Jon Udell: Extreme design versus extreme
programming
06/18/2002 08:16 AM
I've just returned from the What's Next conference in Brattleboro, Vermont, where I gave a pair of talks (one on web services, one on application servers). The keynote speaker for the day was Alan Cooper, designer of Visual Basic, author of several books, and founder of a company that specializes in interaction design.

Cooper's view is that the kinds of disasters that have always plagued the industry -- most recently, the catastrophic outcomes of many CRM (customer relationship management) systems -- are a result neither of poor strategy, nor of poor engineering, but of a failure to properly coordinate the two. The missing piece in his view is product planning and design, done according to a methodology that Cooper has devised and that his company practices. This methodology aligns itself with Colonel John Boyd's OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) loop, fashionable in military circles.

This new version improves the speed and efficiency of designers in a variety of workflows from text-intensive book, magazine, and newspaper production to high-end XML-based cross-media workflows. Designers can increase productivity and create more consistent designs by saving graphic, text, and frame-level attributes as Object Styles, which are easy to apply and globally update. Exporting objects with the new InDesign snippets features enables users to easily share or repurpose live InDesign content and layouts from part of a page.

Pfeiffer says QuarkXPress Lags Behind
InDesign CS
02/01/2005 10:05 PM
Pfeiffer Consulting has conducted an "independent, high-level technology analysis of Adobe InDesign CS and QuarkXPress 6.x, in order to allow decision makers in the publishing industry to evaluate the comparative strengths of both applications." IT-Enquirer has interpreted that study (saving us 295 Euros if we are willing to trust their summary) in this article and has come to the conclusion: "Stay Away from QuarkXPress 6.5...Pfeiffer found frequent and reproducible crashes, and serious reproducible dysfunctions of existing product functionality. The problems were so severe that a system's data integrity was in peril. Pfeiffer therefore warns against deploying version 6.5 without checking if Quark has solved the problems found by Pfeiffer."

I think the folks in the QuarkXPress Commiseration Area of our Forums could have saved both organizations a bit of time and money as they have all experienced these issues first hand...these issues and many others.

Macworld review: Adobe InDesign CS

Macworld review: Adobe InDesign CS 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
InDesign CS is a subtle yet very powerful update to Adobe's publishing flagship. The previous version, InDesign 2.0, introduced most of the key features that made the young program a publishing powerhouse: the word-processor–like table editor, the Photoshop-level transparency features, and highly sophisticated typographic control. This version brings enhancements to many of these features, and it has several sensational new ones, such as nested styles and a much more efficient console for accessing text and object attributes. Although InDesign's interface is still somewhat complex, this is a more capable and more functional InDesign; in due time, this program will easily claim the publishing crown.

A Computer Business Review Online story posted today quotes Quark's UK marketing director Gavin Drake as saying, "There is no question that a small number of customers have or are switching to InDesign for various reasons and we wish them every success in this. However you have to put this in context, which is that this represents a very small percentage of the UK market and is certainly not a trend."

I say when BBC Magazines is one of those small numbers along with Hearst Publishing in the US, it may not be a trend, but it's sure heading in that direction.
