Security Protection That Fights Back

Security Protection That Fights Back

Security Protection That Fights Back 06/18/2004 03:57 PM

While there's been plenty of talk about setting up security technology that would "fight back" when computers are attacked, most have stayed away from the idea, admitting that it could cause a lot more damage than it prevents. However, one company is now promoting that very idea and using a bunch of war metaphors to support their position on "information warfare." The idea is that they have a standard network security product, but if things get bad enough, it will somehow go on the offensive against the source of the problem. That "somehow" is a big question mark however. The company won't describe (at all) how they fight back, so there's no way to know what they're really doing. This could be a big problem - especially now that many attacks seem to come from compromised computers. What happens when these sorts of offensive systems then start attacking each other?

RealNetworks Fights Back 07/29/2004 03:19 PM
RealNetworks has issued a statement in reply to Apple's statement. According to RealNetworks, "Consumers, and not Apple, should be the ones choosing what music goes on their iPod."

"Harmony creates a way to lock content from Real's music store in a way that is compatible with the iPod, Windows Media DRM devices, and Helix DRM devices. Harmony technology does not remove or disable any digital rights management system. Apple has suggested that new laws such as the DMCA are relevant to this dispute. In fact, the DMCA is not designed to prevent the creation of new methods of locking content and explicitly allows the creation of interoperable software."

It's no secret that spammers are increasingly using dirty tricks to continue the spread of spam - while also doing their best to annoy anti-spam activists. They've been launching denial of service attacks on just about all anti-spam sites, and recently tricked a registrar into taking away SpamCop's domain name. Some in the anti-spam world are sinking lower themselves and looking at ways to fight back by issuing automatic denial of service attacks against links in spam messages. There are a number of obvious problems with such a plan. First of all, it's illegal. More importantly, though, many anti-spam offerings have been shown to be a little too quick on the trigger, leading to many legitimate messages getting tagged as spam - and folks being hosted on the same servers often found their own email blocked. What happens when a denial of service attack hits one of those servers? Even worse, the spammers will begin to look on this as a tool to do denial of service attacks on their own. They no longer need to infect machines with trojans. Just spam the website they want attacked and the anti-spam tools will do the work for them.

The Connected Camera Fights Back

The Connected Camera Fights Back 05/03/2004 05:18 AM
Every time someone trashes the idea of camera phones because the camera quality sucks, we try to point out that the amazing thing about a camera phone isn't in how it compares to a regular camera, but the fact that camera is connected. Howard Rheingold makes the point especially clear in his latest column for TheFeature, pointing out that one way to fight back against the ubiquitous surveillance cameras all around is to do some "inverse surveillance" with camera phones back at official misdeeds. He makes the point that in the past, when an abuse of power was happening by the police or other authorities, one of the first things they would try to do is to confiscate and/or destroy cameras that witnessed the event. However, if the camera is connected and streaming the images onto the internet in real-time, it doesn't do much good to confiscate the camera. The content has already been published.
