Imagefilter batch processes image
sequences
06/18/2004 03:24 AM

Developer Belle Nuit Montage has released Imagefilter, an application that batch processes sequences of images. You can use it to build process trees and add branches that import images, apply color correction to them, lay filters over them, add effects and more. You can import images from QuickTime movies, PDFs, or many of the most popular formats as well as import text files that can be merged with your graphics. Imagefilter defines its projects as XML files, allowing them to be automated for production purposes. You can download a demo, limited to 512 x 384-pixel output, from the Belle Nuit Montage Web site. Licenses are US$120 each, or $600 for a site, and system requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and a G4 or G5 processor.

Transterm : RNA Sequences and their Associated Motifs
http://uther.otago.ac.n z/transterm.html

Transterm is a database that facilitates studies of translation and the ranslational control of protein synthesis. It contains a curated collection of elements in mRNAs that control translation, and biologically relevant mRNA regions extracted from GenBank and RefSeq. It is organised largely on a taxonomic basis with files and summaries for each species. Global patterns that may affect translation in particular species, for example bias in the context of initiation codons (Kozak's consensus or Shine-Dalgarno sequences) or termination codons, can be detected in the consensus and information content bias summaries." The site requires Java to run. Output is in ASCII column-formatted reports; Help texts provide explanations of column-heading abbreviations.

Users may use the pull-down menu to browse lists of species / genomes available. Database options include Genbank, RefSeq, and UTR-DB. Genbank and RefSeq searches can be narrowed (by Divisions or Categories, respectively). There is pull-down help on how to search initiation- and termination-regions, how to search classes of mRNA motifs (or run a pattern-search against a user-submitted sequence). Some menus allow limiting searches to CDS coding regions or 3' flanking regions or the 3'-UTRs. Each element indexed has an associated biological description with references. Last described in Nucleic Acids Research, 2002, Vol. 30, No. 1 310-311. This has been adderd to Biological Informatics Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Stupid hotspot connection processes

Stupid hotspot connection processes 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
I tried to check my email during a stopover in Frankfurt from the Luftansa lounge.  Good news -- they have a Vodaphone WiFi hotspot.  But there's one problem.  Signing up to connect to the Hotspot requires that you receive a password on your mobile phone via SMS.  My Sprint PCS phone doesn't work in Europe.  Adding insult to injury, none of the landline phones here in the lounge allow outgoing toll-free calls.  So I can't even reach the Vodaphone help line to see if there's another way to log in.

I can understand the convenience of SMS, but why should connecting your laptop to a WiFi hotspot need to involve a text message to your mobile phone?  Doing the security over the Net via SSL seems perfectly acceptable, as it is for virtually all online purchases.  It's as though a catalog retailer told me to go respond to an email in order to accept my credit card over the phone.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until I get to Helsinki to connect (and to upload this post!).
