Iraq, with all its problems, might as well be another country.

08/02/2004 03:02 AMEFF has taken things one step further with JibJab and their endangered
political parody of This Land is Your Land (Woody Guthrie's copyright
holder has threatened to sue them for their work).
We're bringing the fight to Guthrie's rightsholders, and suing on
JibJab's behalf, "to defend JibJab's fair use and free speech rights."

07/29/2004 06:53 AMI'm proud to relate that EFF is representing Jib Jab, the creators of
the wonderful "This Land is Your Land"
Flash parody that aroused
the ire of the holder of Woody Guthrie's copyrights and resulted in a
threatened
lawuit. Here's a little bit of my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann's
letter to the copyright-holder's lawyers.
In your July 23 letter, you contend that "This Land" offers no
"satirical comment" on the Guthrie original. You are mistaken.
While your view of Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" as being
predominantly about "the beauty of the American landscape" and "the
disenfranchisement of the underclass" is interesting, most Americans
think of the song as an iconic expression of the ideal of national
unity. Jib Jab's parody addresses, among other things, the lack of
national unity that characterizes our current political climate
(ending with the optimistic hope that unity might be rediscovered). In
short, "This Land" explores exactly the same themes as the Guthrie
original, using the parodic device of contrast and juxtaposition to
comment on the original. See Abilene Music v. Sony Music
Entertainment, 320 F .Supp.2d 84, 90-91 (S.D.N.Y. 2003) (emphasizing
the role of contrast and juxtaposition as parodic devices). The
parodic comment takes on an additional dimension of irony when viewed
in light of the often omitted closing stanzas of Guthrie's original.

Evidence that Python is advancing into
the enterprise
03/29/2005 03:14 PMWASHINGTON, D.C. -- So what was the bottom line from the PyCON 2005
conference, held here last week? Python is an open-source technology
whose use in enterprise IT operations will only grow for the
foreseeable future. Mission-critical development organizations often
regard only a handful of languages -- C#, Java, XML, SQL, and few
others -- as safe enough for serious projects. From this perspective,
Python has been traditionally lumped with "experimental" or "toy"
languages. Over and over, however, speakers at this conference
presented evidence to the contrary.

Urban farmers reclaim Detroit
Urban farmers reclaim Detroit
12/11/2003 09:39 AMIn Detroit, urban farmers, frustrated with buying their groceries at
Party Stores now that the grocery chains have largely pulled out of
the city, have begun to reclaim Detroit's vast empty spaces for
grow-your-own operations, complete with livestock and tractors.
After decades of blight, large swathes of Detroit are being reclaimed
by nature. Roughly a third of this 139-square-mile city consists of
weed-choked lots and dilapidated buildings. Satellite images show an
urban core giving way to an urban prairie.
Rather than fight this return to nature, Mr. Weertz and other urban
farmers have embraced it, gradually converting 15 acres of idle land
into more than 40 community gardens and microfarms — some consuming
entire blocks.

Abstract:
Early contributions to the academic
literature on free/libre and open source software (F/LOSS) movements
have been directed primarily at identifying the motivations that
account for the sustained and often intensive involvement of many
people in this non-contractual and unremunerated productive activity.
This issue has been particularly prominent in economists'
contributions to the literature, and it reflects a view that
widespread voluntary participation in the creation of economically
valuable goods that is to be distributed without charge constitutes a
significant behavioral anomaly. Undoubtedly, the motivations of F/LOSS
developers deserve to be studied more intensively, but not because
their behaviors are unique, or historically unprecedented. In this
essay we argue that other aspects of the "open source" phenomenon are
just as intriguing, if not more so, and possibly are also more
consequential topics for economic analysis. We describe the
re-focusing and re-direction of empirical and theoretical research in
an integrated international project (based at Stanford
University/SIEPR) that aims at better understanding a set of less
widely discussed topics: the modes of organization, governance and
performance of F/LOSS development -- viewed as a collective
distributed mode of production.. We discuss of the significance of
tackling those questions in order to assess the potentialities of the
"open source way of working" as a paradigm for a broader class of
knowledge and information-goods production, and conclude with
proposals for the trajectory of future research along that line.

elements of the outside.

Kurds are the
Closest Relatives of Jews Funny, They don't look
Jewish:"Research has just begun into the ancient ties between
Kurds and Jews. It would be interesting to see if the various Jewish
groups have as strong a family tie to Kurds in the maternal lineages
as they do in the paternal lineages. Preliminary studies indicate that
Jewish populations in eastern Europe and Yemen have maternal origins
that contain much more non-Israelite ancestry than their paternal
origins. Despite this admixture with other groups, the Jewish Judean
people ultimately began their existence in an area within or nearby
Kurdistan, prior to migrating southwest to Israel. This exciting
research showing that Kurds and Jews may have shared common fathers
several millennia ago should, hopefully, encourage both Kurds and Jews
to explore each others' cultures and to maintain the friendship that
Kurds and Jews enjoyed in northern Iraq in recent times (as chronicled
in Michael Rubin's recent article "The Other Iraq"). As
Rubin indicates, the Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani once
visited Israel and met with Israeli government officials. Rubin refers
to the Iraqi Kurds' "special affinity for Israel" and writes
that "In the safe haven of Iraqi Kurdistan, the Jews and Israel
are remembered fondly, if increasingly vaguely." Let us hope that
this relationship can be renewed and strengthened."
