LucidLink has released a free Wi-Fi client that solves some configuration, security hassles: In an interesting move, wireless security software vendor Interlink has released LucidLink Wireless Client at no cost for all Windows XP and 2000 users. The client software aids in supporting secure configurations by detecting a network's settings--Mac OS X does this built-in--and secures against evil twin and related attacks by not automatically switching to networks named the same but with different attributes. The client incorporates several security elements, meaning it can serve as a single entry point for Wi-Fi network connection, as opposed to Microsoft's broken-up approach.

LucidLink Wireless Client also works with the company's 802.1X-based authentication system that uses their proprietary to set up secure connections over Wi-Fi using software you host in house and with a secure out-of-band confirmation element. The LucidLink system allows anyone with the client installed to request access to the network without requiring that they enter a username and password. The out-of-band confirmation eliminates rogue entry.

Airport Text mimics the flip-over letters and numbers that airports and train stations used to employ for arrival and departure times as well as other information. Developer Wolfram Research has released GUIKit, a free development environment for creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that can be implemented in a wide variety of ways. GUIKit is used with Mathematica -- Wolfram's software that offers high-end number crunching, data analysis and other functions required by those in technical fields -- to create GUIs that can be deployed as stand-alone client applications or as part of Mathematica's functionality. GUIKit requires Mathematica 5.0 or higher and will be included in future releases of the software; in the meantime, it can be downloaded from the Wolfram Web site.

Yahoo Japan launches blog tool 

Yahoo Japan, owned mostly by Softbank and partly by Yahoo, on Tuesday launched a test, or "beta," version of Yahoo Japan Blogs, a free service that lets users post blogs and up to 2GB of images, comment on other blogs, and associate their blogs with animated representations of users known as avatars.

The launch could have implications for Yahoo users in the United States, too. Yahoo's Asian blogging services are striking in that they precede any offerings or previews by Yahoo for its flagship portal. And Yahoo's lateness to the blogging game is all the more notable thanks to significant investment by Yahoo's main portal competitors, including Google, MSN and AOL.
