Here're my running notes from El izabeth Lawley's Breaking Into the Boys' Club: How Diversifying Your Team Can Expand Your Market at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.
RIT is struggling with enrolment, but the enrolment is overwhelmingly male. Why not bring in more women? It's an untapped field and it makes men happier.

People say that women don't want want to be there, why are your forcing them to go? But this is what people said about math 30 years ago.

Today there's gender parity in math classes, but subtle pressures steered them away.

We design products for men -- women get killed by airbags. If you include women in the devleopment of product, you diversify the view. Women aren't the only viewpoint you need to include, but it's half the potential market.

Anil Dash: It's no coincidence that the two popular blogging packages (Blogger and MT) were co-developmed by women (Meg Hourihan and Mena Trott).

Silently Deleting Profanity From The
Airwaves

Silently Deleting Profanity From The
Airwaves
04/26/2004 02:38 PM
Three years ago, a TV station in Pittsburgh got in trouble for using a technology to secretly cut out seconds from a football game in order to squeeze in extra commercials. They were using some technology that could squeeze out seconds here and there from the broadcast to compress the overall time needed to actually broadcast the game. Now, with the rise of the "crackdown" on broadcast profanity, radio stations are looking to use similar equipment to secretly block out profanity. The system lets radio broadcasters send out their signal with a regular time delay, as most stations already do. Rather than just bleeping out profanity, however, the system is designed to make it simply disappear and compress the show so that no listeners even know it's happening. Each time this happens, of course, the amount of delay decreases - so the box systematically adds back in additional seconds, sneaking in extra pauses that didn't really happen. Of course, as the article points out, most boxes are designed with a 20 second delay, which does no good if someone curses continuously for 20 seconds. Howard Stern, for instance, needs to string together a few of these boxes to make them work on his show.

New Beastie Boys

New Beastie Boys 06/14/2004 04:08 PM

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, a couple weeks ago I got a copy of To The 5 Boroughs, the new Beastie Boys album. It's not much of a growth for them, sounding a lot like their previous record Hello Nasty. Most of the songs are somewhat forgettable, but MCA gets props for the following rhyme in It Takes Time to Build:

We got a president we didn't elect,
The Kyoto Treaty he decided to neglect...

I never thought environmental treaties would make it into mainstream hip-hop songs, but the Beasties proved me wrong.

Caveat Lector: Beastie Boys Evil

"It seems that Capitol Records has some sort of new copy protection system, that automatically, silently, installs 'helpful' copy protection software on MacOS and Windows as soon as you insert the CD into default systems. I’m not sure exactly what it does yet, but I am sure regreting actually purchasing said media now… they don’t deserve my money if they choose to pull stupid stunts like this. Installing software without your permission sounds like viral malware behaviour to me. I certainly hope the AV companies put signatures into their products for this crap." [Security Focus, via Furdlog]

Noted for when patrons complain that the CD they checked out from your library messed up their computer. Yeah, this is definitely the way for the music industry to win back already angry customers.

AP - The members of Beastie Boys are flashing liquor and cash while betting on a street-level parlor game — with a Jewish twist. Instead of a 40-ounce brew, Adrock throttles a bottle of Manischewitz wine. In lieu of dice, MCA tosses a dreidel as Mike D hangs back with a gold Kiddush cup. Moments later, MCA, the band's self-styled Kung Fu master, chops through a thick stack of matzo bread like Bruce Lee busting through three-ply mahogany.
