It's Official - the future sucks. Why has the future been such a let down? It's more 1984 than Barbarella. If we can have ID cards and video surveillance, then why can't we have intergalactic flying cars and hot chicks in skimpy plastic outfits? Clearly I'm not the only one wondering where all the cool stuff went - check out RetroFuture

Where's My Flying Car?

Where's My Flying Car? 11/17/2003 07:51 PM
It's been decades since people have suggested that everyone would have a flying car or a personal jetpack. There are any number of "flying" technologies that futurists expected to be commonplace by the new millennium, and here we are a few years in and we're still pretty firmly grounded. MSNBC is looking at seven "promised" flying technologies that still haven't come home - from flying cars to personal jetpacks to regular supersonic commercial air travel (bye bye Concorde) to space tourism. Some of these may come true eventually, but they've all been talked about for years, and we don't seem that much closer.

War Flying

Bob wants to put WiFi in the Sky. “So here’s my plan for really cheap aerial Internet service. I’m preparing a number of experiments using a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router mounted on the roof of my house in Charleston, SC. The router is running Sveasoft firmware that gives me direct control of transmitter power if needed. I’ll be testing it with a variety of antennas, mainly omnidirectional but perhaps I’ll try a sector antenna, too. The other end of the wireless connection will be a second WRT54GS mounted in my funky homebuilt airplane. Operating the pair of routers as an Ethernet-to-Ethernet bridge will give me much higher performance than I could ever expect from just using a WiFi card in my notebook computer. And I’ll be testing a variety of antennas on the belly of my funky airplane, too.”

Flying Updates 12/21/2003 02:31 AM
I just realized that I've been remiss in updating my flying blog. I hadn't touched it at all during the month of December. After spending a bit of quality time with my log book and re-reading some of the recent club e-mail, I've added about five new entries. They cover everything from my DG-1000 checkout (and loops) to some scenic flying on the Wright Brother's 100th Anniversary earlier this week (pictures). It's been a good month of flying so...

More Flying Robots 04/08/2005 08:06 PM
There have been several flying robots in the news lately. A Marine Corps News story describes their Wasp Micro Air Vehicle (MAV), a hand-launched robot plane with Kevlar wings and side-looking cameras. Another MAV being designed by Honeywell for DARPA is described in a News.com article. And, last, is an autonomous helicopter being developed at New Mexico State University's Rio-Robo Lab, described in an Albuquerque Tribune article and an earlier NMSU press release.

Boating versus Flying?

Boating versus Flying? 07/11/2004 11:55 PM

My trip to Maryland included a cruise in the Chesapeake Bay on my brother's sailboat.  Afterwards I encountered an administrator from Howard University medical school ("the oldest black med school in the country") who said that he was trying to figure out whether to take up boating or flying as a weekend activity.  Boating seems like a more sociable activity.  Everyone with a boat in the Washington, DC area heads east toward the Bay on Friday evening or Saturday morning (those government jobs are fantastic but they result in terrible beach traffic jams because nobody ever has to work on a weekend).  The marina is packed with boats and people, some of whom are hanging out on their boats without even bothering to leave the dock.  Once on the water there are dozens of boats within sight at all times and the captain must exercise constant vigilance to avoid colliding with a fellow weekend enthusiast.  If one's boat is equipped with a VHF radio one is required to monitor Channel 16 at all times.  This channel is a non-stop chatter of hailing and emergency messages.

The drive to a general aviation airport, by contrast, is usually free of traffic.  Airplanes are big and need to be spaced apart from each other.  Nobody wants to hang out inside his tiny Cirrus or Piper unless the plane is about to depart on a trip.  You're likely to run into someone you know at the airport but not likely to run into any particular friend.  One in the air and above the traffic pattern altitude you're unlikely to see more than a handful of airplanes even on a 300-mile trip.  Until September 11th there was seldom a need to monitor a radio frequency for a trip in clear weather and even in these times of paranoia and strife there might only be one transmission on 121.5, the emergency frequency, every 10 minutes.

Flying seems like a better way to keep mentally young.  You are challenging yourself to think and react quickly and rationally despite a sometimes frightening environment.  I ran into a former MIT professor at the helicopter school in Nashua, NH.  He is 69 years old, has been flying airplanes for years, and is now taking up helicopters with the intention of buying a Robinson R44 (on my wishlist of airplanes).  I was shocked when he said that he was 69 because he doesn't seem older than 50.

Thoughts from those who are both boaters and pilots?

Micro Flying Robots Everywhere

Micro Flying Robots Everywhere 08/19/2004 09:04 PM
A recent press release from Epson about the FR-II micro robot has generated a lot of story submissions lately. The FR-II is powered by two ultrasonic motors which drive opposing rotors. The tiny robot is just 136mm x 85mm, weigh 12.3 grams including two gyros, batteries, bluetooth link, and a digital camera. It has a flight time of about 3 minutes. You can see photos and read more about the robot at the BBC, space.com, and Slashdot. Meanwhile, Gizmodo reminds us of the Pixelito which, while it is an R/C helicopter and not a true robot, weighs in at only 6.9 grams.

MSSMP Flying Saucer

MSSMP Flying Saucer 04/07/2005 12:44 PM

mssmp.jpgAlthough sadly never making it to full service, the Multipurpose Security and Surveillance Mission Platform (MSSMP) clearly had a lot to offer. In addition to a cruising speed of 80 knots, a three hour operation time, and an 8,000-foot ceiling, it was also shaped like a flying saucer, scientifically proven to be the shape most able to inspire giggles in enemy troops. While dexterous, the ducted-air unit has been supplanted by a variety of cheaper, more disposable UAVs. Perhaps the most surprising thing is that ducted flying machines fly at all.

Russia's flying saucers

Russia's flying saucers 04/13/2005 11:50 AM
David Pescovitz: Designed and tested in Russia, the unusual-looking EKIP aircraft is suited for large loads and doesn't require a long landing strip. From the EKIP Aviation Concern Web site:
Pics 3.1The "EKIP" aircrafts can carry heavy large-scale loads (100 and more tons) at long distances (thousands of kilometers) at a speed of 500-700 km/h at the altitude of 8-13 km. These flying vehicles can move near the surface of ground or water using the air cushion at a speed up to 160 km/h and glide at a speed up to 400 km/h as a "screen-plane."

The flying vehicles "EKIP" do not require an airfield. They can land on airfields of any category, including ground and water surfaces. The length of the runway for heavy vehicles (several hundred tons) does not exceed 600 meters, take-off and landing are performed at steep descent trajectory, which decreases the level of noise affecting the vicinity.
Last year, MosNews reported that the US Naval Air Systems Command signed a deal with EKIP to produce some of the aircraft to fight fires and monitor oil pipelines. Link (Thanks David Steinberg and Steve Marks!)
