eBay confuses free software and piracy

eBay confuses free software and piracy 12/15/2003 10:25 AM
I give eBay credit for trying to do the right thing. In 1999, James Love documented on the Consumer Project for Technology mailing list how Microsoft was forcing eBay to remove items from auction if they bore the Microsoft name. According to Microsoft, consumers have no right to sell Microsoft software that they have legally purchased. eBay responded by pulling all auctions for Windows and warning those who had tried to sell it of the legal consequences of software piracy. But this is different. They are pulling auctions for free software. It's because of their "piracy policy." At least that's what they're telling Russ Phillips.

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay

Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AM
Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

eBay: Not For Everyone

eBay: Not For Everyone 08/27/2004 03:36 PM
For as big a group of users as eBay has, still there are plenty of people who would just rather buy products at a fixed price. Of course, eBay does now have the "Buy it now" feature that solves exactly that issue, but that seems like a footnote to how eBay is supposed to work. The writer here notes that the whole eBay auction takes too much time. If she wants to buy something, she just wants to buy it. She doesn't want to bid. She doesn't want to check the auction, and she doesn't want to wait a few days to find out if she got the product. For the most part, I've had a similar experience. While I have bought two or three things off of eBay, overall, I've found better prices, reliability and service just by buying at fixed price stores (including eBay's fixed price division Half.com).

Free alternative to Skype?

Free alternative to Skype? 06/05/2005 11:13 PM
In the comunications arena, positive network externalities, or "network effects" are very important. The more people use something, the more valuable it is. The free software comunity is well positioned in standards based VOIP markets (or so it would seem to this observer from afar), but Skype seems to be taking off very quickly for the single user market, because it is so easy to install and use. Are there viable free alternatives?

Sun selling big on eBay

Sun selling big on eBay 08/04/2004 09:57 AM
Selling expensive items of hardware are no rarity on eBay; planes, homes, cars, all are items that get traded on the the popular auction site. However, Sun Microsystems are taking their eBay partnership to a new hight.

"Sun is aggressively engaging with ... alternate markets, such as eBay, to generate new sales models where customers set the price," said John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun's Network Systems Group. "The success of recent eBay auctions has exceeded expectations. Sun provides support for its highly scalable and reliable Solaris OS, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE Linux, with servers and workstations certified for Microsoft Windows -- the broadest operating system support in the industry."

If you are interested in getting some Sun gear on the cheap, check out the Sun site on eBay below.

eBay my ride

eBay my ride 06/05/2005 10:50 PM

It's not entirely surprising to see cars from the show Pimp My Ride being sold on eBay for cash. I think this newest one makes it five or six of the featured cars that have been sold.

The show's premise is kind of flimsy: kids in SoCal in rough situations get a crazy $30k car makeover that is supposed to change their life for the better. Speaking as someone that once owned a highly customized car in Southern California, they're more trouble than they're worth, making you constantly worried about them getting stolen or broken into.

When you hear about the kids on the show, it's most often money problems, and having a playstation in your dash doesn't quite solve that, though they frequently point to improving these kids' self-esteem as some sort of benefit making the show worth it. So many end up on eBay, which will probably help these people out, so I guess the ends justify the means and we get some entertaining television out of it.
