Dude, where's my drone?
Dude, where's my drone?
05/06/2004 04:12 PMDefensetech's Noah Shachtman says:
Fisherman and divers of Norway: If you happen
to see a ten-foot long, robotic mini-submarine swimming off of your
shores, please call the U.S.
Navy. The service has been trying to find its mine-sweeping drone for
a week, now, after the 'bot failed to return to its mother ship, the
USS Swift.
The Swift has broken off its participation in a military exercise to
look for the Battlespace Preparation Autonomous Underwater Vehicle,
the AP reports.
"The ship has searched everywhere from the fjord leading into the
southern town Kristiansand to deep ocean water some 30 kilometres out,
where the waters can be as much as 580 metres deep," the wire service
says. "Because the sub could surface just about anywhere along
Norway's coast, [Norwegian military spokesman Cmdr. Thom] Knustad
appealed on national radio for Norwegians to be on the lookout for the
torpedo-shaped, yellowish-orange device with a propeller on one end.

Whirl-A-Drone

Our buddy Noah at DefenseTech points out a new unmanned
flying drone that is sure to be darkening the skies over all the most
fashionable warzones of 2014, this time using the power of
whirling. Looking somewhat like a rotor that's lost its
helicopter, the "Whirl-A-Drone" (just Whirl to its friends) is a
twenty-foot automaton that will be able - assuming the upcoming open
air flight tests give the Pentagon reason to fund more development -
to hover in place for up to four days at a time.
Of course, even without on-board weapons, the Whirl-A-Drone should
be a pretty decent threat deterrent in and of itself. Nobody wants a
20-foot spinning blade to come threshing out of the sky to greet them.
It's lawnmower diplomacy!

Wasp MAV: Seven-Ounce Drone
Wasp MAV: Seven-Ounce Drone

Smaller than the death-dealing, missle-launching UAV
(Unmanned Aerial Vehice) drones is the MAV—the Micro Air
Vehicle. This particular model, called the Wasp, is currently being
tested with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group and weighs just seven
ounces. It can be controlled from the ground (via a taut string and an
11-year-old) or can wirelessly follow a pre-plotted path using GPS
coordinates, snapping pictures from forward and aft cameras. It's not
unlike the ship-orbiting 'options' from Gradius, except they
can't deflect as much laser fire.

Drone IRC Bot is an IRC bot with a modular API to
easily extend and customize the active feature
set. It sports a modern Web administration interface to handle all
common tasks, and a public logging section with an advanced Web
search. It also provides a remote IRC messaging REST API to allow easy
integration with notification services. Installation is done by simply
dropping a war in your servlet container or by running it straight
from the standalone distribution.
Changes:
The highlights of this release are cleaner URLs in the public
logging section and bugfixes related to correct handling of
unknown encoding characters.
Special Forces SnowGoose Drone
Special Forces SnowGoose Drone

I think you can share my dissapointment in
realizing that the Marines have not, in fact, developed a parachuting
blue whale as a final measure in the War On Krill. Sadly, it's not a
whale at all, but instead a SnowGoose, an unmanned cargo drone capable
of transporting up to 600 pounds of cargo in up to six separate bays.
And since it is propeller-driven and not just passive, the SnowGoose
can climb to over 18,000 feet and can steer itself autonomously.

Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone
Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone
08/03/2004 10:50 AM
All DefenseTech has to do to get my
attention is say "SR-71" and I'm turgid with anticipation, so when
they passed along information that the Air Force is developing a
top-secret (not anymore, suckers!) super-stealthy UAV (unmanned aerial
vehicle) that will act as a sort of robotic update to the Blackbird, I
was, suffice it to say, like whoa. Apparently, since slipping
deadlines have caused the next generation of spy satellites to be
delayed, Air Force commanders are rushing to develop an unmanned plane
that can not only travel at high speeds to high altitudes for long
distance reconnaissance, but can also deploy weapons ranging from
"high-precision munitions to devices that can emit pulses of
electromagnetic energy to wreak havoc on everything from power grids
to electronic equipment."
Although there don't appear to be pictures of the new death bird
flying yet, sources indicate the new system is based on research done
on the Tier II (which became the Global Hawk UAV) and Lockheed's
Darkstar [pictured].
I love me some flying death robots, I do.

The call to meet
the challenge of the relentless Defenseless Baby Scourge is addressed
once again as Northrop Grumman joins Boeing in unveiling a new
automated flying drone. The X-47B robotic fighter jet was presented in
full-scale mockup this week, but won't be ready to fly the friendly
skies until sometime in 2006 (no matter what the photoshopped picture
might imply). That means for now flesh-and-blood pilots will still
have to risk loss of life to bomb back the laconic hordes of adorably
drooling infants that currently terrorize the world's most dangerous
orphanages.
