There’s only one war on our television screens now –
that other war, the one from just a year ago, has been forgotten
– but not by everyone. In Afghanistan, filmmaker Jamie Doran has
uncovered evidence of a massacre: Taliban prisoners of war suffocated
in containers, shot in the desert under the watch of American
troops.
After screening the videotape last fall, the European Parliament
called for an investigation. The United Nations has authorized an
official investigation into the film’s allegations, but only if
the security of its members can be guaranteed. And security is hard to
find in northern Afghanistan. Since this documentary was filmed,
eyewitnesses have been tortured. Others have disappeared or been
killed.

Michael Powell Has No Problem Killing

12/30/2003 02:48 PMA bit more evidence that FCC chair Michael Powell actually does know
what he's talking about. The San Jose Mercury News is posting
some
quotes from his recent visit to Silicon Valley that suggest he
understands many of the bigger issues facing the FCC these days and
isn't (as some have suggested) looking to regulate everything. On
access into the home, he says: "We don't want one pipe. We're doing
everything we can to incent the free-radical opportunities for
multiple routes to the home. So when you look at FCC proceedings,
that's where there's so much energy going into WiFi, and
ultra-wideband and powerline broadband and laser optics and free-space
optics and other policies that encourage and incent the creation of
alternate digital platforms." He even says that trying to regulate a
company like Vonage is the same as killing them. He also, explicitly,
realizes the very important separation of the platform from the
application
and realizes the ramifications of that: "And that's
why if you're the music industry, you're scared. And if you're the
television studio, movie industry, you're scared. And if you're an
incumbent infrastructure carrier, you'd better be scared. Because this
application separation is the most important paradigm shift in the
history of communications, and will change things forever.... I have
no problem if a big and venerable company no longer exists tomorrow,
as long as that value is transferred somewhere else in the economy."
Of course, those big companies have lots of lobbyists and friends in
high places who are going to try to make Powell's job more difficult.
What he needs to do is to convince them that, in moving forward, there
are even more opportunities to make money.

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PMLast week we noted a new study saying that
people get
annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear
one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made
sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring
to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the
reason for the annoyance
is that it
shows that we're more curious about what the other party is
saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's
the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of
curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when
loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go
against the opinion many people have expressed that things like
"push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would
be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation.
In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that
mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more
phones to make them
less annoying. Of course, the study only
set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a
face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone
situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the
annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language
to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.
