03/14/2005 06:04 PM

Computer pioneer Jef Raskin , who launched the Apple Macintosh , passed away this week. He was sixty-two:

Jef created the Macintosh Computer as employee number 31 at Apple in the early 1980s, revolutionizing computer interface design. Jef established many methods now taken for granted by computer users, such as "click and drag." He named the Macintosh project after his favorite variety of apple, the McIntosh (modifying the spelling for copyright purposes). Jef strongly believed that computers should make tasks easy for people, not the other way around.

In the best decision out of Motorola in years — now that Chris Galvin has resigned — the Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector will be spun off into its own independent corporation. After years of mismanagement and dwindling mindshare, setting SPS free could spark the rebirth of the sleepy chipzilla, but sadly for Apple and Mac users the move has come too late to benefit Macintosh.

299_rgb.jpg imageThe semiconducter industry is taking it in the crotch when it comes to cellphones, continually racing to cram more and more features into handsets that oftentimes don't sell for as much as they cost to make -- at least according to the EE Times, but hey, they would know, right? Still, there seems to be a little sky-is-fallingism in the article, because while the coming convergence of portable devices (MP3 players, phones, cameras, PDAS, etc.) may cause fewer items to sell (with fewer profit margins), it should continue to push the need for more and more semiconducters and flash memory products as people continue to upgrade to newer, more converged devices.

The gadgets may change, but the lust for new gadgets seems to stay the same. Then again, I'm an idiot, so weigh those two things together.

James Madison Papers
http:// memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/madison_papers/

The Library of Congress announced the release of the James Madison Papers, now available on the Library's American Memory Web at the above link. The James Madison Papers from the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress consist of approximately 12,000 items captured in some 72,000 digital images. They document the life of the man who came to be known as the "Father of the Constitution" through correspondence, personal notes, drafts of letters and legislation, an autobiography, legal and financial documents, and miscellaneous manuscripts. The collection is organized into six series dating from 1723 to 1836. Beginning with a selection of his father's letters, the series moves through Madison's years as a student, and as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and include extensive notes of the debates during his three-year term in the Continental Congress (1779-82). Notes and a memoranda document Madison's pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the Virginia ratification convention of 1788. Other materials reflect the nine years that Madison spent in the House of Representatives and his tenure as Secretary of State during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Correspondence and notes trace his two terms as the fourth president of the United States, illuminating the origins and course of the War of 1812 and the post-war years of his presidency and subsequent retirement. The collection also includes a complete copy of Thomas Jefferson's notes from the Continental Congress of 1776. Notable correspondents include Dolley Payne Madison, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Edmund Randolph, Noah Webster, and Secretary of War James Armstrong, whose correspondence with Madison fills an entire series. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

New obsession: the work of a war photographer named James Nachtwey, who was injured earlier this month in Iraq. At left: "Iraqi soldiers search for what they thought was a downed American pilot along the banks of the Tigris River. No pilot was found, and the U.S. denied that any aviator had been lost over Baghdad." T his is a link to his work this Spring in Iraq, and rumor has it there's more work from Iraq coming from him soon. This book of his work released a few years ago is fantastic. There's an update about his condition online here. (thanks Invi sible Cowgirl)
