Who wouldn't vote for free beer?

Who wouldn't vote for free beer? 06/18/2004 08:09 AM
Regis ter to vote and you can get free beer! What better way to reach that vast pool of unregistered twenty-one year-olds than offering them something they actually want? Brought to you by the Democrats, of course. But not without some controversy (from health experts, not Republicans), even though they only get two 2-ounce glasses.

Any other examples of inventive voter registration drives out there?

JoeUser: Whining from the Free Beer Crowd JoeUser has some good comments on those "open source advocates" that always want "something for nothing" i.e. that free software is somehow morally superior to commercial software. I don't think I've ever taken that position. I don't see anything morally superior about Open Source -- to me Open Source is very much about a more open engineering process that leads to better software. Like Open Source or not -- the types of software it produces, while not perfect, tend to be of greater quality -- results may vary, and as with commercial software, Open Source can produce crappy stuff. But when it works the results are outstanding (Apache, Mozilla, SendMail, Linux, BSD, PHP). [_Go_]

A US software company that gives its workers free beer on Friday afternoons has been named the "Best Small Company to Work for in America".

Analytical Graphics, Inc (AGI) also gives workers access to a free laundry service, free meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - all week and access to free snacks, confectionary and drinks. And if there are concerns that all this free nosh might pile on the pounds, there's also a gym. Which is free.

In fact, AGI spends around $1m a year on freebies and perks for staff, according to the Detroit Free Press. As a result, workers are more productive, motivated and enjoy coming to work - while the company saves buckets loads of dosh in recruitment and training.

The Philadelphia, PA, company, which provides geospatial analysis and visualisation software to the aerospace and defence industries, topped the list of the "Best Small Company to Work for in America" award among the "Best Small Companies" category.

"From March 3—June 17, 2005, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents Sue de Beer: Black Sun. Black Sun, a new two-channel video installation viewed within a large-scale wooden house environment, furthers de Beer’s exploration of the construction of feminine desire and unfulfilled longing." + "Sue de Beer’s art is a mature reflection on the complex interior lives of disaffected suburban American teenagers. Her video installations, photographs, and sculptures are littered with references to the pop culture detritus central to our adolescent search for identity." + "By using the computer and constructing sets to contain the action, de Beer’s enigmatic images make any fiction appear as reality."

The Beer Pool

The Beer Pool 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

3062391-Bierschwimmbad__2,p.jpgMore news from the Tirols—the Beer Pool! In a story entitled "Das erste Bier-Schwimmbad der Welt," which we assume translates to "Please Don't Pee In Our Beer Pool," it appears that the city of Tarrenz now has a pool filled with sweet, sweet liquid bread. But don't try drinking from the beer pool directly—according to this Babelfished translation, you don't swim in a cool, crisp lager but in filtered, yeasty wort. Yum! (Thanks, Dennis)

Everyone [We're assuming this means every tank - Ed] is filled with approximately 20,000 litres barley juice. However the beer does not flow by any means freshtapped from the cock. The original fermenting tanks made of high-grade steel are filled with the so-called Biergelaeger, the remainder yeast, which sets off when brewing in the beer tank.

Beer Circles

Beer Circles 09/26/2004 05:36 AM

Drinking on the rails.

« If only all the Helsinki city trams featured a bar, curtains, a loo and inlaid wooden benches like Spårakoff. »

Every big city has some attraction that the locals eschew as a tourist trap and, if I had to think of one for Helsinki, Spårakoff would likely be it. Boston has the duck tours but Spårakoff doesn't feature an annoyingly perky tour guide spewing useless trivia about Helsinki that you won't remember as you whiz by at 50mph while wishing that you had a beer. No, Spårakoff rolls quietly around the city in a loop [~160kb map] while you look out the window and enjoy a beer or two along with the scenery. The tram only runs from May through August which seems wrong since the times you'd want to ride on a cozy tram drinking beer would likely be more during the cold and dark months rather than the warm and sunny months, but unsurprisingly tourists don't flock to Helsinki during the dark times. There's very little mention of the tram on the net in English and so I suppose that it's something the natives want to ride on but only do when they have a visitor to take along as an excuse for being such a tourist. :)

I had always wanted to take a ride on it since first seeing the red tram, but it's not really something you make time for when you live here, ride the regular trams, have seen the sights and don't feel like parting with 7€ for admission and 5€ for a beer just for a 40-60 minute ride around town. A short ferry ride to Tallinn, a few cases of Koff, and back costs only a few euros more. It's a beautiful old tram appointed with a bar, polished wood seats, carpet and velvet curtains which gives the air of being both modern and vintage at the same time. The tables even have built-in cup holders to keep spillage down to a minimum. The tram was originally built in 1959 for Helsinki City Transport, who still operate the tram, and it has been a pub tram serving Koff beer and cider since 1995. The brochure mentions that it has a capacity for 24 people sitting, 6 people standing and, 1 seat in the WC. :) Koff still delivers kegs of beer to local pubs via a wagon pulled by draft horses driven by 2 gentlemen, too, so I think they have a penchant for nostalgia.

No 'dead babies' in my beer? Oh my...

No 'dead babies' in my beer? Oh my... 04/14/2005 01:59 PM
In a surprise move, Anh euser-Busch has gone up against some of the biotech firms that would like to grow genetically-modified (GM) rice containing human DNA. The biotech firm that grows it says that their rice contains synthetic human genes which the company hopes to harvest and refine for use in medicines to fight diarrhea and dehydration.

Anheuser-Busch's concerns are not with the science of biotech, but rather the risk of crop-contamination, as has happened with farmers not only in the U.S. and Ca nada, but all over the world. The USDA has issued rice-tweakers Ventria Bioscience and 300 other biopharmers permission to plant various augmented plants around the country since 1995, but Anheuser-Busch is the first large corporation to threaten a boycott - unusual, because poultry and beef stock (PDF) are fed this kind of thing every day, and have been for the past 20 years. I guess the Budweiser brewers just don't want to see 'dead people' in their suds...

On the flip-side of this occurrence, the response of the anti-stem cell activists has been nothing short of sensory-deprivation. Shouldn't six-packs, cornfields and Porky be given the same human rights as the unborn?
