Google Back To Suing Froogles

Google Back To Suing Froogles 04/18/2005 06:48 PM
It seems that Google's trademark lawyers are busy these days. Last year, they were sued by the creators of some children's toys/books called the Googles and that was quickly followed up by a dispute with the guy who ran a shopp ing search engine at Froogles.com, which Google obviously felt competed with their own Froogle.com. The big problem, though, was that Froogles had been around longer than Froogle (whoops!) leading to an arbitration panel letting the guy keep his domain. Google tried to defend their position by noting that Froogles was confusingly similar to Google (not Froogle). This way, they could make the claim that Google had been around longer than Froogles. However, what the arbitration panel doesn't give, perhaps the courts will. An unofficial Google blog is noting that Google has reopened the case -- probably after the guy refused to settle and was holding out for a bigger offer. Once again, though, Google is focusing on the earlier claim that Froogles infringes on Google -- and they go so far as to state that any use of "OOGLE" in relation to search may be considered infringement -- which might be a pretty credible claim. It seems unlikely a company would use "oogle" without there being some confusion with Google.

The Hidden "Ads by Google" - Back in
Black
11/04/2003 02:28 PM
For the past several weeks, publishers were able to hide the "Ads by Google" link by using a light colored border. This would make the ads appear like a part of the site itself, rather than ads provided by Google, particularly when the border and background matched the website's page color. Many reported a much higher CTR when doing this.

Google News Watching My Back 01/22/2004 02:42 AM
Sometime last year I setup a Google News Alert for my name. Why? Because I can't read every damned thing that gets published and I'd like to know when my name appears in the press--for good or bad. And I'd like to know before someone else asks me about it. As the screenshot at the right shows, there are currently three matches. This is a milestone of sorts, I guess. The first one is from Jon Udell's latest Infoworld...

Genetic Responsibility

Genetic Responsibility 05/05/2004 08:26 AM
Somewhere in the royal forests of Jaktorów, 1627 AD. Hidden deep in the primeval forest of what will become modern-day Poland, a poacher notches an arrow to the string of his bow. In an open glade, preserved for the exclusive hunting of the king, an animal that exists nowhere else in the world grazes. Her ancestors are preserved in ochre paints on the cave walls of Lascaux. Relatives to her bloodline will become the black fighting bulls of Spain, but they will be pale shadows compared to her. Standing more than six feet high at the shoulder, the aurochs' horns are massive scimitars of bone, spreading more than an arms span from her broad triangular head. She is ten feet from nose to tail, tons of muscle and flesh that are impossible to stop once she has begun her terrifying charge. The wood of the bow creaks as the poacher draws the arrow. The aurochs looks up curiously. The arrow flies free. The aurochs bellows with pain and range as the shaft sinks into her body, spearing her heart. Bloody froth drips from her mouth as her head rears back - and then the massive animal falls, the collapse of her body echoing through the forest. The leaves shake for a moment. The aurochs chest falls as she draws a shuddering breath. And then she dies. She is the last of her kind.
