush flashed when The Eyes of Texas was played at the Black Tie and Boots gala Wednesday was misconstrued by some in Norway as a sign of the devil used by a musical scene that terrorized the country in the late 1980s and early '90s.

...Death metal's history
In Norway the horns carried a greater menace. The country has long been a hotbed of death metal, a subgenre of music with a sordid history of church burnings, murder, inadvertant bludgeonings (with sheep skulls), pet sacrifices and sundry behavior best described as anti-Christian. There the gesture has little to do with sports rivalries.

...Needless to say, Norway's more prudish contingent was aghast upon seeing the daughter of the American president flashing a sign associated with such behavior.

It could be worse ...
..."I suppose it can mean different things to different people in different parts of the world," Clark says. "I guess the Norwegians and Italians should be happy that our mascot was a longhorn and not a unicorn."

This sounds like something from a Douglas Adams book. Luckily it didn't mean anything offensive to our future Alien Overlords.

Thanks to Glenn to the Houston Chronicle link

eWeek reports on an interesting new trend: cellphone carriers asking manufacturers to start offering versions of their phones without the digital cameras built-in. Why? Because for security reasons their business customers don't want to issue their employees cellphones that can potentially snap pictures of sensitive company material and documents. Verizon has already asked Samsung to develop a camera-free version of the i700 and Sprint is talking to Handspring/palmOne/whoever about doing the same thing for the Treo 600. GLE is a library of C functions that draw extruded surfaces, including surfaces of revolution, sweeps, tubes, polycones, polycylinders and helicoids. GLE uses the OpenGL(R) API to perform the actual rendering. The new version 3.1.0 includes new varients of existing functions that allow alpha-blending (transparency) to be used. Any subroutines that used to take RGB arguments now have analogous *_c4f() versions that take RGBA (alpha) colors. A simple demo showing alpha transparency can be found in the examples/alpha.c file. Sony Ericsson A1402S II 08/03/2004 09:03 AM

au_phone.jpg imageSony Ericsson has a new phone for Japan's au cellular service, dubbed the "A1402S II." It is, as expected, the successor to the "A1402S." It's a somewhat underwhelming phone, though, so it better be cheap; prices are not yet announced. Although it does of course have the Japanese standard (no jealous; stand proud, America) QVGA (240 x 320) resolution on a 2.3-inch display, the camera is a mere 0.34MP (so take some heart in that failing). A cameraless version of the phone will also be available.

So fine, but why do they get all the pink phones? I clack my claws down each link of my chitinous sensor braids in protest.

It's not likely we'll see it over our way, but Japanese carrier has a new Sony Ericsson handset, the A1402S (perhaps that name has a little more zing in Japanese). It looks like fairly standard fare, though, so no need to shed those big crocodile tears like we normally do when Japan gets a new phone with an 80-megapixel videocamera that cleans your teeth and punches your grandma all at once. PhoneMag has a few details, such as they are. One notable thing, though, is that the A1402S comes with a pretty big selection of swappable faceplates. Not groundbreaking, but it makes for a nice picture, at least.
