No soup for you! When we were developing SOAP in 1998 and 1999, another group was working on WebDAV. SOAP was higher level, you could create a toolkit that mapped SOAP calls on the procedure-calling mechanism in any scripting system. I never understood WebDAV, so I hired a smart young guy to implement it for UserLand (he works at IBM now). Never happened.

There were three groups at Microsoft, one working on WebDAV, another working with Allaire on WDDX, and a third working on SOAP. Anyway, if this were a horror movie, we'd say They're baaaaack, about the WebDAV folk. Amazingly, they're talking about retrofitting weblog APIs to be part of WebDAV. What an stunningly stupid step backwards.

Some corporate programmers are amazing that way, rapidly driving off the cliff to get off the high road and quickly get mired in the mud. Glad I'm not involved in that debate. Eventually even SOAP got mired, so we stuck with XML-RPC. Oh for the good old days, when I could ratify a standard proposed by Evan in a matter of hours. Look at all the overhead that's come into it. Blogging as a technical art, may almost be over, the standards nazis are taking over.

Nazis, UFO's, aliens, Oh my!

Nazis, UFO's, aliens, Oh my! 05/12/2004 12:55 PM
Sec rets of the Third Reich...UFO's? "...As Sir Roy Feddon, Chief of the Technical Mission to Germany for the Ministry of Aircraft Production stated in 1945. "…I have seen enough of their designs and production plans to realise that if they (the Germans) had managed to prolong the war some months longer, we would have been confronted with a set of entirely new and deadly developments in air warfare.".....upright, vertical take-off aircraft.....a saucer-shaped craft with enclosed twin rotors.....Cruise missiles....the V-2....[predecessor of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles]....a rocket-powered fighter, the ME 163...These then, were some of the known German advances. However there were also hints of darker technologies not fully understood." Woo woo! So begins the four part "Secrets of the Third Reich" - where does fact merge into fiction? It's such a great read that it almost doesn't matter. A version with pictures lives here (go to menu, "Book 4"). Then, there's The Hunt For Zero Point We have met the aliens, and they are us ?

Ukranian cave system that hid Jews from
Nazis for nearly a year
07/22/2004 12:52 AM
This is an incredible National Geographic piece on the exploration of the Priest's Grotto, a cave system in the Ukraine where 38 Jews hid from the Nazis for nearly a year.
Once inside, Nicola marveled at not only the remarkable natural features of the cave but signs of human presence, including walls and old shoes and walls made of stones...

"It's amazing," Nicola told National Geographic News. "When I go into a cave I have special boots, because an ankle sprain deep in a cave could be serious business. I have special wicking underwear, so I don't get hypothermia, a special suit, special gloves for gripping things. I have three independent light sources—that's a standard rule. This is all for a day trip into a cave, and yet this is a situation where average people lived here for nearly a year."...

Why has the cheese returned?

Why has the cheese returned? 12/06/2003 03:20 PM

A weekend without my beautiful Powerbook means lots of time to sort out my disasterous financial / bill-paying / mounds of paper situation. This - in turn - means that some forms of music television have become an essential part of my life. Which means in turn that I'm being exposed to what seems to me to be a ludicrous excess of Christmas singles. Like dozens of them! Way more than normal. The other day I wrote about the The Darkness' effort but it's far far far from alone. Check out this highly inexhaustive list:

And that's just the ones with explicitly Christmas themes (and doesn't include blatant Christmas-mongering attempts like the Ozzy/Kelly Osbourne atrocity). So I wonder to myself? Why is this Christmas so poptastic? Is there some kind of correlation between the perceived redundancy of the music industry and a prevalence of these cheesy singles? Or does it correlate to anxiety about the state of the world? Or is it a sign of complacency? Or are we all just incredibly naff? Thoughts on a postcard please (and let me know if I've missed any of the little bastards)...

AOL's Got CDs Being Returned By Mail

AOL's Got CDs Being Returned By Mail 04/16/2004 06:32 PM
You may recall our recent story about just how many "free hours" CDs and DVDs AOL sends. Well, now, a California politician is trying to force AOL to take back the discs... and pay for postage. A law being introduced here would re quire any promotional CD sent through the mail to include postage-paid envelopes for shipping them back to the original company. Of course, perhaps what AOL should do is include postage paid envelopes for others on their list. Then, if you got a CD you didn't want, you would just be passing it on to the next person (though, I guess you would then need another postage-paid envelope included for the next person... and so on).
