MSN Launch New Internet Search Worldwide

MSN Launch New Internet Search Worldwide 02/01/2005 09:39 PM
MSN will launch their MSN Search Service in 25 markets and 10 languages worldwide, today.

The MSN Search engine has been in public beta testing since November 2004. The MSN Search team have been gathering feedback from a variety of different users in order to release their finely tuned search engine.

Through gathering this feedback the MSN Search team have been listening to customers throughout the whole development process. The end result is a search engine that allows customers to search specific tailored queries for their own needs. MSN Search allows users to search the Web, news, images, music, desktop and Microsoft Encarta. Users can query the search engine and receive more than 1.5 million answers from Encarta. Users can also type the name of an artist, song or album into MSN Search and get links to information on those songs and sample music. In indexing results for their search engine, MSN have Search bots that index daily or weekly to ensure results are accurate and up to date.

In a statement to associated press, Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of the MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division at Microsoft said “We’re committed to continuous improvement in the speed, precision and ease of use of our search service ... this built-from-the-ground-up version of MSN Search provides an infrastructure that enables us to rapidly innovate and give consumers precisely the information they’re looking for, no matter where it’s located"

MSN Search users can also use search tools that give them more control over how and where they search for information. Search builder allows people to extensively customize searches by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain search criteria — such as a specific site or domain, country or region, or language — via a menu of adjustable onscreen dials. Search near me offers users the ability to tailor their search results to a specific geographic location to ensure results relevant to where they are or where they want to go.

Along with today's announcement, MSN have also released an updated Desktop Search Beta. The new version of the Toolbar Suite (02.00.0001.1203) fixes several bugs, stability and robustness issues and has fixed the virus pop ups problem.

MSN is planning to promote their newly launched search engine with TV adverts, web adverts and in magazines across the United States.

Documentation of Internet Filtering Worldwide by Jonathan Zittrain and Benjamin Edelman
http://cyber.law.harvar d.edu/filtering/

A variety of organizations, institutions, companies, and countries seek to restrict Internet access from within their premises and territories. For example, companies may seek to improve employee productivity by restricting access to leisure sites; libraries and schools may seek to avoid exposing children to sexually-explicit content, or be required to do so; countries may seek to control the information received by their citizens generally. Common among nearly all these applications is the public unavailability of the filtering lists -- that, by the design of filtering systems, users cannot and do not know the set of specific sites blocked. In some cases users might ask for a specific site and be told of its unavailability due to filtering, but in other cases such unavailability may be conflated with unremarkable network blockages -- a Web site might be unreachable for any number of reasons, and the failure to view it at a particular moment cannot reliability be attributed to active filtering. With this project we seek to document and analyze a large number of Web pages blocked by various types of filtering regimes, and ultimately create a distributed tool enabling Internet users worldwide to gather and relay such data from their respective locations on the Internet. This has been added to Privacy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Security Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.

The official websites of the Bush and Kerry campaigns have several security holes -- some small, some big. The result could be fake news stories or doctored photos, even directives to vote for the other guy. By Michelle Delio.

The Last Internet Campaign?

The Last Internet Campaign? 02/15/2004 09:23 AM
Clay's coda for the Dean campaign hits the nail on the head:

"We are seeing the last internet campaign. The advantage of having the Dean story play so big is that everyone was watching. None of this was lost on Karl Rove, or on Terry McAuliffe. Given what Dean was able to do with internet tools, they will become a key part of the fall campaign, and so completely integral by by 2008 that they won’t rate more than a mention, much less a cover story in the NY Times magazine."

The interesting question, though, is what a successful Internet campaign would look like.  Dean showed how the Net can take an obscure candidate and vault him to the head of the pack.  What would a real Internet campaign by an establishment figure like John Kerry -- or George W. Bush -- look like?  We'll see beta versions this fall, but they will almost certainly be copies of Dean's techniques rather than real innovations.

I have a hunch that the first Internet campaign to truly mobilize voters on a mass scale (as opposed to fundraising and core supporters) won't start around a candidate.  One of the key, and under-appreciated, elements of Dean's early success was MoveOn.org.  MoveOn never actually endorsed Dean, but its tactics and worldview were aligned with the Dean campaign. Its early online poll was the first demonstration of Dean's "front-runner" status.  MoveOn, thanks to help from friends like George Soros, will be significant player in the Fall campaign.  Yet MoveOn wasn't started to elect a President; it was started to defend a President (Clinton) against impeachment efforts.

What mot people really support are causes, not candidates.  The cause many Dean supporters were passionate about was defeating President Bush, and that ultimately came back to haunt Howard Dean in the form of "electability."  The power of the Net in politics, as Clay and others have eloquently written, is its ability to lower coordination barriers among large numbers of people.  Thus, it's most effective where people already support a cause.

It's hard to remember now, but back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there were two such causes: health care reform and deficit reduction.  The health care debate was co-opted by the traditional players, but on the deficit side, the Concord Coalition did an amazing job of mobilizing popular anger, largely among young people, about the ruinous course of our fiscal policies.  And they did it without any of the Internet-based tools groups like MoveOn are exploiting today.

So yes, we've seen the last Internet campaign, but not the first Internet President.  That will have to wait for a movement that starts outside the existing political boxes, and a candidate able to make the most of it.

The internet campaign that won

The internet campaign that won 02/18/2004 01:24 PM
The "internet-based" campaign that won. Nickolas bought ads on 11 mostly left-leaning blogs, including Daily Kos, Political Wire and Eschaton, planning to make up the money out of his own salary if the ads didn't pay for themselves. He needn't have worried. By the end of the day, the campaign had made back its money and then some. The following Monday, Nickolas showed Chandler 65 e-mails that had piled up since the previous night. "I said, 'Oh my god, these are all contributions,'" Nickolas remembered saying to Chandler. "And he said, 'Since when?' and I said, 'Since last night.' He was in disbelief that people around the country would care about this race."
