Builders in a Strange Land

Builders in a Strange Land

Builders in a Strange Land 06/18/2004 04:58 AM

The first settlers on Mars probably won't be dragging building materials to their new home, so people are planning to make buildings from what's already on the surface. By Mark Baard.

Despite lots of second-guessing, there is no consensus that the CLR is inherently unfriendly to dynamic languages. The JVM didn't bend over backwards for such languages either, and yet Jython is a great success thanks to the heroic efforts of its inventor, Jim Hugunin. Now Hugunin has turned his attention to .NET, and reports promising results with a prototype Python implementation for .NET called IronPython.

Such projects always seem to spring from an inspired individual or small team. In fact, Microsoft has such a team. It created JScript.NET, the most dynamic of Microsoft's .NET languages. But JScript.NET is the unloved stepsister of C# and VB.NET.

Dynamic languages are rooted in a culture that is simply not indigenous to Redmond. That may change, but for the time being, the future of dynamic languages in .NET lies with non-Microsoft innovators. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
The day this story posted, Larry O'Brien pointed me to Jim Waldo's essay, To type or not to type, which says in part:

When we argue over whether or not a programming language should have types, we are not discussing a matter of fact. Instead, we are participating in what [linguistic philosopher John L.] Austin would call confessional language; what we are really doing is saying something about ourselves. ...

EFF suing on JibJab's behalf for "This
Land is Your Land" parody

EFF has taken things one step further with JibJab and their endangered political parody of This Land is Your Land (Woody Guthrie's copyright holder has threatened to sue them for their work).

We're bringing the fight to Guthrie's rightsholders, and suing on JibJab's behalf, "to defend JibJab's fair use and free speech rights."

Check out Donna's excellent and heavily linked post for more. Link

I'm proud to relate that EFF is representing Jib Jab, the creators of the wonderful "This Land is Your Land" Flash parody that aroused the ire of the holder of Woody Guthrie's copyrights and resulted in a threatened lawuit. Here's a little bit of my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann's letter to the copyright-holder's lawyers.
In your July 23 letter, you contend that "This Land" offers no "satirical comment" on the Guthrie original. You are mistaken.

While your view of Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" as being predominantly about "the beauty of the American landscape" and "the disenfranchisement of the underclass" is interesting, most Americans think of the song as an iconic expression of the ideal of national unity. Jib Jab's parody addresses, among other things, the lack of national unity that characterizes our current political climate (ending with the optimistic hope that unity might be rediscovered). In short, "This Land" explores exactly the same themes as the Guthrie original, using the parodic device of contrast and juxtaposition to comment on the original. See Abilene Music v. Sony Music Entertainment, 320 F .Supp.2d 84, 90-91 (S.D.N.Y. 2003) (emphasizing the role of contrast and juxtaposition as parodic devices). The parodic comment takes on an additional dimension of irony when viewed in light of the often omitted closing stanzas of Guthrie's original.

O'Reilly Network interviews Jason Fried of 37signals: “We built Basecamp because we needed it. I’m a big believer in investing in what you know and what you need. We invested our time, energy, and focus into building a product that we knew we needed to run our own business. When you build what you know, and when you use what you build, you’ve got a head start on delivering a breakout product.”

Strange names are okay

Strange names are okay 05/01/2004 03:23 AM

I got an email from a friend asking if "RSS" is really the best name for the activity of creating and reading XML-based news feeds. I think it is, because if there was only going to be one name for the activity, RSS would have to be it. I can prove it. Suppose you call it XYZ and convince some people to call it that. Then some people will call it RSS and other people will call it XYZ. Unless you can convince everyone to change, which is a very hard thing to do, you're going to have two names for one thing, which is more than twice as confusing as one name.

An example. I use a GSM phone in Europe. I even met the people who designed it. I have absolutely no idea what it stands for and I don't need or want to know.

Another example. In Germany the high speed trains are called ICE. When I got on my first train, the American than I am, I called it an ice-train. The conductor explained that it's an acronym. I-C-E. What does it stand for? Inter City Express. This in a country where the first and only language is German. An English acronym is the name of their high speed rail system, one that they are justifiably proud of.

All around us are things which have incomprehensible names. Eventually that fades into the background and they become new words in our common vocabulary, familiar and happy. Like TV. What is that short for? Tele Vision. What the hell does that mean?

One more. Read the title of this section. Okay. Now think about that for a minute. It's a fairly universal cross-language word for "got it." We all say okay all the time. It's an acronym, right? What is it an acronym for? I bet you'll be surprised.
