its computer disks turned over...

The amazing world of my French class
The amazing world of my French class
04/07/2005 10:43 AMOn the very first day of French class, Madame spent the good part of
our first hour together having everyone state their name, where they
were from, what they did, and what hobbies and/or activites they
enjoyed. I was surprised (and relieved) to discover that I was the
only American. And in fact, one of only two North Americans! I tried
to jot down as best I could everyone's name and hometown. Roughly
here's the summary by country:
America (1) me!
Brazil (3)
China (5)
Columbia (1)
Japan (3)
Korea (1)
México (1)
Poland (1)
Russia (2)
Spain (1)
And what's even more interesting are the cities the group represents;
the list reads like a "Great Cities of the World." Beijing, Moscow,
México City, São Paolo, Shanghai, Tokyo...And of course,
we're all in Paris learning French. It's pretty amazing.
Also what's even more amazing is our teacher, who seems to be able to
speak nearly all the languages of her students. Sometimes she'll
translate something to English or Spanish (which today tripped up one
of the Chinese students, who started to ask about a word and the
teacher said, "No, that's Spanish!"), when she isn't using French to
define things. But she also cracked some joke in Chinese that got the
Chinese students chuckling. And yesterday she surprised us all when
she went to the board and started writing in Russian! Madame le
professeur est incroyable!

A Theory of Global Capitalism -
Production, Class and State in a
Transnational World
07/16/2004 09:54 PMGlobalization is a topic surrounded by controversy and contention, as
evidenced by the numerous studies of it and the many political
movements both for and against it. Whilst there is little agreement on
the nature of globalization, it is generally accepted that the world
is going through a period of increasing change and growing
interconnection. Do these changes have historical precedent or do they
represent a qualitatively new process? Are these changes benefical to
society or detrimental? Which groups benefit from these changes and
which groups are threatened? Are these changes inevitable or are other
alternatives possible? These are some of the questions addressed by
William I. Robinson's A Theory of Global Capitalism.

Weinberger: "free access to every work
of creativity in the world is a better
world"
09/21/2004 04:55 PM
Cory Doctorow:
David Weinberger, author of the brilliant and seminal
Small Pieces Loosely Joined, has posted a draft of a great
speech on copyright that he's giving at the World Economic Forum in
NYC tomorrow:
[F]or one moment, I'd like you to perform an exercise in selective
attention. Forget every other consideration — even though they're
fair and important considerations — and see if you can acknowledge
that a world in which everyone has free access to every work of
creativity in the world is a better world. Imagine your children could
listen to any song ever created anywhere. What a blessing that would
be!
...We publish stuff that gets its meaning and its reality by being
read, viewed or heard. An unpublished novel is about as meaningful and
real as an imaginary novel. It needs its readers to be. But readers
aren't passive consumers. We reimagine the book, we complete the
vision of the book. Readers appropriate works, make them their own.
Listeners and viewers, too. In making a work public, artists enter
into partnership with their audience. The work succeeds insofar as the
audience makes it their own, takes it up, understands it within their
own unpredictable circumstances. It leaves the artist's hands and
enters our lives. And that's not a betrayal of the work. That's its
success. It succeeds insofar as we hum it, quote it, appropriate it so
thoroughly that we no longer remember where the phrase came from.
That's artistic success, although it's a branding failure.

In A Virtual World?
Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AMLast month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the
online game Second Life had decided that players
own any
intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad
idea, since it basically took all of the
problems of our
intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world -
where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James
Grimmelmann, has been thinking
a lot about that very idea and
has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading -
discussion about
intellectual property issues as it relates to games.
It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the
issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much
more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really
seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game
actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which
basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in
the real world should apply.
