KDDI Announces W21CAII For Some Reason

KDDI Announces W21CAII For Some Reason 04/08/2005 10:39 AM

w21caii.jpg imageKDDI presents the "W21CAII," an update to the "W21CA." What was updated? I'm having a hard time finding out — the press release makes a big deal out of this "PC Site Viewer," a version of Opera for viewing normal web sites on mobile phones, but the W21CA already had that. The camera and screen don't seem to be improved either. It's not the "Chaku Uta Full" (an AAC ringer format with iTunes-like purchases from the phone itself) support, and it's not the stereo speakers. Well, it appears to be just the body colors (they've added Sky Blue and Luminous White) and some slight design changes. Nice one, KDDI.

GIzmodo Japan: AU by KDDI Sweets

GIzmodo Japan: AU by KDDI Sweets 03/29/2005 01:56 PM

sweets_1.jpgI've gone on and on about the great work that KDDI's AU is doing in the design department (see the AU Design Project), but you know, they've also become quite good at going after certain key demographics, and it's not hard to see what they're trying to do with their new Sweets line, featuring their patented "friendly design." Going head-to-head with Docomo's Lechiffon, the Sweets phones come in 3 appropriately named colors: Cassis Mousse (pink), Vanilla Beans (white), and Mango Pudding (orange). You can also adorn them with an assortment of case coverings. Kawaii!!!

KDDI Launches "EZ Book Land"

KDDI Launches "EZ Book Land" 04/19/2005 11:03 AM

ez_book.jpg imageau is all set to launch their "EZ Book Land!" e-book service in Japan, hoping to breathe new life into the dying market. I seem to recall e-books failing on pretty much all fronts, but given most of us have our mobile phones close at any given moment, this may prove to be a better destination for the contents. au is throwing a wacky business model at the service, where they hope downloading e-books will lead to purchases of the same books on their online store. But you can get comics, leading me to believe this service will be far more successful than previous e-book services in Japan.

Carlyle Group To Buy Part Of KDDI

Carlyle Group To Buy Part Of KDDI 06/22/2004 04:34 AM
Japanese mobile carrier KDDI has been trying to sell their DDI Pocket division for many months (leading to the inevitable joke/question of whether or not KDDI minus DDI will be simply known as "K"?). DDI Pocket offers the personal handyphone system, which is popular in Japan. It's sort of a cheap approximation of a mobile phone system, but has found new life in supplying wireless data access to Japanese users. The expected buyer from the beginning of all this talk has always been Kyocera, who already owned a small piece of DDI pocket. Despite denials, it looks like Kyocera is buying up DDI pocket, but they've brought in quite the powerhouse partner - which will actually make them the smaller player in the deal. The Carlyle Group has announced that they'll b e teaming up with Kyocera to buy DDI Pocket. The Carlyle Group, of course, is known for hiring up big shot political insiders and other world leaders (such as Lou Gerstner) so they certainly have a few connections up their sleeves. They'll now own 60% of the firm and apparently are looking to bring the technology to developing countries that might not have the infrastructure for a full mobile phone system, but could find the PHS system useful. KDDI, in the meantime, will focus on their real mobile phone market in Japan, which was starting to eat into the DDI Pocket market anyway. It's an interesting look at how a technology that is becoming obsolete in an advanced society could present huge opportunities for developing nations instead. As the second link above shows, this also shows how Japanese firms are increasingly open to being bought by foreign firms -- something that's been rare in the past (though, Ripplewood's buyout of J-Phone's landline business in Japan suggests a trend).

Gizmodo Japan: KDDI AI-MATE

Gizmodo Japan: KDDI AI-MATE 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

kddi_pda.jpgOne of the featured devices in the KDDI Designing Studio's prototype area (the 3rd floor's Creation Studio) is the AI-MATE. They're calling it a hybrid communicator, something that integrates a mobile phone with PDA features in a PDA-like form factor -- it's about the size of a typical Palm Pilot. Although it will be making an appearance at the upcoming Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, this is probably the first chance you'll get to play around with one them. Oh, and getting the demonstration girls to help you figure out how to use them is a definite bonus.

More pictures after the jump, including a snap of the elusive Japanese shadow elf.

'It was you and me together skipping in a field. Und then this great serpent appeared and slithered into a cave.'

'Du lieber gott! Do you know what you are saying to me? Do you know what zis serpent means?'

'Ja, it is some manifestation of the World-Spirit.'
