Pickup Games, Vol. 4 - Kingdom of Loathing

Pickup Games, Vol. 4 - Kingdom of

Pickup Games, Vol. 4 - Kingdom of
Loathing
06/17/2004 07:33 PM

Today's pickup game is a web game— that is, one implemented entirely through HTML and Javascript that's generated by a lot of clever server-side scripting and database manipulation. It's Kingdom of Loathing, a turn-based RPG. The main focus of the game is humor, with send-ups of popular RPG conventions, as well as internet culture. But unlike a lot of other comical games you can play over the internet, the game underneath the humor is actually very full-featured and has a lot of content. A lot of very funny content.

Pickup Games, Vol. 3 - Bookworm 06/16/2004 09:04 PM

Bookworm is my favorite Popcap game, even though I haven't played them all. It's another game that can run long but is easy to walk away from when necessary.

It's a word game with simple rules: just trace a path around the game board to spell a word. Those tiles are then removed and new tiles drop in to take their place. Longer words get you more points. The challenge increases as your score gets higher, as the game will drop burning tiles that will eat their way down to the bottom of the screen and end the game if you don't spell a word with them. If you make a lot of short words, you get more burning tiles. Conversely, spelling longer words will get you green, golden, and crystal tiles that give big bonuses when used. The game also starts picking random words for you to try and spell for an increasing amount of bonus points.

The game is great for a quick distraction or extended play. In the standard mode of the game, there's no time limit for spelling a word, so it's very casual. Best of all, you can play it for free on the web. The $19.95 downloadable version does add some nice features though, including the ability to save and quit, and both an internet and local high score list (which keeps track of both scores and longest words spelled).

Pickup Games, Vol. 1 - Inspector Parker 06/14/2004 10:38 PM

I'll be rounding out each day of my guest stint here with a recommendation of a nice game that you don't necessarily need to make room for in your schedule— one that you can play a round of in just a few minutes.

Today's game sharpens and speeds up your logic neurons. It's called Inspector Parker, it's published by Oberon Games, and it'll definitely wake up a brain put to sleep by too much office work.

Today's pickup game just barely qualifies, as games can take more than a few minutes, but I included it because it's turn-based and easy to get back into in case you do have to stop mid-game. It's Reiner Knizia's Samurai, a computerized version of the popular board game, and it even has an OS X version.

Pickup Games, The Reckoning - Strange
Adventures in Infinite Space

sais.jpg
Well, my week is up, and I've saved as a parting shot the ultimate pickup game: Strange Adventures in Infinite Space, developed by Digital Eel and published by Cheapass Games. Games take just minutes.

There's not as much brain power required as there is in the other games from this week; in fact your score really has more to do with luck than anything else. But despite having probably less strategy involved than a game of Freecell, SAIS feels like it's smarter than it is, because it recalls elements of games with more depth, with its goals of space exploration, combat, trade and collection.

The demo is pretty crippled compared to the full version, but the full version costs only $15. Well, the PC and Mac versions do. There's PocketPC and PalmOS versions too (new Tapwave Zodiac owners take note!), available from Astraware for $19.99.

And with that fifth and final recommendation, I'm done! All five of the games I've mentioned this week are great for spending a few minutes with, but so playable that you'll be able to play for hours. Have fun, Gizmodo!

Fear, but no loathing

Fear, but no loathing 01/08/2004 08:51 PM
A small revelation hit me today. Relaxing after sauna - the place where probably most Finnish ideas (and children) originate - I was exchanging text messages with some dear friends, and somehow it clicked together.

I no longer fear death.

I mean, I would be incredibly pissed off if I died tomorrow, since there's just so many things I haven't done and seen yet - but no, I cannot say that the actual idea of the black wall at the end of my life feels frightening any more. I don't mean that I want to go tomorrow and climb Mt Everest - I'm still scared shitless at the thought of falling into a crevasse, thankyouverymuch :) - or get into other extreme sports, but more of an acceptance of the simple fact that I will, eventually, in two, twenty, perhaps 200 years, kick the bucket and be no more. Perhaps I'll leave children behind, or perhaps I will not. I hope I do, and if I do, I leave good kids. Who knows. But regardless of what I do - the road will come to an end, and I'm okay with that now.

This thought is really very comforting. It means that my relationship to failure is no longer what that used to be either... I don't really fear it either. It is quite okay to make mistakes, too! A gigantic screwup might cost you your life, but if you fear death, you cannot really go all-out when you shoot for something you want. Fear is what keeps us grounded back in reality, and that is a good thing, but it can also hold you down. One must learn to appreciate fear for what it is (stupid people get shot first), but one should not be frightened - if this makes any sense to you :-).

"Make love, not war", it is said. But in some sense, they are the same thing: You cannot fight well, if you fear the battle. Nor can you really love someone, if you are afraid of what might happen. In both there is no middle ground. It belongs only to the cannon fodder.

Do not fear death. Do not fear mistakes. Do not fear shame. Do not fear love. 'cos in the end, it will all be okay, and death will be the final adventure.

Please Direct Your Bile, Loathing, Venom and Displeasure at SBC They've got to be kidding: SBC Communications Inc is enforcing a patent it owns that, it claims, covers the use of frame-like user interfaces in web sites, it emerged this week Kevin Murphy writes. . If your web site uses a frames or a persistent user interface, then you could be in infringement. Using SBC’s interpretation of its patent, hundreds of thousands of web sites, including those of many SBC’s own hosting customers, many of the web’s biggest sites, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office itself, could be in infringement. ... "SBC Intellectual Property currently is working with several commercial web site owners regarding patent licensing agreements related to specific techniques for enabling consistent navigation features from different pages of a web site," SBC said in a statement yesterday. ... It is believed that a small number of sites have so far been contacted, likely in the tens. SBC is asking between $527 and $16.6m per year to license the patented technology, depending on the annual revenue of the company concerned and what kind of license they sign up for. [_Go_] Well if you haven't come up with a reason to remove frames from your site yet then here it is. It does make me wonder about Open Source projects like SquirrelMail and PHPMyAdmin that use frames extensively.

How to Pickup Women Easily

How to Pickup Women Easily 05/21/2004 09:49 PM

Sorry.  I was just wondering why there aren't more posts like this which would be more useful to geeks than waka waka about blogging or poo poo about Bush.  To avoid disappointing you altogether, here is a golden rule I learned when I was single:

Don't ask questions that could be answered with a No.

Until she got to know you well enough to make an informed decision about you, stick with the rule and ask other types of questions.  If she gets that twinkle in her eyes, check your wallet to see if you need to make a run to the drug store.  If she gets that pestered look, walk away happy knowing that she wasn't your type after all.  Delusions can be useful when you are single.  ;-)

If you are a complete loser, stick with the rule until she calls the cop or makes a run for the door.  If you are a persistent bastard, keep at it until she gets a restraining order against you.  If you are a clueless idiot, follow her to Texas and congratulate her for getting a gun license.

If a butterfly in Beijing can destroy Kansas, this post has a good chance of triggering a population explosion.

The Kingdom Of God Is Within You

The Kingdom Of God Is Within You 06/17/2004 10:14 AM
Dear Leo, Dear Mohandas "The longer I live -- especially now when I clearly feel the approach of death -- the more I feel moved to express what I feel more strongly than anything else... the doctrine of the law of love unperverted by sophistries. Love... the highest and indeed the only law of life". The Kingdom of God Is Within You (full text available) is Leo Tolstoy's tractatus of "Christianity Not as a Mystic Religion but as a New Theory of Life", a primer of (among other things) the doctrine of non-violence. Among the many fans of the 1894 book was an impr isoned Hindu barrister, a "half-naked fakir" if you want, a certain Mo handas K. Gandhi who was fascinated by "t he independent thinking, profound morality, and the truthfulness" of the b ook. So he ended up writing fan letters to the great Russian man: who warmly wrote back to his young Indian "friend and brother". The old wise Christian anarchist literary giant and the shy, insecure young man who sparked a revolution: to paraphrase another wise, badly-dressed , pacifist old man, "Generations to come, it may be, will scarcely believe that such men ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom 01/03/2004 07:20 PM

I finally got around to reading Cory Doctorow's novella, "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom." It's quite good, and he's got it posted for free on his Web site (in no less than 17 different formats). You may know Doctorow know from Boing Boing fame.

If you've been to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando, the book will mean more to you because it revolves around the park. It's set in a future where bodies are cloned and if you die, you just restore a clone from backup. Consequently, you lose everything since your last backup. I have to admit that I'll never look at backups quite the same way again.

Another central concept (borrowed from blogrolls, perhaps), is "Whuffie." There is no money in this world, everything is bought by reputation. The more people like you, the more Whuffie you have, the more power you have. When you meet someone new, you "ping their Whuffie," to see if they're worth your time.

The actual plot revolves around The Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom and the "ad hoc" political groups that have formed to manage them like little countries. The group managing the Hall of Presidents has designs on taking over The Haunted Mansion. Intrigue ensues.

It's short — you can put it away in a couple of hours. It's winning some great sci-fi awards as well. Worth checking out.

End of the Animal Kingdom 12/21/2003 01:19 PM

It turns out the wackily ponderous movie made in Pompignan last year (shooting of which complained about here, brief review by Herself of hometown showing here) isn’t going straight to TV after all – we’d heard it was going to show on Arte sometime around now – it’s been rele ased in cinemas.

If you’re near a major French city and possessed of nothing better to do, you can head out see our very own little red-haired kid in his star turn as “little red-headed kid in schoolhouse”, Noël the vigneron as “guy in baseball cap”, the old guy on a bicycle leading his white horse down the main street as he does every day, lots of purdy haute garrigue scenery, and much else besides, in a largely unsatisfying study of longing, sensuality, death and sheep.

It’s not that bad. In many ways it’s like a two-hour love letter to our little village.

The book had been available online under a somewhat restrictive CC in text format for a while but Cory recently loosened the reins and the artistic community seems to be responding.
