Star Trek Got it Right on Computers

Star Trek Got it Right on Computers

Star Trek Got it Right on Computers 06/18/2004 02:22 PM

Star Trek may be overly optimistic on FTL drive for starships and matter transmission but, according to a new Minneapolis Star Tribune article by Isaac Cheifetz, it was right on target with computer technology. Even 350 years in the future of ST:TNG, computers barely manage to answer well-phrased questions posed by humans, they never ask the questions. The artificially intelligent android, Mr. Data, is one-of-a-kind and not understood by Star Fleet AI experts. Even Data's creator didn't fully understand AI - Data's "brother", Lor, turned out as a psychopathic killer robot. On the other hand, computer databases connect to each other seamlessly "both at the technical level, and semantically", allow computer users to instantly download data from computers found on alien starships or left behind by ancient civilizations.

Star Trek Communicator: Patented

Star Trek Communicator: Patented 07/07/2004 06:04 PM
Xybernaut, the grandfather of well-hyped "wearable computing" that perpetually seems to have problems actually selling products has now announced two wearable computing patents, both of which seem pretty questionable. The first is for an "ergonomic display," which apparently is a display unit that includes rubber handgrips with "tactile ridges." The second, though, is for a "personal communicator" system, that "combines the functionality of a cell phone (or mobile phone), a body supported computer and a pager." Star Trek may want to claim prior art, but Xybernaut claims this is a bit different from previous wearable patents in that this version includes "detachable" parts. Who knew that by making something detachable, it was suddenly patentable? Maybe King Missile should claim prior art...

High court gives science fiction society its seal of approval: The Baltimore Science Fiction Society got a court to award them tax-exempt status because their work is considered educational.

The Court of Appeals took account of the society's annual young writer's competition. In addition, the society holds writing workshops, has a library for its members and runs an annual convention where science fiction novelists and scientists discuss their work. Judge Alan Wilner, writing for the majority, wrote that those initiatives serve an educational purpose, making the society eligible for the tax exemption.

Star Trek pledge of allegiance gets kid

Star Trek pledge of allegiance gets kid
suspended
06/22/2005 01:50 AM
Cory Doctorow: A young Star Trek fan was suspended from school for reciting his own version of the Pledge of Allegiance, in which he pledged to the United Federation of Planets. His mom has posted the hilarious story:
"So, anyway. What did he do?" I picked at the hem of my sweatshirt, looked just to the right of her face. I couldn't meet her eyes. I felt nervous. I felt underdressed. I wondered where 8 was.

So she told me what he did. And as she told me, I started to laugh. I didn't laugh a little, either, but I belly-laughed and grabbed my stomach. My son stood with his class this morning, put small right hand over heart, faced the American flag, and recited his own personal pledge of allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Federation of Planets, and to the galaxy for which it stands, one universe, under everybody, with liberty and justice for all species.

"Mrs. Jaworski. This isn't humorous. The Pledge is an extremely important and patriotic moment each morning in the classroom. I am ashamed of your son's behavior, and I hope you are, too."

Diana Schaub is against cloning in part because of what she's learned watching Star Trek, which is, basically, that death is a part of the great circle of life: The show has "left me receptive to the view that mortality is, if not precisely a good thing, then at least the necessary foundation of other very good things," she wrote in an article last year. "There is something misguided about the attempt to overcome mortality." ..."Both Lincoln and the Enterprise argue that there ought to be certain moral limits to the scientific project, and they help us articulate what those...
