"MIT's Technology Review retracted two stories on
reaction by HP rank and file employees to the firing of CEO Carly
Fiorina, both written by a New York freelance journalist named
Michelle Delio. The stories referred to a Hungarian immigrant,
identified only by the initials G.S., who worked at HP's Imaging
System Laboratory for nearly three decades before resigning in disgust
in 2003. G.S. compared Fiorina's leadership with that of the
Communist regime he had fled. The only problem was the employee
apparently didn't exist, as HP officials pointed out to the
embarrassed Tech Review editor." Delio (who also used to write
articles for Wired News) apparently still insists that the guy is real
-- but no one else can find any evidence of him. It's also not clear
if this is a case where Delio made the guy up, or someone tricked
Delio into believing he was real. The original Tech Review article
was a bit strange. When reading it, it seemed that the guy put in
enough information about himself that it would be quite easy to figure
out who he was if you worked at HP Labs. Still, what may be most
interesting is that HP actually did an internal investigation to
figure out who the guy was.

Paging Dan Brown and Nicholas Cage
Paging Dan Brown and Nicholas Cage
01/05/2005 06:31 AMDavid Pescovitz:
Last year, the deeply secretive
Knights
Templar demanded an apology from the Vatican for persecuting the
group in the 14th century. Apparently, the Vatican wasn't entirely
against the idea. That surprising communication from the shadowy sect
also revealed the hometown of its current grand master. The Guardian
went on a quest to Hertfordshire, England to track down the Templars:
If there is something implausible in the idea that huge
stretches of world history have been secretly coordinated from a
market town just north of the M25 - well, maybe that's what they want
you to think. The local newspaper, the Hertfordshire Mercury,
certainly seems convinced: over the past few months it has published
several intriguing stories quoting local Templars, who told its
reporter of a secret network of tunnels under the town that was still
in use by the order. "It reaches beyond well known central Hertford
locations," one Templar said, "including the tourist office, the
castle, Monsoon, Threshers, the post office, Bayley Hall, and the
council offices." Treasures of "immense importance" were hidden there,
it was claimed. Was the quest for the Holy Grail finally about to come
to an end? More surprisingly still, was it about to come to an end
underneath Monsoon on Market Place?
The man who has persuaded the Vatican to consider apologising, Tim
Acheson, meets the Guardian in icy morning fog in Hertford, wearing
smart pinstriped trousers and a thick winter overcoat. His
midnight-blue sports car is parked nearby. "As you might expect," he
says, setting the tone for the day, "there are going to be some things
that I'm not able to discuss."

Commoditization
How Nicholas Carr Misunderstands
Commoditization
05/11/2004 03:16 PMNicholas Carr sure is getting a lot of attention for his book
rehashing last year's argument that "IT Doesn't Matter." Last week we
had
two
different
posts
a> explaining why Mr. Carr's thesis was wrong. Now, Wired Magazine
has let Carr speak for himself, and he does a dreadful job trying
to defend his position. It is definitely true that many people
misunderstood his thesis concerning the commoditization of IT.
However, the industry execs he mentioned in the article
did
understand his thesis and responded with valid points. Carr's problem
is that he thinks that those who are arguing against him don't believe
that commoditization is happening. He's wrong. Everyone knows that
technology is being commoditized. That's the process of technology
advancement and competition. It's how the world works. So, by giving
examples of how the companies that criticize him are commoditizing
products he doesn't help his own argument. The point that he's wrong
on isn't that products become commoditized, but it's when he believes
the world ends with commoditization. Once a product is commoditized
he seems to believe that all power to profit is gone. As we
explaine
d last week, that's not true at all. The
power of
commoditization is that it becomes a cheap input, rather than a final
output. It becomes the building block of more innovation. What the
smart company realizes (and Mr. Carr seems to miss) is that
commoditization drives innovation, rather than kills it. By
completely misunderstanding the arguments that show his thesis is
wrong, Mr. Carr does himself a huge disservice. It would be great to
see him actually debate the points raised against him. Instead, he
just trots out a straw-man argument (that companies are commoditizing
IT products). Everyone agrees with him that this is happening, so
arguing about it is pointless. What he's confused about is that
companies (and individuals) know how to use commoditized technology to
create new opportunities.

News Judgment Old and News Judgment New:
American Nicholas Berg Beheaded. Now
What?
05/16/2004 02:11 AMThe argument surfaced last week: the gatekeepers in Big Media are
mistaken--clueless, biased, disconnected--for filtering out the full
horror of the Berg beheading. They haven't showed the photos or the
video of the act itself. But the full horror is available on the Web,
and hit meters suggest that people are ready to see it. But will they
see it on television? It's possible.
