Wi-Fi's Function Starts to Infiltrate
Homes
06/18/2004 11:54 PM

Wi-Fi isn't just for networking any more: devices hang off home networks for audio, video, voice: Julio Ojeda-Zapata files a round-up of the transformation of a home wireless network from an early adopter's geeky add-on to a mass-market offering with support from companies like Comcast and Qwest. Remember when cable firms threatened users who shared their network connections with their families? Ojeda-Zapata notes the increasing variety of devices that can use Wi-Fi networks as their Internet or local network feed, including Apple's new AirPort Express for beaming music to home stereos, Microsoft's Media Center Extender for their home entertainment hub, and Gateway's streaming DVD player....

Wi-Fi's new security standard has a
weakness

BoingBoing pal Glenn Fleishman writes:
I wrote a piece yesterday for the Mac journal TidBITS about the recently released implementation of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) in the AirPort Extreme product line from Apple. WPA replaces WEP by fixing its various holes. That article drew a response from Robert Moskowitz, long-time wireless security expert, who sent me a paper and his permission to post it about a serious weakness in the consumer version of WPA: if you choose short keys that are comprised of real words, WPA keys can be easily broken through passive access to a network.

I've written this up and posted his paper here. Interestingly, the problem is all at the presentation layer, not at the encryption layer. It's a flaw with how manufacturers are offering users the chance to create and enter WPA keys, and thus could be easily fixed with a driver update -- no firmware necessary.

Microsoft clips Wi-Fi's wings 02/13/2004 01:27 PM
Microsoft has responded to complaints that Windows XP sometimes has problems connecting to Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the response is: "Tough. Wait it out."

"This behavior is expected," says a terse article in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. "You must wait up to three minutes for the network configuration to complete." There's no fix, no patch, no workaround. "The wireless network card driver may not respond immediately when Windows XP initializes the network components and associates the wireless network card driver," says the article. "When this behavior occurs, Windows XP appears to stop responding."

AP - Alas, wireless Internet may not be the technology sector's salvation after all. Small companies, some publicly traded, are burning cash trying to turn Wi-Fi into viable business. Some have already shut down.

Wi-Fi's Openings Lead to Arrests, Legal
Worries
12/02/2003 12:35 AM
News.com's Richard Shim pulls together several related threads about the risks and liabilities of Wi-Fi networks in light of recent arrests: While there's not a simple connection between you leaving a Wi-Fi access point open and someone committing a crime across it, the recent child pornography and brain-dead IT department network exploitation arrests are causing a lot more discussion. Because Wi-Fi networks aren't straightforward to secure now, the risk of lawsuits is low. This doesn't address purposely open APs in community networks or free networks either, or legitimate users who have paid to use commercial networks who then commit criminal acts! Interestingly, Lowe's customers weren't hurt by the fact that three men apparently were able to gain easy access to their Wi-Fi networks in several places and insert a credit-card-collecting crack into the system. Because Lowe's has a corporate IT operation, I would imagine Lowe's would have been liable for negligence if customer information had been misused. They should have known better....

quattro_clock.jpg imageAs the next in Near Near Future's 'Strangely Familiar' series of gadgets, this Quattro prototype alarm is a solid translucent block that has no visible buttons or markings. As the Quattro is rotated, its function changes—on the side it's a radio, tilted up it's an alarm, and horizontally it's a clock, each indicated by a contextual change in the display on the front. It gets better: the Quattro recognizes when you get close and lights up touch-sensitive buttons. Then it gets even betterer: a wirelessly connected teddy bear triggers the alarm's snooze function when you give it a hug. I want this future very badly.

Function

Getting Intimate With PHP's Mail()
Function
01/07/2003 02:46 PM
PHP provides a handy and convenient way to send email. As you probably already know, this is through the mail() function. This function is a great way to send mail using a simple and standard interface that hides the complexity and quirks of various system programs that are responsible for sending mail. (Sendmail and Qmail are two examples of popular mail programs. You would have to talk directly to the web servers mail program if the mail() function did not exist). This tutorial will introduce you to the basics of sending mail from PHP scripts. We will also develop a simple HTML form to help us work with variables.

"btn" I nearly gave this article a miss because it sounded like a rehash of the PHP manual. What I like about it is it also shows you how to call sendmail from PHP. Yeah, i never knew how to do this... i'm more of a Mac/Windows kinda guy.

You can probably name at least one IDE providing support for PHP function name code completion. PHP.net is just beta testing the same feature on the search page. Try selecting the 'function list' lookup option and start typing in a function name in the search field. You can autocomplete the name with the space key and navigate in the dropdown with the up and down cursor keys. We welcome feedback on this feature at the webmasters email address, but please submit any bugs you find in the bug system.

Disk CleanUp for Windows 9x/NT is a small disk utility designed to clear previously deleted files. I've been advocating FastCGI as the most stable way to run PHP on Windows for a long time. Now I see Zend has decided to commercialize such a FastCGI solution.

Open source is an extremely incestous activity. Everyone works together and competes together (I just hope they don't sleep together). The FastCGI work was done by an Shane Caraveo, who works for ActiveState, a company that sells products that directly competes with Zend. And in the fine tradition of open source, there is always a free solution when you don't want to pay anything - you can use the free FastCGI+PHP installer for Windows I wrote a while back.
