The Incredible, Shrinking CPUs

The Incredible, Shrinking CPUs

The Incredible, Shrinking CPUs 10/30/2003 11:57 PM

It seems CPUs are continuing to get smaller and faster. Two new processors have been making news lately: the Transmeta Efficeon and the VIA Technologies NanoBGA Eden-N processor. The Transmeta Efficeon TM8000 will run at up to 2GHz and is just 21mm x 21mm. The new VIA CPU is about the size of a penny and consumes only 7 watts when running at 1Ghz, so it may be usable without a fan. VIA has also announced a new motherboard form factor even smaller than the Mini-ITX. They're calling it Nano-ITX and it's just 6.7cm x 6.7cm. In related news, the Hypertone E1-32 CPU, a RISC/DSP combo is now supported by uCLinux and uClibc thanks to a porting effort by the manufacturer. Let's hope this all leads to smarter robots.

ebay_small.gifThis is a bit off topic, but it's a fascinating study of what happens when Phishers get a book on Javascript.

First off, I don't specifically understand what's going on here. Ping me if you'd like to get the link and do some forensics. Essentially, you go to the typical locked-down Apache site with lots of fake Paypal material. It asks you to click another link and then you get some sort of strange mini-browser that causes your main browser to auto-supply your email and password. I stopped the script before it could do any harm, but clearly they are piggy-backing on a real site here.

The header of the mini-browser appears above. Click it to see the full screen. I wouldn't normally post these but this one was so unique and I haven't had my coffee yet. I got so freaked that I went and changed my Paypal password. I changed it to 1234.

UPDATE - Slashdot picked up the trail as did Bachelor Ben. Thanks, faceless horde!

Incredible String Band reunion tour

Incredible String Band reunion tour 08/28/2004 09:44 AM
David Pescovitz: 134Seminal UK avant-folk group the Incredible String Band is preparing to tour the US for the first time in three decades. The group melds sitars, guitars, banjos, and ouds with bluegrass, Celtic melodies, and classic 1960s psychedelia. Founding members Mike Heron are leading the band stateside. From publicist Howard Wuelfing's email list:
Many of the artists that comprise the current wave of “experimental folk” consider the Incredible String Band as a crucial inspiration and influence.  Devendra Banhart says (in typically Banhartian fashion) “Happy Birthday! not noodlemisters but Epic lizard man songs traversing the new universe holding sarods, our old hopes tightly, fiddles, chimes, udes, bagpipes, baby boars, banjos, mead, invisible ropes and on and on OH in this sweetcheese pond lies a perfect reflection of trueTRUE love! Happy Birthday Old Baby!"

Cory Doctorow: Hank sez, "Where ordinary mash-up mixes mix two or perhaps three songs, this mix is made up by appx 40 Beatles songs, with sometimes five different songs playing at the same time. A must hear!" I concur; this is mind-blowingly amazing. Man, all these Beatles mash-ups this year are really making me yearn for my old Beatles vinyl. I especially love the juxtaposition in this track of the old skiffle-Beatles with the later psychedelia. Soo-poib. 5MB MP3 Link (Thanks, Hank!)

PS: I am reasonably certain that this server will be shortly overwhelmed. If you've got a mirror, email me and I'll post a link to it. However, I have no such mirror, so if you find yourself unable to get a copy, don't look at me!

Update 1: Ian Clarke, the co-author of the awesome P2P tool Freenet, has graciously offered to distribute this file through Dijjer, his new (still pre-beta) P2P content distribution tool; here's the Dijjer Link

Update 2: Brian Arnold offers this more conventional mirror

Update 3: David Chin was good enough to make and seed this Torrent for the file (though I have my doubts about BitTorrent's efficacy with a file of a paltry five megabytes)

Shrinking Antennas

Shrinking Antennas 06/09/2004 11:57 PM
Sometimes you need someone who isn't an expert in a field to come up with a breakthrough in the technology. A technician in a university lab realized that he couldn't keep up his ham radio hobby at his girlfriend's (now wife's) house, because the antenna he needed was too big. So, he began messing around with different ideas on new antenna design - admitting that he basically knew nothing whatsoever about antennas. After trying a number of different experiments over the years, he eventually zeroed in on one possible solution, and believes he's created an antenna system that shrinks the antenna size without losing its efficiency. While some are still skeptical, and much more testing needs to be done, this might be yet another case of an "amateur" inventor forced to come up with something new out of necessity.

It is not often that a company boss gets to bathe in the success of a product that is a smash hit with consumers. It is rarer still for that product to be genuinely important, transforming not just the company that designed it, but the face of an industry. It is even more remarkable for one chief executive to enjoy this level of success, not at one company, but at two quite different businesses in the same year. And to accomplish all this while undergoing treatment for cancer -- well, that's just incredible. By Paul Durman, The Times

Telecom Competition Shrinking

Telecom Competition Shrinking 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
The Federal Communications Commission claims it's going to really, really look hard at the Sprint-Nextel merger. Oh, sure. This is the same FCC that's rubber-stamping the regional phone monopolies' competition-stifling moves in local phone service, the same FCC that's letting cable and phone broadband providers keep out alternative ISPs. There's all kinds of interesting action at the edges these days, in the wireless-data space for the most part. But the incumbent powers are doing everything that such companies do when they see a threat. They're merging up a storm and working to keep competition out of traditional markets. And the government that's supposed to encourage competition is doing everything but officially bless the competition-shrinking trends. Not good.

Shrinking Tretrahedral Walkers go to
Mars
03/30/2005 02:51 PM
Proving once again that R. Buckminster Fuller's fascination with tetrahedrons wasn't as eccentric as it seemed, Roland Piquepaille writes, "NASA is testing a shape-shifting robot called TETwalker for tetrahedral walker, because it looks like a flexible pyramid. It has been tested in the lab and at the McMurdo station in Antarctica to test it under conditions more like those on Mars. Now, it is on the way to be -- really -- miniaturized by using micro- and nano-electro-mechanical systems. These robots will eventually join together to form autonomous nanotechnology swarms (ANTS). When it's done, in about thirty years, these nanotech swarms will "alter their shape to flow over rocky terrain or to create useful structures like communications antennae and solar sails." So in 2034, nanotechnology will land on Mars." For more details on the TETwalker and ANTS project see Roland's blog.

For all the talk about the "digital divide" and how poorer kids weren't getting access to the internet that would be important to their ability to get jobs in the future, it looks like much of the problem is going away. Nearly all children in the US now have some form of internet access, though, there still are differences in how they access it. It shouldn't be much of a surprise to find out that wealthier families are more likely to have internet access at home for their kids. Either way, this is clearly a positive step.

QuickTopic: Free Bulletin Boards (Message Boards) and Collaborative Document Review Groupware
http://www.quicktopic.com/

There's a major gap in collaboration tools between plain old email and more complex, long-term solutions like multi-threaded web bulletin boards or mailing lists, and QuickTopic fills that gap. For any substantial group discussion, email is cumbersome. A conversation thread is scattered among email in-boxes, and there's no central respository to capture it. Heavyweight collaboration systems require complex setup and registration and/or learning by participants. QuickTopic fills the gap by providing a super-easy single-topic web forum that's also fully email-enabled. You can start a topic in ten seconds, and participants can use just email to participate, or they can use the web board, or both as the need arises. It's like an instant mailing list with a web-based archive, or it's like an easy web forum that works seamlessly with email. Each topic also has its own RSS feed, accessible by simply appending ".rss" to the topic's URL! This has been added to the tool section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

nikon_5900rev.jpgThe Nikon Coolpix 5900 is a step towards the consumer camera of the future. It doesn't offer a lot of finesse, like manual exposure control over aperture and shutter speeds, but it does offer things like 'Face-Priority AF,' (automatic focus on human faces) and D-Lighting (automatic contrast correction). Now they don't always work—the Face-Priority in particular has some problems picking the right face on which to focus—but when they do they can make taking high-quality pictures much easier for people that don't know what they're doing. That said, if you're already a photography champ, the $350 Nikon 5900 is only going to get in your way.

Photography Blog has a typically in-depth review with sample images and more.

Transmeta to Shut Down?

Transmeta to Shut Down? 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Transmeta sells microprocessor unit: Apparently Transmeta — well known as the landing place of Linus Torvalds — is going to shut down. They just sold the Crusoe line of processors to a Hong Kong company.

The deal marks the latest twist in the Transmeta melodrama. The Sunnyvale, California-based company, which counted Linus Torvalds as an early employee, hoped to challenge Intel in notebooks with processors that consumed far less power. Despite signing deals with brand-name manufacturers such as Sony and Fujitsu in 2000, tepid performance reviews and product delays followed in 2001.

Deals dried up, three CEOs came and went, and financial losses increased. Since 1998, the company has posted accumulated losses of $635 million on revenues of $134 million.

Transmeta's early successes, however, did have a lasting effect: They prompted Intel to come up with the Centrino processor, chipset and network-interface bundle.

I remember when this company launched amid total secrecy. They wouldn't tell anyone what they were doing or working on. When they hired Linus, everyone went atwitter about what they were up to. Sad to see it end this way.

I've been frustrated in finding and building forums in the past because you have to have thousands of interested people who regularly read and post to build a rich knowledge base.
