Mobile Alliance Lines Up Copy Protection
Patents

Mobile Alliance Lines Up Copy Protection
Patents
01/06/2005 06:52 AM
The Open Mobile Alliance, which has been working feverishly on a copy protection standard for mobile phones has announced that they've gotten past one major hurdle: getting all the various patent holders to pool the patents. What this means is that this standard is likely to move forward on mobile phones, as it has pretty widespread industry support. Of course, that doesn't mean it's really good for anyone. While some say that this copy protection will make companies more comfortable releasing content, that's a total red herring. If there's demand for the content, it'll find it's way to the device. Copy protection won't actually "protect" any content. It will still get out there. However, it will make life more difficult for legitimate purchasers of content who will be annoyed to find they can't do what they want with the content. If anything, all this announcement really means is that we'll all be paying more, because everyone is going to have to pay royalties for these newly pooled patents. So, let's see... the content isn't actually protected and still gets copied for unauthorized users, consumers have fewer rights to do what the want to do with the content they actually acquired legitimately, and everything costs more. Sounds useful.

Verizon Launches SCH-i730 with Wi-Fi

Verizon Launches SCH-i730 with Wi-Fi 06/24/2005 04:02 PM

vwsi730.jpgUh oh. I didn't know this was possible: Verizon has released a phone I want. The Samsung SCH-i730 is a WIndows Mobile device that has not only an EV-DO radio (I love me some EV-DO) but also Wi-Fi, which many thought Verizon would remove for fear they might not squeeze every last testicle dollar from their subscribers. It's $600 and only available to business customers at the moment, but it's lovely.

I've already got Verizon for EV-DO service with the PCMCIA card. I wonder if they'd let me add the phone service on, too? I might just have to see.

Verizon Gets PalmOne Treo 600 07/08/2004 07:20 AM

treo_verizon.jpg imageVerizon Wireless is finally getting the PalmOne Treo 600, according to SlashPhone, in both 'with camera' and cameraless versions. Although the specific launch date hasn't been announced yet (it should be within the next few days), the stated plan is to launch the Treo along with the re-launch of their Wireless Sync service. National Retail Price will be $450 with a two-year service contract, or $500 with a one-year. So this probably means the Treo Ace is about to launch on Sprint or T-Mobile, right?
