Belated Apology

Belated Apology

Belated Apology 06/18/2004 11:58 PM

Dave wr ote:

What really gets to me is how people who say they're my friend, stand by, and say nothing.

Oops.  Sorry, Dave.  When read about your shutting down of weblogs.com, I thought it didn't seem like something you would do without a good reason.  So I went and listened to your MP3 chat.  You did have a good reason which was that you tried to do the good thing but things got complicated and there weren't many options to choose from.  While it's easy to think there must have been better alternatives, it's just not the same as being the man on the spot.

Why didn't I say anything when the hounds were at your heels?  I thought you would just take it all in stride.  After all, you must have expected the hounds would come after you.  Would the hounds listen to opinions contrary to their smell of blood?  I didn't think so.  I thought they would just look foolish afterward since they chose to misinterpret what you said and misunderstand your motives.

Inside me is a scared kid as well but I have been all right ever since I accepted death as a side door with a glowing Exit sign over it instead of a gate to hell and eternal pain.  My apology is for not seeing that you might think differently and that you might misinterpret silence as a sign of abandonment.  I will speak up next time.

A belated Merry Christmas

A belated Merry Christmas 12/29/2003 09:47 AM

I'm back to work after enjoying that most precious of things: a holiday without computers. Comment spam has been deleted, email spam has been saved in a special folder (for rapid training of bayesian classifiers in the future) and the few emails of actual importance have all been flagged for follow up. Oh, and my Mac's shipping date has slipped to the 32nd of January. If haven't received it by Macworld and Apple drop the price I'll be understandably upset.

Red Mars: a very belated appreciation

Red Mars: a very belated appreciation 05/28/2004 10:58 AM
I'm pretty well-read in the modern sf canon, but there are some gaps in there that are almost embarrassing in scope. Take Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars. This doorstopper, clocking in at nearly 800 pages, is the first volume in a trilogy of comparably-sized companion volumes, each of which depicts a different vision of the [dis|u]topiian establishment of a permanent human settlement on Mars. When Red Mars first came out, I was working at Bakka Books, the science fiction bookstore in Toronto, and there was something else in my queue that month, and one of my co-workers had already dived into it and was writing the shelf review, and it seemed like such a commitment that, well, I just never got around to it. With the publication of Green Mars and Blue Mars, it just got worse: if I couldn't clear enough schedule to read volume one, volumes two and three were impossible.

It wasn't that I didn't like Robinson's books. Quite the contrary, I adore them. Pacific Edge -- a gripping, rollicking utopian novel whose plot hinges on a zoning debate over the placement of a baseball diamond -- is one of my all-time favorite books. When Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom came out and the reviewers compared it to John Varley for the technology stuff, I was honoured, but the few reviews that compared it to Pacific Edge sent me over the moon: if Robinson could disrupt his utopia with a zoning fight and make it into a gripping tale, could I do the same with a fight over the politics of Disney ride fandom and design?

Like Red Mars, Pacific Edge is volume one in a trilogy that approaches utopia from three different angles. I haven't read the other two books in the trilogy, and that's a keen regret that I intend to do something about post-haste.

Because now I've finally read Red Mars, and I am agog at what may be the finest sf novel I've ever read. Red Mars has all the hard-sf window-dressing that many of us imagine when we think of sf: great and accessible tours through speculative cog sci, geology, astronomy, rocketry, physics, biology, genetics, and so on, until the head swims with the sheer scope of the research task Robinson set himself in this book.

But the hard science is just the skin, and the meat of this book -- as with Pacific Edge -- is the "soft" science: the complex play of the community of his vast cast of characters as they set out to advance their competing agendas, writing the future of Mars.

Robinson doesn't just shine here: he glows. There is this hard question at the core of every story of violent social upheaval, which is, how does collective action materialize? How is it steered? How does it go off the rails? How, in short, does stuff get done? Can a speech change the world? Can a bomb? Who gets to construct the consensus reality, and how do you disrupt it?

This is the stuff of Robinson's books: big, social questions answered through skilful point-of-view switches, fantastic characterization and fearless exposition.

In the beginning, a lot of sf was just technocrat fantasy: here's a cool new technology I've thought of, with a minimal narrative around it as a kind of turntable so that it can be rotated 360' and you, the reader, can appreciate its cleverness from all sides.

Later, sf writers took on the more ambitious challenge of predicting the social upheaval that tech could create, an approach embodied in the cliche that "the job of the sf writer is to consider the car and the movie-palace and invent the drive-in."

But Robinson goes many steps beyond this: he extrapolates the drive-in, then the sexual revolution, then the Boomers' nostalgia for the drive-in where they lost their virginity, and finally, their grown childrens' disdain for that nostalgia. There's an eerie prescience to these books that tells you that what's being written here is a deep and broad tale of social reconstruction on the micro, macro, nano and mezzoscales.

I just finished Red Mars on a BA flight from Vienna, and I was bitterly disappointed not to find Blue and Green Marses on sale at Heathrow, but I'll have them in my possession by dusk. I can't wait to read them. Link

It turns out that the Javascript on PHP.net mentioned previously was not deliberately obfuscated to protect the code from prying eyes; it was merely compressed to reduce the size of the script. See this comment for further details. I'd like to apologise to the maintainers of PHP.net for jumping the gun on this issue. Incidentally, the unobfuscated code is now available in CVS.

An Apology

An Apology 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

As you might have noted, my personality has a sharp edge that occasionally surfaces.  Sometimes I try to hide them with humor but that edgyness can be tiring.  If it's tiring to me, it's must be tiring you too.  So I would like to apologize and hope my other sides can make up for some of that.

The good news is that I am getting better.  No less than five years ago, I used to have a deep angry ridge between my eyebrowse.  Now it's not there any more, leaving just the extensive network of laughing lines around my eyes.  Hopefully, my face will resemble the Laughing Buddha by the time I croak.  Yes, I am working on the bountiful potbelly too.

Apology to my readers

Apology to my readers 07/02/2004 03:08 AM

Over the past 2 1/2 weeks while I have been recovering from my injuries/surgery I have been on heavy pain medications and today while reading back thru some of my articles I got to thinking that you all must think I have been drinking while witting.

I think the pain meds would qualify me for being slightly impaired and if you have been scratching your head that may explain some of it. My doctor and I have re-worked my pain meds and hopefully the new prescription I pick up tomorrow will allow me to navigate better and make more comprehensive sense.

A post/pre-emptive apology... 10/29/2003 12:10 AM

I'm hoping to really plough through a lot of ideas in the back of my head this weekend, so please forgive me if they're not as clear and well-formed as they might otherwise be. All responses gratefully received, all comments appreciated, and I'll do my best to fix any errors and typos that will inevitably litter everything I write today as I try to throw things out of my head onto the web where they're both more useful and easier to keep track of. Again - apologies for the incoherent bits and the scrabbling for meaning - I'll try to do better next time...

A Canadian apology to Americans 03/15/2003 11:03 AM
From the Canadian comedy show "This Hour Has 22 Minutes," an hilarious apology on behalf of Canadians to our US neighbors.
I'm sorry about our softwood lumber. Just because we have more trees than you doesn't give us the right to sell you lumber that's cheaper and better than your own.

I'm sorry we beat you in Olympic hockey. In our defense I guess our excuse would be that our team was much, much, much, much better than yours.

I'm sorry we burnt down your white house during the war of 1812. I notice you've rebuilt it! It's Very Nice.

A quick apology to Barbelith users...

A quick apology to Barbelith users... 06/24/2005 09:23 PM

This is a bit of a heads-up and an apology to regular Barbelith users who are going to the site today and finding that it is completely unfunctioning. Barbelith has grown in scale enormously over the last six years to the extent that it can no longer properly function on a pair.com shared server. Mainly this is a problem with the sheer number and size of the database requests that it generates. Anyway, the upshot of all of this is that I need to move it and the rest of my online empire to a dedicated server, which means more monthly costs and a fairly substantial amount of organisational work in the meantime. Unfortunately, I'm also on holiday in San Francisco at the moment (my first holiday for nine months or so), I don't have regular sustainable access to the internet and this is is not the kind of large-scale enterprise that I want to undertake in net cafés over wifi or sitting in the back of Starbucks. So unfortunately, as of this afternoon, Barbelith will be closed for at least three or four days, and potentially for a full week.

I'd just like to apologise to all of the regulars for this annoyance - I promise I'll sort it all out on my return to London (if not before). In the meantime, if you want to donate to the server fund to keep Barbelith running then you can do so by clicking on the button below. Sorry again.
