Thanks to the Instititute for Information Law (IViR) in collaboration with DISC, a public domain initiative by Nederland Kennisland and Waag Society, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Culture, for making CC-Netherlands a reality.

The Netherlands to Get More Wi-Fi 10/28/2003 11:09 PM

US to Invade The Netherlands

US to Invade The Netherlands 03/13/2003 07:33 PM
According to Human Rights Watch, in order to protect US soldiers from being brought to justice for any war crimes they may commit, Bush has signed a new law that ... authorizes the use of military force to liberate any American or citizen of a U.S.-allied country being held by the [International Criminal] court, which is located in The Hague. Since the Hague (or "den Haag" as those beastly Dutch refer to it) is in the Netherlands, this has stirred up some consternation. Dutch blogger and future enemy soldier, Niek Hockx, has blogged about this amusingly. In protest of Holland's...

T-Mobile to Try Flarion in the
Netherlands
09/08/2004 12:18 PM
T-Mobile has deployed a network using Flarion's Flash-OFDM gear in The Hague: Nextel and Vodafone are also trying Flarion networks but it's still a coup for Flarion to sign on T-Mobile as another trialer. I examined some of the many different broadband wireless options available or soon to be available in a recent article for the Seattle Times. I had intended to come up with a somewhat definitive conclusion about whether technologies like Flarion's may elbow out some potential market space from WiMax. But it's just too soon in the development of WiMax to know. I do think that Flarion has an advantage in that its equipment is available today and it already has some deployments. But it has the fact that it uses a proprietary technology working against it....

And my alarm clock is unreliable and I'm scared I'm going to sleep through everything...

Kazaa Ruled Legal In The Netherlands

Kazaa Ruled Legal In The Netherlands 12/19/2003 01:03 PM
Quite a day for the file sharers of the world. Not only did the Appeals Court reverse the Verizon subpoena ruling, but over in the Netherlands, a judge has ruled that Kazaa is legal. This appears to be a similar ruling to the one earlier this year in the US that found that the various file sharing systems, themselves, were only tools, and not liable for copyright infringement that happened via their networks. The recording industry will, of course, appeal.

The Atlantic World: America and the Netherlands
http ://international.loc.gov/intldl/awkbhtml/awkbhome.html

Developed by the Library of Congress in cooperation with the National Library of the Netherlands, this is the first stage of an ongoing project, The Atlantic World: America and the Netherlands, being produced under a cooperative agreement signed by the two institutions earlier this year. The companion site of the National Library of the Netherlands, is the The Memory of the Netherlands.

The Atlantic World is available in both English and Dutch, and is intended for use in schools and libraries and by the general public in both countries and around the world. It includes more than 70 items totaling some 11,737 images from the collections of the Library of Congress, the National Library of the Netherlands, and six other Dutch institutions that are cooperating with the National Library on the project: the Netherlands National Archives, the Municipal Archives of Amsterdam, the Plantage Library of the University of Amsterdam, and the National Maritime Museum. Among the items digitized for the project are a letter describing the purchase of Manhattan from the Native Americans in 1626, an etching of the Mohawk Sychnecta, early land grants and patents from Dutch settlers, seventeenth- century maps, and an early description of the Dutch colony on the eve of its transfer to the British.

Netherlands Bound - Ticer Course on
Digital Libraries!
04/11/2005 08:28 AM

I’m thrilled to be included as a presenter in this year’s International Ticer School at Tilburg University in the Netherlands this coming August, even more so after I saw the list of other speakers! Here’s the press release:

“The International Ticer School (known for its former International Summer School on the Digital Library) offers a brand new, modular course for librarians and publishers: ‘Digital Libraries à la Carte: Choices for the Future,’ to be held at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, 22-26 August
2005.

From its 'menu' of five one-day modules, you can pick your choice:

  • trends and strategic issues
  • technological developments, relevant to libraries
  • consortia and licensing
  • open Access and institutional repositories
  • the role of libraries in teaching and learning
Top speakers will present their views. Below is a selection.
  • Marissa Mayer is Director, Consumer Web Products at Google
  • Derk Haank is CEO of Springer and former CEO of Elsevier
  • Peter Suber and Richard Poynder are among the most cited authors on Open Access
  • Jenny Levine's blog (theshiftedlibrarian.com) is read by thousands of librarians
  • Carol Tenopir has published over 200 journal articles and is cited frequently
  • Deb deBruijn closed the worldwide biggest consortium deal (over 50 million dollar)
  • Gerry McKiernan is the compiler of several known Web registries
  • Steven Gilbert is president of The TLT Group and an expert on learning landscapes
  • Pat Maughan transforms the undergraduate curriculum at the prestigious UC Berkeley to include information literacy training
To guarantee a highly interactive programme, the number of participants is limited to 45 per module, lectures contain an interactive component, and two
modules are concluded with a practical workshop. The course is recommended by JISC, the DARE project and SURF Diensten.

The course website can be found at www.ticer.nl/05carte/. If you register before 1 June 2005, we can offer you a discount. Do you want a quick update in just one to five days? Then Tilburg is the place to be this summer!”

Sounds pretty awesome, doesn’t it? There’s more information on the web site (including full descriptions of each module), so if you can attend, I highly encourage it!
