Reviewing Seattle's 3G Service

Reviewing Seattle's 3G Service 09/25/2004 12:04 PM
Nancy Gohring reviews AT&T Wireless's new UMTS 3G cell data network in Seattle: Our senior editor Nancy Gohring wrote this for The Seattle Times. Nancy notes that AT&T Wireless has their UMTS service in six markets; Verizon Wireless will roll out its EV-DO service in 11 more cities for a total of 14. Nancy tried the Real Networks video news service and gives them high marks; there's an audio-only component that offers NPR, too. That service is $4.95 per month. She notes, however, that much of that content is available for free on the Internet in formats included in the regular mMode subscription, which is $24.99 per month for unlimited use with basic Internet access and certain mobile data services. Nancy also tried a data card that works with the service, although you can connect to the Motorola phone that's one of two options for the network via a cable to use it as a modem. The data card had worse coverage area, for reasons that are inexplicable. As with Nancy's earlier tests of AT&T Wireless's 2.5G GPRS service, the company couldn't explain the performance variations she saw in being able to get online around town....

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Infoworld: Reviewing Open Source CMS

Infoworld: Reviewing Open Source CMS 01/15/2003 11:50 AM
Open-source CMSes (content management systems)—such as PHP-Nuke (www.phpnuke.org), eZ Publish (www.ez.no) and Bricolage (www.bricolage.cc)—provide a compelling third option, one that can be flexible and relatively inexpensive without requiring companies to build their own CMS from the ground up.

Of course, an open-source CMS solution can present its own challenges. As we've seen before with open-source software, the flip side of great flexibility is often challenging complexity. While it's true that open source enables companies to cross off licensing-fee line items from their project budgets, a portion of these savings must be redirected to development expertise, be it outsourced or in-house.

Reviewing the Yahoo 360 launch, after

Reviewing the Yahoo 360 launch, after
the fact
04/02/2005 07:28 AM

Th e launch of Yahoo 360 seems so long ago, but it was just six days. How did it go? This screed nails it. Invite-only, exclusive, two-tier marketing of beta services, a tradition started by Google (as far as anyone knows) don't work. It only worked for Gmail because there was great anticipation, the idea was new (the method of marketing, that is), and you could use Gmail to communicate with people who didn't use Gmail.

Everything about Yahoo 360 is for members only, and in the first few hours of its life in the blogosphere, most people couldn't get in. Now, after it's launched, there's no way to see anything other than a ghost town. Maybe that's all there is, maybe not. But for a service like this, the appearance of being a ghost town is just as bad as actually being one.

All this fuss for a service that most people thought was a poor cousin to Flickr that Yahoo bought just before rolling out 360. It's a disaster epic on the scale of The Towering Inferno or The Poseidon Adventure. They did everything wrong, and worked really hard at it.

A picture named
toweringinferno.gifMoral of the story, big companies don't have mojo, they can't, and it's not fair to make that the issue. They can, however, make the trains run on time, and at that Yahoo does quite well. But they should leave the innovation to small, nimble, motivated devteams with nothing to lose and no corporate hierarchy to please. Hire a business school prof to do a case study for you. It's never worked differently in Silicon Valley, yet this is a lesson Silicon Valley keeps relearning. The next revolution isn't on stage at Esther's or SXSW or even Etech -- those were the last revolutions.

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”.
