Other uses of semantic schemas
Other uses of semantic schemas
09/07/2002 07:49 AMThinking more about the semantic schemas I wrote about last night, I
realized that it has more uses. XLink for example has the same
problems as RDF. For XLinks to work, you have to add XLink specific
syntax to your document. This is far from ideal, which became
painfully clear when the first XHTML 2.0 draft was released without
XLink support. A semantic schema for XHTML 2.0 can declare that the
href attributes generate XLinks.
Another example. A month ago, when I tried to add support for XHTML
2.0 to the various browsers, I found out that there's no way to tell
the browser what the title of the document is. A semantic schema can
declare what the title of a document is. Google needs to know what the
title of an xml document is too.

Microsoft Patents XML Schemas
Microsoft Patents XML Schemas
02/13/2004 09:25 AM In response to my post about a Microsoft presentation at Emerging
Tech, Bob "Professor" Morris points us to a Microsoft page that
explains something important about its XML schema for Word, Excel,
etc.: Microsoft may have patents and/or patent applications that are
necessary for you to license in order to make, sell, or distribute
software programs that read or write files that comply with the
Microsoft specifications for the Office Schemas. So, Microsoft's
patents prevent me from writing a program that reads a Word XML file?
Wow, that's harsh. And besides, isn't "schema" already a plural?...

task pane with context-sensitive controls that sense and react to
navigation within the document.

Microsoft Continues Commitment to Open
and Royalty-Free XML Schemas
04/15/2004 11:48 AMMicrosoft Corp. today announced the addition of the XML schema used by
Microsoft® Office Visio® 2003, DataDiagramML, to the Microsoft Open
and Royalty-Free Office 2003 XML reference schema program announced in
November 2003. Through the Microsoft documentation and a royalty-free
license, customers and partners can take advantage of the XML schema
in its diagramming and data visualization tool. The availability of
the Visio schema builds on Microsoft's commitment to XML by providing
a complete and W3C-compliant description of the Visio Extensible
Markup Language (XML) file format, enabling organizations to access
information captured in their Visio diagrams and use it with other
XML-enabled applications, such as customer relationship management
(CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, as part of their
business processes. While Microsoft is providing this documentation in
an effort to aid solution providers and in-house developers who want
to create Visio solutions, some early adopters already have begun
developing solutions with Visio 2003, and have touted DataDiagramML's
usefulness in creating data visualization solutions.

XML Reference Schemas
11/17/2003 01:59 PMMicrosoft Corp. today announced the availability of a royalty-free
licensing program for its Microsoft® Office 2003 XML Reference
Schemas and accompanying documentation. The Office 2003 XML Reference
Schemas enable organizations of all sizes to utilize industry-standard
Extensible Markup Language (XML) technology in managing spreadsheet,
word processing and form documents. Microsoft's new Office 2003
versions of Word, Excel and the InfoPath (TM) information-gathering
program utilize schemas that describe how information is stored when
documents are saved as XML. By licensing the schemas royalty-free,
Microsoft builds on its ongoing commitment to promote the development
of XML as the next-generation technology for integrating applications,
services and data sources.
