Y! Japan Day #3
Y! Japan Day #3
10/29/2003 12:10 AM Lots of good talks today. From the point of view of a US engineer, it
was an especially interesting day. Why? Because most of the day was
taken up by representatives from each of the non-US properties talking
about what they've been up to, problems they're having, and so on. We
got to hear from: Australia China Europe Hong Kong Japan Korea Latin
America Singapore Taiwan (Kimo) After the formal presentations were
over, a group of us headed out...

Y! Japan Day #2
10/29/2003 12:10 AMDay #2 went well. I did my ~1.5 hours of MySQL presentations in the
afternoon. (Rasmus did PHP in the morning.) Initial feedback is good
except for the fact that I spoke too quickly during the first talk.
Luckily someone reminded me to slow down for the second one. In the
evening, we headed downstairs to celebrate the Y! Japan earnings
announcement (they kicked some ass). All the non-Japan folks got to
stand up on stage to get recognized. However,...

Y! Japan Day #1 is Over
10/29/2003 12:10 AMThe first day of stuff at Y! Japan is over. We ended the day with a
nice welcome reception/party that just ended a bit ago. And I had a
few Japanese beers, which is always a good thing. The day went well.
The network flaked out once, but it was fixed pretty quickly. I'm
getting a chance to meet people that I've only known by name (if at
all) from various other offices, including Singapore, Korea, Taiwan,
Australia, and even...
Battlestar Japan
Battlestar Japan
05/23/2004 06:20 AM
You just gotta love a country where they show
live, professional go games on TV... With commentary! :-)
 |
Well, another three hour ordeal, and this wasn't actually such a bad
experience (as the aforementioned Troy).
I'm talking about the pilot of the new edition of Battlestar Galactica,
which I had the opportunity of catching on the flight. I remember
watching the original series
when I was really young - we had to get a new TV to watch it. Our old
Philips did not have an UHF receiver, and BG was on TV2 - so we got a
new Goldstar black-and-white set. Oh, the memories.
But this new version is actually not half bad. OK, so Starbuck and
Boomer are women (and there's some electricity between Starback and
Apollo already), though I liked the character of Cassiopeia from the
original series more. But it's perhaps the sign of the times. No
real complaints. The effects were wonderful, and having actually
silent space travel and semi-newtonian physics felt good for a change.
The space combats were staged well, though I still long for the
old-style Cylon fighters. They were the scariest things still seen on
TV, these new ones just look like something stolen out of a computer
game. I especially loved the "debris rain", and the fact
that most of the characters were really rather intelligent. No
glaring plot holes or gaping amounts of stupidity yet...
But yeah, I could see myself growing to like this. It's miles better
than Galactica 1980,
anyway... (Sheesh, flying motorcycles?)
(Yah, I'm in Tokyo now, and managed to catch a flu as well.
Bugger.)
Photoblox in Japan
Photoblox in Japan
05/25/2004 04:25 PMApparently a bunch of Japanese
bloggers have discovered Laszlo's Photoblox's photo album
component and embedded it into their blogs! The Google results
comes back with 1,500 hits.
I'm not that surprised that this has happened, as much as wondering
"how did this happen?"
Via my blog? Joi? I don;t believe Joi even knows or
notices anything about Laszlo, so i gotta wonder "hoe the hell did
they find out about Photoblox?"
If anyone knows (Adriaan?) - let me know! Thanks
UPDATE: This just in from Lyndon
Wong, Photoblox Product Manager....
Hey Marc,
There's seriously something going on with PhotoBlox in Japan.
Numerous blogs with embedded, customized photobloxes. A google search
indicates there are more photoblox users in Japan than in the rest of
the world combined.

First 24 hours in Japan
08/09/2004 07:37 AMMy first 24 hours in Japan included the following:
- a soak in a traditional Japanese public bath
- a swim in a 25-yard pool
- a visit to an enormous Buddhist temple complex that has been an
important pilgrimage site for hundreds of years
- a semi-traditional tea ceremony
- walking around three koi ponds
- a meal in a restaurant that has been in the same family and at the
same location for more than 300 years
All this without leaving Narita, the town in which Tokyo's
international airport is located!

And the fact that Budwiser is an import in Japan, and therefore more

I had a good trip. I'll surely have more to say about it in the next

Back to Japan
07/17/2004 01:05 PM
I'm on my way back to Japan. I thought I was going back to Japan
yesterday, but AFTER I checked my bags through to Tokyo, I looked at
my ticket and realized that I had a one night layover in San
Francisco. I should have stayed in Aspen. The weather (the fourth time
in the last year) grounded my flight to Denver, but I made it safely
to San Francisco.
Anyway, thanks for all the wonderful thoughts from the people at
Fortune Brainstorm 2004. It was GREAT. Once again, the small size and
diversity of the people totally trumped any other conference I've been
to in a year since the last one. See you next year. (hint hint
David)
See you again in Japan.

What's up between Japan and Korea
What's up between Japan and Korea
04/06/2005 03:22 PM
History Lesson:
Heart of the matter by Hayami Ichikawa and others at Asahi
Shimbun in Japan pinpoints
the real issue behind the ongoing conflict between Japan and Korea
over Dokdo (Takeshima)
islets: Koizumi and his cabinet are clueless.
Hayami understands why Koreans are so upset over Dokdo and explains
it well:
To the South Koreans, Takeshima, a group of islets called Tokto in
Korean, represents
a symbol of Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the
Korean Peninsula.
The incorporation of the Sea of Japan isles into Shimane Prefecture
on Feb. 22, 1905,
is viewed as a prelude to what Japan was later to inflict upon the
peninsula.
It's now 2005 and it seems to be happening all
over again.
Japanese government's history whitewashing service covers US too
because mentions
of the fact that no WMD has been found in Iraq were removed from
school textbook drafts
at the request of Japanese government officials.
Pretty funny? Well, not if you consider that Japan is trying
to buy a seat in
the UN Security Council. Brrrrr!

class="right"/>Rio Japan has announced two new flash memory-based
players, the Si-300 and the Si-200C. Both players use that very
attractive "OLED screen behind a mirror" bit to hide their display
when its not in use. The 2i-200C [pictured] is a pendant-style answer
to the iRiver N10, although at 4cm square it might be a bit too
big to be practical. Both players will be available at the end of this
month at $200 for the Si-300 and $160 for the Si-200c.

Technorati Japan
12/22/2004 01:55 AM
Technorati and Digital Garage just
announced that they will work together to set up Technorati Japan
which will be established as a subsidiary of Digital Garage and will
distribute Technorati services in Japan. I am a co-founder and former
co-CEO of Digital Garage. Digital Garage was a company that Kaoru
Hayashi and I established in 1994 and we merged his advertising
business and my Internet business together. We ran the company
together and did a bunch of things like bring Infoseek to Japan. I
later left the company to help run Infoseek Japan when it was spun
out. This is the first real work I've done with Digital Garage since I
left. It is really deja vu. When we brought Infoseek to Japan, people
didn't understand the concept of ad impressions and we had to do a lot
of teaching. We had to explain that impressions and clickthroughs
could be measured unlike sponsorships and ads in magazines.
With Technorati Japan, we're going to go through a similar process
again, this time explaining that it's now about conversations. We need
to explain that companies and people can see what other people are
saying in real time and participate in the conversations, and that
it's not about banner ads anymore. I'm also excited that we will soon
have a Japanese Technorati site for all of the Japanese bloggers.
We hope to get the service running sometime next year, but we're
going to get started right away trying to get people to understand
what this real live web and conversation stuff is all about.
Obviously, Japan is just the first step in our international
strategy, but it's nice being able to do it with a team that I know
and trust. It's also fun watching my old family meet and work with my
new family. And last but not least, welcome to our family Gen. Gen left Sony
and joined Digital Garage to work on Technorati Japan.
Dave has
blogged about this too.

less than my 1.5Mbit DSL or 3Mbit Cable in the US. Think about it this

of data. If you don't live close to the central office, you have to...
